Hello. My name is Paul. I'm a self employed machinist by trade, primarily CNC milling. I found this site while looking for information on an old 1946 Atlas model 53 drill press that I just acquired. I'm having fun getting it cleaned up. This looks like a great site for this kind of stuff. I hope I can contribute to your community.1000015501.jpg

Welcome from Shelby Twp!

Those Atlas machines have a few tricky parts; the spring housing, the feed handle hub, the spindle pulley, the base.

Yours is missing the feed stop assembly. The oe assembly is the bolt-on style, but if you look for a replacement, the clamp-on style will also work.

Below are a couple links to some Atlas motor info:

Hi Frank. I grew up around that neck of the woods. I lived in Roseville before moving to Harsen's Island when I was 9. We moved to Algonac after that. I still have cousins living in the Detroit area suburbs.

Thank you for the links on the motor. That's one of the things I haven't taken apart yet. I haven't disassembled the spindle pulley yet, either. Just removed it from the head. I just got the rod for the feed stop, but no bracket. I will probably make a bolt on style as close the original as I can. Maybe someone here will be able to share some pictures and dimensions for reverse engineering.

One more comment on your 53. The smaller 12-3/4" Atlas drill presses did not come with the column collar. They did come standard on the heavier 15" drill presses, but they are rarely seen on the smaller ones. And it looks like you've got one of the rare ones installed on yours. Nice little bonus.

I see that it's not in the part's list. I didn't notice that before. Cool!
