is there any reason why one of these couldn’t be mounted and used as truck tool box? I haven’t been able to find any pictures of anyone whose tried to see how it might look. What do y’all think?

I had a 48" Ridgid in my 3/4 ton at one time, when I removed the bed to change the fuel pump I installed studs to bolt the two front legs down and I used thin taped on weatherstrip to seal it. I had the truck for 14 years box was in there for 5.

I have had a Knack box 28hx24dx60L in my pickups for 30 years. This is my 3rd one. First one was stolen - along with a brand new K2500 hd GMC. They recovered the pickup (totaled) but the Knack, full of tools was never found.
I bought another pickup and new Knack.
It lasted for ~15 years and 2 pickups before it rusted out.
This one is about 15 years old.
I painted it once but it needs it
again
I always cut off the center feet in the middle. Lets you slide four 8' sheets of drywall under it and still close the tail gate - if you clean out under it...
I have Never had leakage or wet inside except, when they rust they rust out from the bottom.
I like the 28 h. Can still see out the rear view mirror.

All of our 8 and 9 foot utility beds have 4 foot wide gangboxes in them about a foot away from the front of the bed so we can store a spare tire. Usually when you buy a cab and chassis and add a utility bed there is an automatic spare tire and jack delete. The factory has no idea what kind of bed you will be adding. The great thing about Ram C&C is they have a 52 gal tank.

"top" boxes (like the one OP pictured) I don't know if I've ever seen one mounted in the bed of a truck. I'd love to have the larger box in my truck but didn't get one because my thinking is that lids are typically not stepped and part of the lid lip faces forward.

The "chest" style ones (standard job box) you do see all the time. had a Ridgid one for maybe a decade and upgraded to a larger Knaack nearly that long ago again Zero water issues. Its a 4830 so my back window is useless but at 48" wide I can easily stack longer material like EMT on one side of the cab and a 6' ladder on the other side.

Here is an older picture of the dividers I made for mine. All friction fit with nesting dados. missing from the picture are 2 full length sliding trays (one on top of the other that can slide past each other), false bottom for material I need but hardly ever use and nesting material trays.

My old Knaack box was needing some paint and patching again.
So when I saw this one at an auction recently I got my wallet out.
I cut the feet off of this one so I can see out the back window better.
I love these boxes.

How did that box work out for you?

Ive been thinking about adding something like that to my Flat Bed Trailer - for straps, wood blocks and a jack tire iron etc etc

I used a Knaack for years in my F250. never had problems with water. It did get broken into when the truck was stolen, they managed to drill out the lock. Fortunately at the time I had almost nothing in the tool box, they took the radio and my torque wrench and breaker bar from the doors, and the police found the truck the next day. The thieves didn't even empty the 1/2 tank of diesel that was probably worth more than whatever they got out of the tool box. :ROFLMAO:

Keep in mind that if you mount a box on the trailer tongue it will reduce how sharply you can jacknife the trailer. So a short, narrow, tall box will be better. It you mount it on the bed you can mount a much larger box but then you lose bed space. So plan it all out carefully.

When ordered my trailer I had then install a 5ft tongue, so I have a little extra Jack knife space
but
I still need to be careful how wide I go

a 42 inch wide would be Great ! But the 42 inch box is smaller all around than what I want

Draw back may be if you have ladder rack with ladders. I usually drove a one ton service van ,fully loaded. I had to used pickup as a spare for a couple weeks and put two gang boxs in the bed and had ladder racks. It was a kuv pickup bed, so my hand tools where in the sides but It sucked getting in those boxes with that rack.
