I wasn't disputing your date, was just trying to say the catalogue pics back up your dates in my clumsy way. Most catalogue pics are the same for X number of years an more than likely the same for the 54 catalogue on.

Trying to understand the RAE is all-

These 3 are the early 1917-early 30's - different base, just curious about the crossover with RAE, maybe theirs none ?

SAM_5312.JPGSAM_5314.JPG

Changed to this style in the mid 30's

Not taken as a dispute at all, just a piece of the puzzle! Compared to you and others here, I’m woefully uneducated on Rae vises.

Beautiful vises. So are you saying that Dawn was absorbed by/predated Rae?

Not at all, (Dawn is still aussie owned and in operation) but being a fellow commonwealth country, thought that there may be some sharing/ copying designs going on- I know Dawn copied the Record 74 for example, and possibly Parkinsons/Wodens Quick release designs and others. also read something about there being a more united style during the WW2 with some British and possibly Canadian/Australian makes.

Just trying to delve into the murkyness of 100yrs ago a little, the more info the better, every little bit helps.

Don't know anything at all about RAE,- another rabbit hole to explore, don't even know when they started.

What model/ year range have I picked up? This is after a quick solvent tank bath (and silicon carbide blasting of the jaw faces). $35 and included and a Sears 5177 (broken mount ear). It's at work but I think the jaws are 3" wide and with the slide flush with the back of the base it's open 3.5". With the screw still fully engaged and the slide still supported, it's just a hair over 4" open.

It’s vises like this that make me think some vise manufacturers did actually paint the vise slides, at least during certain years of production.
That blue looks original, and there are no other colors, but the paint is obviously worn down from decades of use.

SP3: The entry for Yost Manufacturing in Vintage Machinery has this to say about Yost:

"In 1950 the company relocated to Muskegon, Michigan. They stayed there until 1980 when they moved to Holland, Michigan. In 2021 they were acquired by Eastwood Automotive."

Just picked up this rare Panavise.
Dating from the mid 1950’s to early 60’s.
Has the hammered green paint.

What makes this a harder one to find or kind of rare. The ring base writing says “Hunter Industries”. When Colbert patented and started making the Panavise. He used Hunter Industries to make them at first. Then mid 1960’s he took control of manufacturing of them and the ring base was changed to Colbert Industries.

Also another rare thing is the rear post mount. Most are bottom post mount. Supposedly these were made for electronic technicians in big corporations like the aerospace industry.

Yes, this one has very little surface area that's NOT painted. It is original as even the bottom of the locking plate is the same color. Looking to repaint in as close to the original as possible.

Hi fellas. I have been looking for an old Wilton c3 for a while. I ended up finding this one online sitting outside under a carport in El Paso TX. I could tell it was in great shape just a little rust, grease, and 2 layers of paint. I gently cleaned it all back to bare metal. I prefer the bare metal look.

The land of antique iron! "Rust" in far west Texas just don't mean the same thing as anywhere else.

Otherwise, El Paso *****, and I'm qualified to say that, having been born there and attending many the family affair and funeral. The funerals are done and over with, so no reason to ever go back again.

Anyone know much about Hollands vises? I picked up this 26H today. I found a couple catalogs online, but can’t find any references to a 26H. Only a model 26. Anyone know what the H means?

Also, it has a 46 stamped on the underside of the jaw. Guessing that might be the manufacture date? If so, the latest catalog I can find is from 1940, so maybe the H is an updated version of the 26? IMG_8657.jpegIMG_8662.jpegIMG_8661.jpegIMG_8660.jpeg

1960’s to 1980’s Craftsman. Japan made. Restored this one for my nephew.

You have a secret stash of hammered blue paint, or did you buy your own? I just paid an unreasonable amount of money to legally import a few pints of Hammerite Hammered Blue from the UK this spring, and I hope to never pay that much for paint ever again.

The simple things are so good, A successful half hour, no hassles at all which is so unusual- removed the broken bolt, SAM_5298.JPGfound some old style - 5/16 -18, bought some 1" and 2 " length, I can cut to size if required, as I also need one to fasten the anvil 2026-07-22_16-09.png2026-07-22_15-53.png

For those record 74 owners, am I correct in assuming the pipe jaw is not original ?

