For those that are looking for a dressier knife. Have you looked at a 'Gentlemen's Elite' by Fox? I think the model number is a 271. They offer it in Olive wood, Tulip Wood, White Bone, Horn, Carbon Fiber, and I think another handle flavor. Personally, I think they are really slick looking knives.

I tend to avoid Italian made knives. They often run their steel heat treats on the soft side.

I've always found the Spyderco knives too wide for my taste, thanks to the thumb hole. Though I've never actually put one in my pocket.
Some are definitely pocket hogs, really depends on the model. The one I posted above(chaparral) isn't bad at all. And this is my Smock I was forced to part with a few years back. I recently purchased a new one and am slowly working at getting it back presentable. I'm not a fan of the stock look of the Smock at all.

They can be a little wide, but more than make up for it in how slim they typically are.

The Slym that came out earlier this year (or was it last year) caught my eye, but I've yet to see one in person. It has a removable flipper tab, which is intriguing and baffling at the same time

Today's choice is a Buck 371 that i believe was exclusive to Walmart but am not 100% sure about that. I do know I picked it up at a Wallyworld in Rapid City because I had forgotten to take a knife with me on vacation. I don't think I even needed a knife the entire two weeks but the thought of being without almost killed me.

I'm not a fan of this one and am only posting it because of this thread. At one time I carried it daily but soon discovered that the ends are sharp enough to rub a hole in my pocket. It's a weird feeling when a knife slides down a leg and into a boot. Every single pair of my work pants had a matching hole in the right front pocket. Now I keep it in the console of my service van for cutting up summer sausage at lunchtime.

I have forgotten much (and am too lazy to look it up), but, I do not think that the 371 is exclusive to Walmart, but I vaguely remember that walmart might have a specific one that is. Was it that one? Unsure, but I think that most 371's are wood and yours is not. I either have (or had, I would need to check) a few with that handle. Odds are high that I gave most away just because they are larger than I normally carry without a pocket clip. I thought that specific handle was nice though.

The 371 is the made in Chinal model and the 301 is the "premium" made in the USA.

301 uses a slightly better steel with the BOS heat treatment, which, in my opinion, makes Bucks 420HC steel better than a competitor using mostly the same steel. A different 420 variety is used on their Chinese versions. The 301 also has a specific handle material that (I think) they only put on their USA knives (do not remember what it is, but it works well).

I own a few of the China made versions, but if edge retention matters you want the USA made version. For most people, I don't think it matters, you just sharpen more often. I do like the standard USA made handle material. Not impressed with the standard wood. I prefer the handle that op has over their wood handles.

Nice knife. Only commented because of the Walmart comment. Don't know if it is true or not, but I think that there might have been one because I have heard them called a "wally knife" or something. Been a while though so maybe I am just old with a failing memory.

The 371 isn't a Walmart only but that version, black with blue trim is. At least I think it is; I have never seen them for sale anywhere else, the Buck website included. I have two other 371's brown wood handle and another with a fake stag type grip and they came from other vendors. I have a 301, 303, and the 307 that was discontinued about 30 years ago and in my opinion, the Chinese 371 is every bit as good as a 301, both sharpen equally as well and lose the edge about the same.

I thought this was supposed to be knives you were carrying today. Where are you at to pose on a creek bank with snow in July.

Well I’ll leave this thread to everyone else. This is turning into what we used to call the file photo thread.
Hang around man. Appreciate your contributions here!

I went with an old favorite today to help keep this thread alive. My Blur is gonna disown me if I keep this up.

Do you use that knife to clean fish? Seems like it would be pretty easy to pierce the guts with that tanto blade.
Yes, tantos actually excel at making shallow cuts. I've never had any issues. And with a blade that short/narrow, it's easy to keep your finger resting on the spine to mask the sharp tip and just make the belly cut with your finger at any angle you like with incredible control.
Beautiful knife and beautiful scenery.
Thank you! The trout streams are my happy place.

So I opened the box today. New Spyderco Byrd Cara Cara 2 in hand. First impression, not impressed.

Feels cheap to me because its lighter. Pocket clip on wrong end but can be switched.. if you have a T6 torx, I do.

Spider hole is fine, works for me to open blade. However, the lock is in a bad position. My S&W, lock is in case, a very slight rotation of knife/hand and thumb is releasing lock. Byrd is in the middle of the case on the back side. I have to my my back to an odd or uncomfortable angle to push in the release.

Wife says she likes the Spyderco Byrd better.

It’s a lockback as opposed to a liner lock, that’s just the nature of the beast.

That’s actually a pretty decent pair of knives for a comparison, both occupy the same price and quality range. I don’t care for the Byrd knives in general as I feel they do exactly what you are describing, cheapens the brand as a first impression.

This is the one I carry most of the time. It's German made by Karl Asbeck. I like it because it is thin and I barely notice it in my pocket.
I have had it for about 20 years although when when I was working I carried bigger pocket knives. Now they all sit in my drawer or in the console of my pickup.
Pictures aren't great because I flipped my Kayak a couple weeks ago and lost my phone. These were taken with an old Iphone 8.

I’ve never smoked or drank, so no cigars or whiskey pictures. And this pic was taken a minute ago so not from the files. But I do have too many guns and knives. Here’s the church carry for the day.

Great Eastern Cutlery 48 frame. I’m not a fan of a pen blade secondary, but when they’re selling 48’s, I buy what is offered.
