One of my hurdles has always been thinking its a group activity. Im the last of my group of friends still into cars. May take you up on that!
Theres lots of groups up there, but I have almost always done it solo since giving up sportbikes. The last time I did a group event was 2016 when I did a national forester meet up there.

I'd be game for a GJ meet up for some fun driving!

Groups are only fun when everyone is staying in the same place, i.e., Fontana, then just break off into small groups for drives <10 cars IMO.

Our group has grown to anywhere from 12-14 the last 3 years, and it is really hard to keep everyone together. Last time we broke it into two groups on the last day, and that is the plan from the get-go. All the same destinations for lunch and dinner but only trying to keep half the cars together on the route. Definitely though, the best part of the group is hanging out back at the houses not trying to all stay togehter while driving.

When we are up there, the only drives I really care about are the early morning and dusk drives out/back on the dragon, the others during the day, Foothills and Skyway, I either lead and keep the pace reasonable, or just lay back, usually the former. But those to me are about going out for lunch and enjoying the sights and seat time, while getting ready for the evening run(s), before cracking a cold beer!

.....so when are all the local'ish GJ'ers meeting up?

Last night was awfully hot! 97 degrees in the shop, and I was prepping to put the epoxy onto my plywood. It has a qorking time of 15-20 minutes at 75 degrees and I was worried the heat was going to cut my time down. Luckily, I had plenty of help and the epoxy didn't seem affected by the heat. 20260630_171233.jpgmixing it up in smaller batches to keep from overheating. 20260630_191900.jpgi had both my workstands, and a folding table and was also using my garage can to hold sheets while I epoxied them. 20260630_204426.jpgthis one is resting on 2 buckets of flooring glue. 20260630_191914.jpg
I did this a lot, mixing up about 20 oz at a time to keep from melting cups. One batch got really hot on me and started smoking in the cup. It was burning my hand so I just dumped it onto a sheet of plywood and painted the sides of the ply from there. 20260630_204432.jpgno space was left unused. Those two tiny pieces were relocated over to the trailer after coating. We got 3 pieces coated on bothe sides and the other 3 got 2 coats on one side. I will finish them up tonight and should be able to install them tomorrow and knock out the flooring after that.

Last night we hit the final boards with epoxy again, however I moved them all outside which worked great. Being in the direct sunlight they kicked off way faster and once they got nice and tacky, I gave them a good second coat. More mixing20260701_171811.jpg
And lots of fast moving getting the wood coated. 20260701_171807.jpg
I pulled the boat out too and we hit it with the pressure washer on top of the pontoons and all the areas that will be impossible to clean once its together. I also cut finished installing the final bits of sheet metal yesterday. Only one piece remains, and its on the front door which didnt have panel originally. Im not sure if I want to put a panel in it or not. This afternoon the wood goes back on and the flooring goes down, and with any luck we can reinstall the fence and get some of this stuff up and off the floor. The remaining items will be stero install on Friday, new bimini top and installing a second battery with a selector switch. This has been an exhausting project, mostly due to the heat, but I am fortunate my father in law and Jeff have been here to help out.

We got a lot done tonight, first up being that we got the plywood back onto the boat. Its so hot outside I didn't take a lot of pics, but we got that on and secured pretty quick. 20260702_181627.jpg20260702_181629.jpgNext we grabbed a sander and Jeff and I grabbed some sanding blocks and got after it roughing up the wood for the flooring glue.once the wood was roughed up I sprayed off the decking with the hose and dried it off. The sun was helping us dry it out but making it miserable otherwise. Once we got it dry we laid out the flooring on the deck. We swiveled the helm off the side onto2x4s across 2 ladders so we had room to lay put the flooring. 20260702_184858.jpg
The flooring is woven vinyl with a felt like backing. Standard on most all pontoons built today. I cut out for the helm wiring and at the stern around the engine so it would all lay flat. We folded it over on itself and rolled out the glue on the helm side first. We ended up a bit heavy in spots but my father on law had brought this awesome roller to push excess out and flatten the flooring to the deck. That tool worked awesome. After finishing the starboard side we flipped the carpet and did the port side. Like everything else on this project we fimd the second side to be way easier as we develop a rhythm of working. With it all glued down and rolled out we went ahead and trimmed all the excess and got that clear so we could begin installing rear and side rails. I used the old fence bolts to hold the side rails in place and bolted them to the rear rail that goes around the engine. With daylight still we decided to toss some of the fencing and the fuel tank back up there. 20260702_203750.jpgthe fencing is almost completed but we lost daylight. Battery wiring has been pulled back thru the deck and flooring and ready to be ran back up into the seat where the battery lives. Bimini top anchor light wiring is back thru the deck as well and ready to be reinstalled. Tomorrow will be finishing the furniture and the rear fencing as it sets up the rest of the boat fence, installing the furniture and the new stereo system which arrived today. Lots to do, hopefully done by late afternoon amd I can get a quick water test in before Saturday.

