On Sunday I was able to hit the final day of a sale I had wanted to hit the day before, when it started, but, for $5 that I spent I had an amusing time digging through things
55308603639_c3914549d0_4k.jpg
File handle, Craftsman hex sockets, metric hex socket tool, early Duro ratchet, part of a Snap-on test light, VOM alligator clip leads, blades for a utility knife, Snap-on test driver, Walden Spintite drivers, Brinks and Cotton c-clamp, Williams hook spanner.

Think David Brown and Son. Predecessor to Brown & Sharpe. Nice OLD tool.

Beat me to it, but slightly off... According to Wikipedia, it was Darling, Brown and Sharpe, from 1866-1892.

I wasn't making a statement, I was providing a clue. I was pretty sure about David being the correct first name. But never should my hint be initialized like that.

The Predecessor was the bigger clue. I didn't want to take away @jeffmoss26 fun researching of it. Lugz doesn't like it either, so just a breadcrumb to start

Note I didn't say "I think ..". 😉

Hey, my disclaimer was... "According to Wikipedia!" I'm not trying to be authoritarian, either!

But, "B & S Prov RI" is easy for me, had a grandfather who worked there. The D is a guess...

Showed up late to the party for an estate sale on Sunday, left with a handful of stuff from the bargain bucket then it was off to the nearby flea market where, in another life, I would have hauled off countless neat items I found.

After a lot of dud days in the distant past I wrote the whole market off. I'll admit I misjudged. I had a lot of fun browsing.

I was very tempted by a big ol' ¾" drive socket set. The seller had a very ambitious marketing strategy: make condescending remarks to people you want money from when they attempt to buy something. It did not work on me.

I picked up three nice Proto sockets from a much friendlier man instead. Random encounters are slowly building up a full set.

Recent acquisitions found in beautiful downtown Sequim:

new arrivals 060226.jpg
Wiss 10 inch tin snips
Dawn Industries Inc. "Cutting Tool for Flexible Plastic Conduit" patent 4336652 Jun 29 1982 Duane D. Robertson
Waldes "Truarc" snap-ring pliers
Heinisch 10 inch shears
Millers Falls tap handle
cheapie offshore miniature screwdriver set
three pairs of assorted barbers scissors (Wiss, Zotos Fluid Cut, and G-MON)
I think the total for all this came to $8 bucks

IHC road reflector kit 060226 01.jpg
IHC road reflector kit 060226 02.jpg
International Harvester "Reflector Flare" 3-piece emergency windproof reflector/flag kit in original box with the flags!

and the real find:

Childs Play Tool Set (Poland) 060226 01.jpgChilds Play Tool Set (Poland) 060226 03.jpgChilds Play Tool Set (Poland) 060226 02.jpgChilds Play Tool Set (Poland) 060226 04.jpg
Polish-made Child's Toy Tool Set in folding wooden box.
Only the chisel is marked "POLAND", so it's reasonable to assume this was made for the export market.
The tools were actually used, which kind of surprised me. Some little boy whacked the hell out of that chisel.
I have to wonder what pieces of Mom's furniture fell victim to that saw?
Puzzlingly, the set included three plastic drafting tools - triangle, curve, etc. Marked Handy Andy, which was the trade name for the Skilcraft Corporation for their "Handy Andy" like of children's tools.
My screenshots from the 1961 catalog are awfully fuzzy, but it looks like I found a match.

I received a Handy Andy tool kit for Christmas as a kid. I still have it in a closet upstairs

Picked this up after work on my way home, then promptly drove 4 hours North to attend a family funeral today, and just made the round trip back home to be at work tomorrow. I had just enough time to get this out of the truck and into the garage:

Long time since I've posted, as I am mostly out of the acquisition phase of building my hoard and now am trying to get rid of stuff. Okay, thinking about trying to get rid of stuff.

However, my kids and I were given a chance to pick my late father-in-law's shop in PA, so I drove the 12-mpg F-250 out from Boston to load up. Technically, all of it was free, but cost me $200+ in gas for the round trip.

"Papa" John was a general contractor for most of his career, but primarily a woodworker late in life. He specialized in building stuff from reclaimed wood. His shop was mostly devoid a good tools, all claimed by geographically closer relatives. Much of what was left was covered in bird ****, since he hadn't been out into the shop in years and the critters moved in.

Nevertheless, I loaded up a few things from Papa's stash for which I will find uses.

