I received This box in January of 2022 and it just went to a corner and then some stuff got on top of it and after 3 years I was able to open it and see this beauty that I only saw on pictures when I bought it on ebay. Unfortunately it's going back to the corner until I get a bigger place. :)

This cool Blackhawk chest was found in a Habitat store we were looking through late this afternoon. I was loading up on a few small items in the tool section and spotted it across a couple of isles where it shouldn't have been. Priced at $28 I just scooped it up and headed for the checkout. I will need to make all three small drawers (missing) and get some pulls. Looking at some of the boxes in this thread I'm guessing late 40's. Tomorrow I'll clean it up a bit and look it over a little closer. Pretty sure the PO had touched up the emblem but nothing else. Ed.

^ Nice snag, Ed! That's the 'Big Chief' P/N "W" chest for the 100-pc set, whereas the smaller 70- and 90-pc sets came in smaller 'Treasure' or P/N "R" chests, without the three small drawers to the side. They had been using those names and designations from the end of the Q.D. era right through NB acquisition. Best references: Page 32 in the 1948 catalog, Page 78 in the 1953 catalog.

I was loading up on a few small items in the tool section
Are you referring to the drag link bits? Or were they inside the chest? I'm curious on the sizes and mfgrs and if they're keepers or not for you. Always looking for GMTK bits (47/64", 15/16" and 1-3/16"). Is the odd one a TRUTH? I think I see NB/Craftsman and maybe a Walden and Snap-on?

^^^ Thanks for the positive ID Lugz. I had just started to zero in on it being a W chest but was finding a few variations in color and front cover design and a few other things over what I was seeing in some of the catalog cuts upthread.

The chest was empty when I found it. I made two stops that day and the first stop was a small junk shop in nearby Aumsville. That's where I picked up a $5 baggie full of the drag link sockets. Here is a better pic of them. From the left. An unmarked socket, Thorsen 574, Walden 1130 with tip damage, Walden 1130, Walden 1130, Proto LA 5446, Cornwell DL-34.IMG_7405.jpg

Off the top of my head, I think the Tractor/Truck sets were in the same box, but I believe the badge is the tell for it being the Master Mech. I would defer to Sonny and Shelby etc.

I can recall a more youthful time when that may have described something more organic. Now I get more excited about drag link bits. 🤣

Hey I done pretty dang good ID'ing them from afar! Thorsen was the only other option for the "odd" one and I should've figured that rather than Truth in your stomping grounds.

I did notice the tag difference on those sets as well. The Big Chief Master Mechanic W box looks right to me.

For sure! Those days are so far behind be now I barely remember them...at least I think that's why I barley remember them.

At any rate, I'm not too attached to any of these drag link sockets. They were just the most interesting thing on the tool shelf and I was patronizing the shop.

You are right, Private Lugnutz. I do not have any catalogs to show the list of tools. Post 202 on this page shows a beautiful example of the "Serviceman Tool Kit" owned by Snapmom. I tried to find the catalog, but failed. May be somebody has it on this board?

That was a box I found, for free mind you, at the end of an estate sale in Portland, It, as you can tell, needed a lot of work, but Smokeshow gave me a better condition CAT marked box recently, and I ended up using that one as a parts box.
I can't believe that you can still find free Blackhawk stuff in the wild present day. Each year that goes by, it gets harder and harder to do. Well done!

Here is one for the book. I've never seen one of these Porto power jack stands.
It's for sale on the wrong side of the country for me. Unless one of you guys will pick it up and ship it to me after I buy it

It's in Catawissa Pa.
Where is this listed? How much is he asking? I have family not too far from there.

I just got one that looks the same. Is there a year stamp or code on these?

I couldn't be happier. I just got this Cat. box today. I've been chasing one down for a few years and finally stumbled over this one. It was only on Ebuy for a couple of hours when I snagged it. Now the hunt for Caterpillar tools Must start lol

IMG_9880.JPGIMG_9884.JPG
Well, that explains the fast "no longer available" status. lol. I was watching this one but I'm really happy it went to the right home.

Oh yes OTG. I remember well that post and was just a bit jealous but happy when I saw it.
Thanks for the reminder.
My box will get some love before I try to fill it. I'm now on the hunt for the Caterpillar marked tools for my box

The blackhawk tools are not typically marked cat. The later snapon set tools were I think. Here it is with the 51 set, posted earlier in this thread.

NICE!!! Welcome to GJ, Tradroncustom !!!
Please document a restoration in a separate thread and add a link to it (with eventually adding a final picture).

Look at this thread by Y'sguy - he did a wonderful restoration

PS If you ever get sick and tired of it in some distant future, please let me know

Hello All!
Just scored this guy, striped 5 layers off and she’s ready for a new life.
Seems someone may have made a custom bottom as I haven’t seen one like it.
Could use and emblem if anyone’s got an extra!
Cheers from Canada

You may have a later production version of this box, which had a decal emblem. I don't see the mounting holes for the metal emblem but that could be just the picture quality and/or my eyes.

Hidden with some tape and bondo in the holes,
Also here’s some bottom shots if anyone’s interested

Well looks like she’s a CAT box
Grabbing a CAT version of the box is a lucky find. The not so good news is that finding a metal CAT emblem is going to be one hell of a search. They're extremely hard to come by.

I borrowed this image from a post by LNKMK8 who found a really nice example of this box about 8 or so years ago. This is what you're after.
