Some years ago, I was walking across the campus of a seminary. I was behind two students, one of whom was telling a story about his time as a contractor. he got a lot of teasing for not swearing. Until he shot a nail into his hand with a nailgun (he showed off his scars), and exclaimed "oh my. That hurts." After that he said "they never gave me **** for not swearing.".

As printing was an associated business to my own I had a relationship with a local printer to offer printing for my own clients. Once while hanging around his shop and mezmerized by the presses I noticed a typo on a job coming off the press and pointed it out. I was shushed with him pointing out the possibility for a re-run of the job. "Customer proofed the job".

Interesting that you should ask.
He is correct in that the customer proofs the job so they are ultimately responsible. To halt or interrupt a job mid process is a huge PITA.* Unless a very long run (not his specialty)much of the cost is amortized before ink hits the paper.
A pressman's job is to provide the best image not second guess the customer's intent.
It was a chance finding by me only because I was staring at a page as they came spewing from the press.
Did he exploit another's mistake? Perhaps, I have no idea if the mistake was caught by his customer or if the job was re-run. He was a decent guy and if a re-run was called for most of the plates could have been re-used so the cost would have been less than first run. If the mistake was done on his end he'd surely have eaten it so I had no reservations trusting my customers to his care.
* Potentially the job could be stopped (only briefly) and a call made. There would be very little time for the customer to make a decision about moving forward or not and that is provided the decision maker could be reached at all. A can-o worms best left unopened.

I assumed he knew before he started printing. I shouldn’t assume.
