I can’t see any detail on pic #8 in this post. Maybe someone else can lighten it up to see details
The guy isn’t exactly friendly.

From here it looks like the side was used as an anvil. One of those things you have to check in person.
That was kind of my thoughts exactly that would be a very uncommon place for a vice to break at. Thanks for the picture.I'd let him keep it. I'm no collector/expert, but $600 is a lot of money.
Good idea, digging up images of other vises. I tried to make the photo from your link a little lighter and I can sort of see a similar circular indentation on the side. I may just be seeing things though. It's pretty fuzzy.
Maybe it is the remains of a big old sprue from when it was cast. I can't see any reason for there to be a repair there.
Jaw plates can be in good condition and be loose on the jaw to which they are attached. When I see the big space between the fixed jaw and its jaw plate it indicates to me the possibility of a loose jaw plate. It would be prudent to see if it is in fact loose and if so, why? If loose, I would recommend removing it and cleaning the mating surfaces thoroughly and then reattaching it properly with whatever that entails. He did say the jaws are in like new condition
I love this vise
DeletedI’m looking to possibly buy this Simplex 81P massive vise. He is asking $600. I just need to know if that’s a reasonable price or if I should try and talk him down a bit?
Thank you in advance