1000013025.jpg

Pair of 8-ft 2x4s
Half box of 5/8" plywood connectors
3/4 box of Simpson 2x10 joist hangers and assorted other brackets
2400 2-1/4" ring-shank nails
2000 3" full had smooth shank nails
Arrowhead staple gun
3x Craftsman DOE wrenches
Stanley #151 spoke shave
18" metal ruler
MeasureMaster MM12 Mark II rolatape
Pair of 14" Jorgensen-style wood clamps, made by the Cincinnati Tool Co
Partial boxes of wood and metal screws, nuts and aluminum rivers
3x forged eye nuts for these rods
Assorted drywall tools
Pair of Ladder Jax
A handbasket for the ride to, well, you know...

1000013024.jpg

7x 14"x11" oak stair tread cutoffs
2x 5'x1-3/8" round dowels
14x 8' reclaimed pine boards, as wide as 13"

The boards were loaded partially to help justify having brought the truck, but also to collect material for a future project that would pay homage to Papa John, the woodworker!

Sorry to hear about the funeral, but I found one of those Caddy's a few years back. It makes a great shop trolly, and the vintage JDM guys and Aircooled VW guys are into them.

I have always wanted to find one of these trolleys. Usually you see the Hazet version.

“Puzzlingly”? …because design and execution are separate disciplines?
No.
Because I was halfway through typing that post and then thought
"Hey, I should really look at those Skilcraft catalog pages first."
I didn't realize it was a "Handy Andy" kit until I'd gotten to the last line in that post, which is when I dug up the catalog pages.
Initially I thought it was just some generic "kids toy set" that a previous owner and put the "Handy Andy" stuff into.
Haven't been on my game the last several days, obviously.

Well, it’s a nice kit. I sometimes see empty steel boxes. And I think I had a similar kit as a child, eventually breaking or losing all the components. Unusual to find so much still together!

Well, it’s a nice kit. I sometimes see empty steel boxes.
I looked at every "Handy Andy" and "Skilcraft" listing on ebay yesterday. The majority of the items listed were empty boxes, most of which were steel. The few sets listed in wood boxes (like this one) were shy pieces as well.
ONE wood box set listed on ebay still contained most of the pieces, but I'm not going to blow $46 to make a "complete" set.
I found the inclusion of a gimlet a rather odd choice for a child's tool set, but what do I know?

I played with my father’s childhood toolish toys, and am just old enough to have had new toys made of steel with points and sharp edges. Among my younger family members, I witnessed the progression from wood&steel to hard plastic to soft plastic to foam.

Haven't run into any foam yet. This "Schylling Little Helper" set was a recent acquisition - purchased maybe 18 months ago.
I didn't experience "kid toys" in my youth. My grandfather took me down into the basement when I was four and showed me how to use the vise and a coping saw - I spent hours and hours cutting old apple crates up into little pieces.

We still have my son's knock odd handy Handy Andy set, in a wood box. hanging in the "art room". He was ready to let it so about when he moved out - I insisted we keep it. (certainly mine is long gone) All steel tipped tools and yes, even has the gimlet. I believe gifted to him about 35 years old at his third B-day party, (along with the small wood workers bench I made him. Around 35 years back so still available new as recently as that. All original except for the hammer which he did manage to break the head. I may have a better replacement by now?

Toy Tool box.jpg

Yep, made in Poland.

This was his "Watch Norm Abrams New Yankee Workshop" phase where he would watch Norm as many hours as we would let him. And No, no furniture was destroyed by him with his tools.

Went out Thursday to a church rummage, then on the way home decided to swing through 3 different towns that had their main days listed as Friday and Saturday, So sort of a TOO situation.

A baby Channellock & a B & C at a buck each.

IMG_2459.JPG
Priced at $8.00
Craftsman 1/2 breaker sockets & a RHFT, and a Plomb 1/2 in well used shape. #5467

IMG_2460.JPG

For $5. a pretty nice 3/8 SK Set.
IMG_2461.JPG

From what I presumed was a "pro seller" set up on the town's main drag, all priced at $2.
Craftsman 3/8 breaker, SK 3/8 rat.
First I have run into these Snap-on baby breakers: 1/2" SV10A and 3/8" RV10B
The 9/16 universal they tossed in for free.

IMG_2462.JPG

Score of the day, these 60lb York Dumbbells at $20.00 the pair.
Seller talked a while how he had made these while working at the foundry in Columbia PA.
Looks like they never got the black finish, almost looks like just a primer that gave way to rust in his basement.
Don't mind saying, these are a little hard for me to toss around.

