Got the rusty crusty positive battery cable on the 85 F150 project truck swapped out with a Sherco-Auto one that has an auxiliary lead built into it.

Took advantage of the break in temps to spruce up the gazebo and dock.

Built a platform for the rod holders so I don’t have to bend over so far in the lawn chair to grab a rod.

Still need solar lights for the top of each post.

3am Old Blue F150 steering column surgery. New turn signal switch going in.

De-pinning the connector to snake it through the column.

It came with a hooptie steering wheel but I am putting an OEM steering wheel back on. It should be in tomorrow and we might be back on the road.

A little Van Halen to keep things moving in the shed this morning.

My retirement gig tenure as a part-time Menard's morning stocker came to an abrupt end this morning.

There was about 90 minutes left in our shift (5-9am) and we had all the freight stocked when we (the men anyway) were told to go outside, pull weeds around the perimeter of the building and parking lot, pick up trash and then sweep the parking lot until 9am.

I thanked them for the opportunity I had been given, told them I enjoyed my time there up until this ridiculous order, clocked out, turned in my name tag/timecard and left...for good.

I took the job as something to give me a routine, get me out of the house and get me some exercise. It was an indoor, no stress job but it wasn't enough money to really matter to us and it sure wasn't enough to be a groundskeeper or landscaper when I had been hired to stock freight.

I am actually a little baffled they even told us to do it in the first place and kinda surprised I am the only one that pushed back. Maybe it's just me. IDK

My buddy that has the bodyshop has been bugging me to come help out, part-time with some of his office work. Billing, invoices, receivables and stuff like that. I may end up taking him up on the offer. His shop is about 2 miles from my house.

Then again I may just stick to fishing and tinkering in the shed.

I was self-employed for the last 30 years of my working career. The day it became a “job” was the day I decided to retire. Sounds like we both are on the same page in that respect. If I ever did decide to go to work for someone it wouldn’t ever be because I had to, it was just be to either help them or for my own experience and education about something I would like to do and learn.

Finally made it through the whole thread. This is quite the shop you have built ! You love the porch and really wish I had made mine larger than just a covered entry.

When I “retired” from my in town job I told the newly appointed manager about a year before I quit that I was going to be done in “about a year” and they should go find someone to take on the external IT projects that I had lined up. I got laughed at and was told “that’s a year away, you’ll change your mind, everyone needs a job”. I calmly responded with “you’re confusing me with someone who NEEDS this job with someone who WANTS this job and you’d better not do it again”. I got laughed at again and went about my duties for around 11 months. Manager asked me to design a project that would have been easily 6 weeks out of town for the following fall. I told him I was going to be done in a month. He laughed and said “get to work”. I looked at him, held out my hand and said “I wish I could say it’s been good to work for you but I can’t so I hope you do well in life and I know the front doors will not permanently close just because I’m here”. I handed him my keys, went outside and remembered my work van was how I got there that morning. Oops. Didn’t take long and his boss came out and we had a nice chat and I agreed to do my last month (turnt into 6 lol) only if I didn’t have to answer to A-Hole manager guy. Twas the best 6 months ever and I logged close to 95% billable hours vs the barely 60% under the oppressive thumb of A-Hole manager guy. I came and went as I pleased, I asked for worker bees a week in advance like I was directed to do and we got all kinds of things done. The end date approached and I got to lead a meeting with the management team about what I was doing to get so much done.

Now I’m the A-Hole at work but being self employed is something I’d never give up now that I have it.

Anyway.

I've always pushed back on ridiculous asks, and it's cost me opportunities. I walked out on my first job at 16, working a McDonalds when one day I just had enough of the favoritism, and always being given the most remedial tasks. The fat *** boss lady pushed my final button and I waved goodbye and walked out as the lobby was the busiest it had been all night. I guess I showed them; the funny part is about 10 minutes later my parents stopped in (first time ever) and everyone was talking about the kid who walked out (me). Got grounded, but the lesson I learned was to not put up with s**t. Ended up in a better job making more money two days later.