Going to use it anyway, just curious, it's a little bit sloppy but works, a bit of a template for my Dawn Universal ( 74 copy) as well, I'll cut down the larger one to fit. SAM_5305.JPG

it's in very good condition, the older Records seem to be just that little bit better in fit and use to most. I'm leaning towards painting this in satin clear- seems a shame to hide how good it is. ( Had no original paint left on it)

Leaving the Record (1930ish) just the way it is, has repo original jaw covers on.

Dawn (1966ish) is original paint, with original jaw covers it came with, just missing the original pipe jaw.

Going to get another set of the repos, slightly too small for the Dawn (y'know cause British 4" are obviously different than Aussie 4"), will use them on my outside vice, nice fit, have to be better than the magnetic ****.

SAM_5346.JPG
SAM_5354.JPGSAM_5349.JPGSAM_5368.JPG Now it's finished, no slop in the pipe jaw and looks right

Nope. The Wilton vise is all original. But it is good to know you can still get it. Unfortunately at a high cost.

As seen in the wild. The rare Dr. Doolittle’s Push You - Pull Me vise. 😁
Haven’t seen anything quite like it. Has mounting holes on both ends, but if mounted, how would that work again?

Any markings? How wide are the jaws?

Columbian manufactured a similar style at some point, but it essentially looks like two static jaws of a Prentiss woodworker’s № 169 or № 69 (depending on jaw width). Guessing the dynamic jaw of one/both broke at some point and the owner made a lemon with his lemonade - turning two halves into a Frankenstein of a whole.

What we see is what we got. It’s a ways away, in Northern Maine. I think you’re right with your guess. Those Mainers don’t let much go to waste.

Exactly!

And any guy that can manage to bust the same corner off two copies of the same vise, is certainly the candidate that can bust the D jaw on both!

Just picked up this Prentiss 92 Bulldog, and like so many through bench mounts, the under bench parts are missing. The bolt that goes through the bench does not screw into the body; there is a receiving socket.
Does anyone have pics of what the mounting hardware looks like?
I’m still hoping the PO has it. The vise was her deceased hubby’s (along with a C0, which is why I was there) and there’s plenty to go through. I would like to send her a pic, and maybe it will turn up.

Gawd you people, was thinking maybe we are snobs and look down on the Bubbas of this world, and then went looking for something similar I came across yesterday and laughed at.

30 secs in, I bought this- 2026-07-26_12-22.png

In my defence it said "buy it now' and included postage for $27 AUD/$19 USD

You do realize that is a "Wagon Blacksmith vise" design and was intended to clamp to the tongue of the wagon?

That’s a nice one, Peter! I had a № 90 pass through my hands earlier this year with the original mounting hardware still attached (see pictures). I also have a source where you *might* be able to find the original wing nut. I’ll shoot you a PM

LOL, I do now

Most of the ones I see are around $70+, and missing the handles and clamp washer, for the price $15 AUD (postage would be around $12) thought it was a no-brainer

The ones I was seeing, I thought were high at 5€ - 10€ each. I was cheap back then, now I’d go 5€.

The seller would beg to differ. Here is a line from the description:
“Heavy-duty vintage cast iron bench vise. Operates smoothly. No damage.”
So, everything’s fine. Pay your $85 and move along. 😃

Is there a cutoff date for when the patent date finished, as in was this the same for the next 10 years or more ?

2026-07-26_17-01.png

That has changed over time, for that time period it was 17 years from issuance. They were supposed to stop referencing the patent after that time but not everyone adhered to that.

Thankyou, so that vice could be 1915-1932, it's still a nice item, has the swivel and $250 cheaper than my last failed bid on one - cost 5 Big Macs
Seen 2 in 5 years here, thought my bucket list was done after buying the Dawn vice stand thou,

The jaw plates were soldered on at some stage, loose now but missing the screws, I'll make my own if I can't tap the plates- all good-

I have a John McGain (AUS),same era, which I put out to reassemble a few days ago been curious how similar/ if it's a direct copy ?

colmal: From a 1931 North Brothers catalogue.

and here are the patent drawings in case you want to take it apart or mess with it.

Thankyou, the only thing I won't take of is the nameplate, looks like a very good example to me.

It was posted this morning so shouldn't be long, surely I'm all viced out now, that's close to my bucket list completed

Arrived quickly, screws broken off in jaw plates, no biggy, otherwise no damage, I confess I had a quick 15 sec look at U-tube, which was lucky, easy to see how the slide comes out, and the anti-clockwise thread for the screw holder- that could have been a oops.

Looks like original japanning on the base 2 pieces, just a clean up on those, everything else into the molasses and I'll try to replicate the finish.