Several big neighborhood sales in York and Lancaster counties this weekend.
Will be getting out early & irritating people as they try to set up.....

I won just one item that I bid on at this week's local online auction, and I thought I did okay. A nice Kennedy machinist's chest with good felt and just a little rust on one corner of the bottom. It had a variety of tools and odds and ends inside, including a drill bit set missing maybe a dozen bits, but the ones in the set all seem to be good quality made in the USA. Some screwdrivers, tin snips, chuck keys, some 6 inch rules, and a Dunlap saw filing guide, and the little unmarked red vise. The hidden gem that didn't show in any photos was an early Stanley 110 "shoe buckle" block plane in not-too-bad condition. It has a ding in one corner and is dirty and rusty, and missing the wooden knob, but the "shoe buckle" is intact.
And I got change back from my $70 bill.

Rare Mid week sales for me - an estate sale then a TOO GS on the way home.

I had high hopes for the Estate sale, but got there on the second day and missed a couple items which included another aluminum cooler box similar to a couple weeks back... also missed a hand crank swing machine. I was told the cooler sold for like $20...

Anyway the Ice cream freezer was my other target as well as the cooling rack that happens to be the same size as is used in the Colman oven's bur does not have the bent tabs to slot into the side walls, but I have already sorted out using a couple of metal skewers for that so it still can work without mods. $15 all

E1-Acme-Ice-Cream-Freezer-Rack.jpg

I believe the maker is Acme? ( I see part of the M adn the E there...) still researching, and its either 1 or 2 Qt, I've thinking one. I have a fair amount of restore on this as the cream bucket is quite rusted from the salty ice water melt, but it is operational. seem to have had those parts painted dark forest green

E2-Acme-Ice-Cream-Freezer.jpg

The TOO had both freebees and purchase tables and I got an old Armin Trosser Coffee Grinder - likely pre-WWII; and the leather tie on pouch which is collapsed, but opens to 3 inches or so - $2 all Grinder insides are very clean; I need to work on the outside. Looks like tobacco tar to me, and initial wipe seems to confirm.

T1-coffee-grinder-Armin-Trosser-leather-pouch.jpg

And some free embroidery/sewing stuff for my ladies. The pillow cover is 16 X 16.
Also a painters brush needing a cleaning so it soaking in Simple Green.

I can only help if you admit that they are 850-7, not 950-7. IMG_0684.jpeg
As for the adjustable… you’re looking for the patent?
Maybe this.

^ I THOUGHT "850" when I first got them home. They are rusted pretty badly. I brushed that part off with a little brass brush and I believe I'm seeing 950-7. I'll try to get a clear photo in the morning.

On the Crescent adjustable - I was just wondering if I had something special. If the patent was issued in 1915, does that equate to these being made prior to .... 1932? They are rusted solid.

In our town it's a woman. Everyone knows her, talks about her. The veterans refuse to let her in til opening time. Purplish Dodge truck, poorly parked, often blocking the street. A real piece of work.

I have several of them (all feral, lowballing, resellers too) . Seen one get kicked put out an estate sale several times.

There was a family run estate sale less than 2 miles from me on Thursday June 4th. Pictures showed a lot of tools. Got there a few minutes early and started digging in. They had small paper bags you could fill with unmarked tools for $12 each. I spent 2 hours sorting through several tool boxes , lots of Craftsman and several other US brands. I like the CB radio small trash can! 8 bags and the can cost me $100 even, a quick count showed about 290 items for an average of about 35 cents per item. Favorites are the Craftsman Professional metric wrenches, the Craftsman RHFT ratchet and the always hard to find Craftsman 18mm combo wrench! I spent 3 hours cleaning and sorting out these tools, the white beach towel is all Sears, the blue towel is everything else.

Local GS this morning. Picked up a few items after digging through a tote of tools. Found a SO 3/8 F71G, and a 1/2 Craftsman ratchet without model # =v=. A Craftsman push drill with bits. Also an assortment of pliers, I wire wheeled them when I got home to see if I could locate maker marks. Needle nose is Japanese. Cutters are channelock. Crimper is Ideal. Lineman marks are gone. Lastly, snap ring is blue point. The pliers need a good cleaning. $25 for the lot. IMG_7250.jpeg

My local guy who does monthly sales and gets a pretty good selection had a Kennedy kits 620 3 drawer toolbox tagged for $5 in great shape, so I couldn't resist and is now mine lol. a couple of spots of skin cancer which I abraded away. I barely had to do anything to it! Compared to some of the relics that have followed me home this one was a breeze.