I hope everybody had a great 4th of July and got to celebrate with family and friends. The 3rd and 4th were crazy for me with trying to finish up the boat project. After getting the flooring glued down I started at Daylight on Friday getting the railing and fencing situated, and getting ready to load furniture up.20260703_061300.jpg After we had loaded the fuel tank it was super tail heavy and I had to hook the truck to the trailer to keep it level. 20260703_074119.jpgI got the tank wired and plumbed and finished off the rear side panels and set them all in place then we worked our way forward getting the fence bolted down. We set furniture in place and then installed the bimini top so we could have a bit of shade while we worked. 20260703_130321.jpg
I had some stainless screws that looked a bit grubby so I hit them with the wire wheel and cleaned them up a bit since these heads were exposed. 20260703_070453.jpg20260703_070508.jpg
My registeation showed up as well so I sent my buddy a text and wothin an hour he had printed me a set of vinyl numbers 20260704_055517.jpg
Never again will I install vinyl thats not got the face layer like a thermal die cut sticker. This install came out terrible, but got me on the water.

20260703_124223.jpg
I decided against a front gate panel and glad I did after last night. Better vision for sure. 20260703_124227.jpg
The back half of the boat was coming together nicely so I decided to go ahead a add a second battery while I was working on the center seat where the battery lives. I added a selector switch and a deep cycle in addition to the standard starting battery. New stereo went in, along with 4 new speakers. I have to pull the original flip down cover for the single din cd player and make a plate to install my new radio. It sat in there for the day but will look much nicer once a proper plate is made for it to sit into. I was able to add my GPS fishfinder, replace my anchor light assembly, get the boat pretty well situated before we took off to the 4th of July parade everything was looking really good except a little bubble in the flooring.........

That’s one thing I hated about the Cricut, no face layer.

Pontoon looking great!
Thanks Cody! That little face layer would have made installing the numbers a breeze.

At the parade where I saw a few interesting vehicles 20260704_103703.jpg
This guy wouldnt stop playing with his air ride the whole time but was a cool truck otherwise.

After we got back home coolers food and all my wifes gear got loaded up and off we headed to the lake. I stopped to top it off and manged to overflow the tank getting gas on the brand new sheetmetal and flooring. I cleaned it off as best as I could and soldiered on. When we arrived I popped the bimini top up and unhooked the boat and launched it. All went well and we were off! I replaced pur awful foam roll up lilly pad with an inflatable unit I got on sale this year. Its 10x10 and heavy and bulky, but still better than lugging a giant foam pad around. When we finally got to our hangout for the evening fireworks, we got an awesome sunset to enjoy20260704_202840.jpg
And as the evening went on more and more boats came in 20260704_213929.jpg20260704_212847.jpg
The number of boats there is astounding. The fireworks are shot off a barge and on land there is a band, food trucks and all kinds of other activities. 20260704_214851.jpg
After fireworks are done is where it gets sketchy. All those boats are trying to leave at the same time, in the dark with a bunch of drunk morons at the helm of many of them. I got our gear stowed and anchor up and got my fish finder working as gps. I marked waypoints at every channel marker on the way down and every bend so I knew where to turn. As we took off it becomes obvious who knows where they are going and who is just hoping for the best. I had several boats pass me only to see them cut throttle because they werent sure if they were on the right track. We made it back to the dock safely and Jeff and I pulled the guide boards from the center of the trailer. By removing the 2x4s that were in there, I was able to get the boat fully onto the trailer and actually have some tongue weight which made it pull so much better. Home by midnight and ready for the next adventure.

The boat came out great. Glad you were able to get it finished in time to enjoy it for the 4th.
Thanks bud! To jump back a couple of posts, I mentioned a little air pocket under the vinyl flooring. Well I thought it would work itself out like the instructions said. While we were cruising down the lake it became a bubble from bow to stern! The glue failed on one side of the boat and the flooring separated from the wood decking. Im pretty bummed about that but Im hoping it can be redone. Other than that and the sound system lacking compared to the high end system my Moomba had, I was pretty happy with it.

Glad you got everything together in order to enjoy the fireworks. Tough luck with the bubble, but hopefully it won't be too hard to correct!
We had plenty of drama trying to get our barge ready for the fireworks on our lake. If I can get my oldest to capture some picture from the video she shot of the fireworks, I'll make a more detailed post.

I was thinking syringe the glue in several spot heavily and then using a roller, spread it around. But it’s possible it will always look like a repair if the vinyl stretched.

The past few days I have avoided the pontoon after that grind last week, and knocked out a few backed up cars with Jeff. A lady I work with who does outreach like I do had told me she was going to replace the rear bumper harness on her escalade due to a damaged connector. I offered to look at it and see if I could just repair the one bad connector, but she bought the OEM harness and a parking sensor. She got the rear bumper off by herself too, and then freaked out about installing the harness. She brought it over here and I replaced the harness in about 15 minutes.

