I was sorting and organizing more tools in my boxes last night when I came across and photographed these tools. Thinking I was going to add to another thread, I was shocked to find no mention of awls anywhere in GJ. Seriously - no thread, posts, or titles using the word awl are to be found!

So here it is - the first thread dedicated to those pointy objects that we poke our fingers on while sorting through the screwdriver drawer - awls, ice picks, punches, and anything else you can think of ...

Brian

- Local "City Ice Co" ice pick. It has a local Portland address and 4-digit phone # on it!
- John Deere awl
- unknown awl

I made an attempt to gather all my pointy tools for a family photograph last night, and this is what I came up with.

Aside from the 3 items posted previously, here's a list of tools:

- 4x Snap-on 7 5/8" awls (I got these in a single lot on eBay years ago)
- Stanley awl
- Snap-on mini pick set
- KD tools reamer
- Craftsman cotter pin puller
- Mac tools cotter pin puller
- dental pick set (really handy for cleaning stamped lettering)

Got a couple of them;
The small one of the left end is PET condensed milk can puncture tool.
The longest one is a wore out Coke Cola ice pick bottle opener.

SigO found this Pointy. She decoded the stamping on shaft as Stanley, Sweetheart and Hurwood. Every Stanley Scratch Awl she found had flat sides on handle and none were as long.

I found Rabbit Holes she didn’t.

It’s a Stanley Sweetheart “Hurwood” No. B. Large Handle Ice Pick. According to the author of stuff at “Virginia Tool Works” (https://virginiatoolworks.com/2012/04/19/whos-your-sweetheart/), the Sweetheart appeared in three version from 1920 to 1935. This Ice Pick has the second version.

“The first version of the logo had ‘NEW BRITAIN’, ‘CONN. U.S.A.’ in two lines under the heart, and dates from around 1920. The next version, dating from 1921-1922, just had ‘MADE IN U.S.A’ below the heart in one line. The final logo, dating from 1923-1932, is similar to the second, but the top of the heart drops inline with the bottom of the notched rectangle.”

It’s obviously been used heavily because the handle has been worn nearly smooth. Stanley sold it as a 9 Inch device. Our measures a bit over 8 Inches.

Okay, so is THIS the AWL thread in which we should ALL be posting our AWLS?

Nice (old) thread- I missed it the first time. Here are my hole-making awls , too many scratch awls to count. Top to bottom is a homemade birdcage (square) awl, a long Winchester awl and then four small stitching awls.
