The PTO clutch on my simplicity prestige has died. An Amazon one is half the price of a dealership one. Is the dealership one worth the extra money or will the cheap one be just fine?

Just a data point. Last year the PTO clutch bearings died on my 2007 LT-46 Cub Cadet (Pre-MTD ownership.) The MTD OEM replacement was VERY expensive, and the mower likely only has a couple of years of life remaining (getting tired of welding and replacing parts every year to keep it going.) Amazon had a ton of VERY cheap replacements, but they all looked like junk. The HiTorque PTO clutch on Amazon impressed me as being even better than the OEM for a quarter of the price. I took a gamble and purchased/installed one. Very happy… it is better built than the OEM. I have no idea if they make a replacement for your mower.

Good luck,

Craig

I've had a JD mower for 30+ years, and the clutch went out on it after 10 years. The JD replacement was over $150 back then. It's still working but I sure would try an aftermarket one if I needed another.

Side notes.
Assuming an electric clutch, the electrical winding or the power feeding the clutch may have failed, voltage drop to the clutch, and also the gap between the clutch plates must be set correctly to properly engage. If the charge system or battery are weak the clutch may fail to engage.

When the PTO clutch died on our Husky 54" tractor mower, I bought a replacement from this place

Shipped extremely fast, direct replacement, and I have had zero issues.

Was a bit difficult to achieve the required bolt torque on the shaft (forgot spec). I made this tool to hold the clutch from spinning while I installed a socket extension thru the center and used a torque wrench. The handle on the tool was too short so I had to insert a piece of pipe for better leverage.

I replaced the 16HP B&S motor on a 14 yr old walk-behind Ferris 48”. While I was in there, I considered changing the PTO out. I priced one from Ferris and then found out the supplier…Warner Electric. They discontinued making the model on my mower so I called Warner Electric and spoke with a Tech Rep there, he was super knowledgable and directed me to the replacement part number. Way cheaper to buy direct from WE than from Ferris ..https://www.warnerptodirect.com/. I bought one and it’s on the shelf in case the old one dies. WE Tech said PTO’s typical go ~450 hours. I tend to keep my mowers for a long time.

Side story. Hang onto good older model spare parts.
I bought a spare John Deere 318 garden tractor for $100 from a guy who decided he wanted to sell it and also his own 318. Later after I bought the spare tractor he decided to keep his 318. I found out later that within a month that his PTO clutch had failed and he had to have a new one installed for several hundred dollars. As in checkers if you move wrong you lose.