I got a bit of stuff done on my truck, starting with the front receiver. 20260706_164744.jpgI pulled the truck in, 4 bolts and the bumper was on the ground. 20260706_165701.jpgI went ahead and hit everything with a wire brush and some brake clean and then a quick hit of black spray paint. Then I mounted the front receiver

20260706_170528.jpgwith it in place I put the bumper back on and tried to mark the holes from the backside. Unfortunately that didnt quite work out. 20260706_223032.jpgI marked out the holes and drilled them out with my rotabroach annular cutters. Another wipe down woth brake clean and a spray for the fresh metal. With it all bolted back on, my front plate hides the receiver. I need to pull that plate off and it will be ready for use. My main use is for a winch mount, since my truck is 2wd. I also started on my power seat project by making the power harness. All I had to run is a single power wire to the fuse panel. I went ahead and heat shrinked the wire into braided loom to secure it. I ran out of time before I got the wire ran, but hoping I can finish it tomorrow.

Mark, on and off throughout the years I have driven 2WD pickups and even a K5 Jimmy that was 2WD. When my fellow Midwesterners would look at me like I had 2 heads, I would remind them, 4WD vehicles weren't as common from the 1960s and earlier...and somehow, everyone managed to get around 🤷‍♂️

A posi type rearend and some good tires will take you a lot of places you shouldn't be, that winch will get you back out!

I made it thru some muddy gravel roads last month with some creek crossings in 2wd on heavy duty street tires, yet I got stuck once in my parents gravel driveway. This truck is a 2wd paradox. I have looked at an lsd for the sterling rear axle and its about a grand or so, better tires would help too, but honestly with some weight on the bed which is coming soon with the addition of the camper top and truck boxes and gear, I think my traction will improve on its own.

The two best vehicles I've ever owned for traction were a 4WD K5 and my current Suburban. I only used the 4WD 3 times in the Suburban when I absolutely had no other options, once backing a trailer up hill in wet grass, once pulling a tree out of the way on our muddy road, and once getting through a snow drift that I had no business trying...I'm a believer in the weight.

High School, Dad bought a 63 jeep, wanted to see if 4wd worked ... drove if up a corncob pile in the farm barnyard ... when it stopped, put it in 4wd, verified all wheels turning, was high centered on the peak :D

The cool kids that I ran with had all the cool muscle cars that I loved, they loved the jeep. Many a time we drift busted and the alternator light came on, which meant the snow had packed into the engine compartment and had to be dug out.

lot of shenanigans in that jeep, the only jeep in 4 counties, the only RED jeep. Local city police officer was barely a step above Barney Fife. His traffic stop always started out "I have a report of kids in a RED JEEP". I would respond "how do you know it was us, somebody might have bought one today" Would always end with Officer Eddie saying "knock it off or I'll talk to your Dad at church on Sunday"

My CJ3B had a PTO and a hardtop...with the tall hood as it had the F-Head engine. Baby blue with a white top...and a PTO for all of you keeping track at home.

The "Old Schoolhouse Corner" was a sandpit/dirt pile for the county. We decided to climb the sand one afternoon with the Jeep. It dug in and high-centered at the peak. We got out to lift it up and continue on, then decided to look at the "downside"...well, the county had started hauling sand that day, it was about a 35-40' dropoff.

We backed down the pile and went home 🤦‍♂️

Rule number one in the Sandhills, check the other side of the hill before you go over it. The sand hill changes everyday due to wind drift and so on. Can’t count how many times we came close to messing up and thinking we were going down a hill and it turned out to be a cliff.

One day a buddy was driving his buggy while I rode in the passenger seat and we had someone in the front floor board just cruising around cause we only had two seats. When my buddy went to the top of this one hill he was just about to go over but slammed on his brakes. I had to grab the girl in the floorboard before she went over the front of the buggy and down a 30’ dropoff! Talk about some serious pucker moments!

Quick project for tonight was to install my new headlights here you can see the old sealed beams in my base model Ford.20260706_164750.jpg I picked up a set of LED sealed beam replacements a couple of weeks ago and have been waiting for the pontoon project to finish up so I could install them. Quick and painless install for the lights, and a quick test showed them working.

Jeff showed up in a different car tonight, a Porsche Panamera 4S that got traded in. We looked it over and other than a leaking strut, and a couple of bushings, the car was clean. It has a few little cosmetic things to fix, but he can get it for a steal. 20260710_201501.jpg
Doesnt help me telling the wife we dont need to do another Euro car for her next vehicle when he rolls up in something like this for his wife. 🤣

Finally finished up my power seat install this morning as well. Weather pack connectors installed20260711_090457.jpgpower wire ran and loomed and sealed with heat shrink to prevent loom fraying. I pulled the seat to make it easier on me to access the wiring on the seat side. 20260711_090357.jpgI was glad I did that as it took about 5 minutes to do this side with it flipped on its back. Initially I had no power, the fuse I chose to place my add a fuse in was for the high beams and only has power when headlight switch is on. I moved it to my obd/ power outlet wire and it worked perfectly.

Last install was this billet fuel filter cap I was given by the giy who bought my old topper. The OEM plastic one was starting to round off the nut on the top to remove the cap. 20260711_095455.jpgthis one fit well. Fired the truck up and inspected for leaks, none found and ready to replace the powerstroke cover. Last update for the weekend, my cargo ship is off the coast of Mexico and should hit the Panama canal in 4 days!Screenshot_20260711_102652_DuckDuckGo.jpg
Ready for this unit to arrive. Need to get my *** in gear and get on with wrapping this truck.
