After a hearty case of analysis paralysis, I've decided to go for the Makita XGT taking the plunge into that brand. While I have a string trimmer pretty well settled, I'm considering the possibility of adding more brush clearing capability. The HOA is looking for volunteers and down the road I'd like to consider having tools capable for some pretty hefty brush maintenance.

Does anyone know if you can buy a XGT string trimmer tool (I'm settled on the 17") and then swap for a brush cutter interchangeably, or do you need to buy a whole separate attachment or a whole separate tool? I'm sure a separate tool would be more effective, but I'm not clear what the best combination would be.

I have a face shield (though normally I just wear goggles for weed whacking), but is there other PPE I should consider with brush cutting?

I would highly recommend the EGO unit, get the multi-head unit. You can then get additional tools the attach the the same motor and battery head, hedge trimmer and all kinds of other things. I found a hack on YouTube for replacing the strig head with a saw like blade than makes short work on vines and other heavier growth that string trimmers can't cut.

Got the Ryobi 40V. Was expecting it to be a disappointment but it's a beast. Realized later my old gas trimmer that was no longer fixable was a Ryobi and the shaft attachment fit the 40V. No more fuel treatment, always runs, can sit in the shed for a year and will run with a fresh battery.
No regrets.

Just last month I added the heavy brush attachment for my Ryobi 40v system. The blade made quick work of just about everything I cut down with it. I have several areas between large trees that don't get hit with the riding mower and were turning into little oasis' in the yard :)
Only had an issue with one 40v battery dying on me (used).

That old shaft that fits the new trimmer now has a brush blade kit on it. Almost like a miter saw on a stick. Should do the trick.

I got the Ridgid blower and trimmer combo at HD (got if for $200 on sale, but reg price is only $250), includes lifetime warranty even on the battery. I was thinking to go Ryobi, but had issues with the batteries failing days after the warranty expired.
