2026 Garage Sale Thread (15th Annual)

Not many actual tools this weekend, just the oil can and the hand drill. But as it happens I'm a huge fan of everything Farberware, and this garage sale didn't disappoint. I have not found any manufacturer markings on the oil can yet, but the hand drill is labeled "DEFIANCE by Stanley." I have one other (newish) oil can, but have never actually owned a hand drill. There was a larger size Farberware percolator as well, but I have one of those that I actually use daily so I didn't want to go all overboard or anything.... The lot set me back ten Semolians.

Picked up a handful of things from a sale this weekend. The fellow had a mixed bag of things- some Snapon, Cornwell, SK- and some other random brands. I couldn’t find a set of anything, just one or two from a set. Thus, two Snapon 1/2” drive sockets, a trim removal tool, an 3/8” drive socket, and a 3/8” flare/open end wrench. Also picked up three Petersen Vise Grips. The two short, offset wrenches are both 1/2 x 9/16- one is Indestro and one is Durochrome.

$5 for it all, and the milk crate I carried them around in was included.

That oil can looks exactly like the one I have from my dad's leavings post divorce. I'll see if it has any markings left later

Regrettably I wasn't able to fully pick and dig at the steam up as I had my wife and son with me who were rapidly approaching the end of their picking limits so I went through quicker than I would have liked. But this isn't always a bad thing as I was able to come home with minimal finds

Yes. It was buried in a box of junk screwdrivers. I asked the vendor the price, and he said "fifty cents." I didn't dicker.

I plan to clean it up a bit tonight and look more closely for markings. Kind of weird that something wouldn't have been stamped into it, given the age of it. Maybe there will be something on the inside when I open it.

As I recall mine was a decal, so it may have been made for multiple sellers.

... a tiny "Adjustable" c-clamp and a mis-marked tube flaring device that goes from 1/8" to 5/8". I grabbed it because of those way-cool wing nuts.

At the "Habitat" store, I picked up this lovely little German-made ceramic dancing fraulein frog 75% off because she's got a big crack.

They are not mixed up. They may not be in ascending order, but that is by design. It makes the beam of the flaring block stronger.

If you are really OCD, they are slightly wrong. Left of center are all the "odd" 16ths, right is "even". But when they skipped 9/16, that threw the 1/2 (8/16) on the wrong side of center.

Can't get the real calipers on the phone to compare, but my eyeball calipers ( expired calibration certs) think the growth in diameter matches the markings.


But otherwise, I think they are fine also.

Weird visit at a pawn shop yesterday. I’d never stopped there before. It was about to dump rain, so I said let me check it out.

There were two bargain bins of hand tools. I found an old Blue-Point 5/8” doe offset wrench. Nice. That got me a bit excited. Then saw a rusty BP dbe. I quickly realized most of the wrenches were ancient and needed to be looked at closely.

After making a pile of 8 wrenches or so, a friendly employee came over when he was done helping others. I showed him my pile and he said I won’t charge you more than $1. Great I thought, $1 per wrench is fair.

I followed him to the register where he said my total was 0.95 cents and he was going to steal another nickel from me. I’m like, “What?”. He must have given me the rainy day discount.

Figured I’d test my luck and grab the rest of the interesting wrenches, and S-K 1/4” sockets + a Williams socket I had organized into a pile. There were hardly any other sockets.

I figured the guy’s going to hit me for a few dollars now. I didn’t really care how much after the sweet deal he already gave.

His reaction, he grabs all the wrenches, shoves them in a bag, and says “Please leave us an excellent review online!”.

So, in the end, it was $1 even for this pile! Strange, I know. I’m pretty sure the guy was from another location I had visited a long time ago. Needless to say, I left a happy customer!

Nope..I told him I'll be back. It'll probably be two years before they get any new tools. Seems like that just about anywhere.

Just grabbed this nice little Parker 183 from the junk store. Damn near mint! I’ll take that for $20 all day! They had a Prentiss 19 as well but the static jaw had snapped at the jaw tower and been repaired, a mounting foot was missing and the pin was gone. Surprisingly the tail was not split!!
