Remember the Skoda Cube van I was building??

Remember the 16 inch alloys I restored for it?

Have you seen the results?

Tonight I think I got lucky.

8 hours after the ad was posted.

Collecting tomorrow afternoon.

Wheels and tyres with hubcaps collected.

And they really are extremely good.

Next job will be to clean everything.

Then get the tyres stripped off the steels

And fitted to the new 16” Skoda alloys.

103 miles or 160 km trip worth doing.

So I guess I bought the car sight unseen, except for three photos.

Front. Diagonal side and rear view.

The rest based on a call and some texts.

It’s a 21 year old car that’s done 140k miles and lived under a terrible tree the last 10 years.

On collecting, no real surprises, but loads observed that was not ideal.

Worst was probably the fact that ( and I doubt anyone would be confessing to that) the car had been really well washed with either a scotch pad or pot scourers.
Leaving the paint horribly scratched.
It probably had an illegal alien car wash a couple of days before I collected it.
These guys use a horrible chemical called TFR or Traffic Film Remover. Usually sprayed on all over with a garden weed sprayer or similar. It certainly damages aluminium and paint.

The photos also show both drivers door and passenger door were scraped past something too closely.

And then a bunch of other damage in the photos.

But of course I decided that I would just address them bit by bit using various legal and illegal tools.

That was Saturday.

On Sunday I proceeded with the paint and surface repairs.

Pictures below.

First cousin to an A3. Both daughters have had similar Golfs. The younger one has moved from a Mk5, like yours, to a Mk7, while the older one has moved on to a Touran, as she has 3 kids and needed more space. Essentially still a Golf though.
BTW, I have already subscribe.

The worst of the lot are the damn Martian car washes 😀!

Ps
We have confidence in you! I am sure both the scratch and rust issues will be properly taken care of.
I couldn’t use correctly descriptive language for getting banned or hated.

Do some serious research on illegals coming into England.

Being looked after and motivated to come here. 🤮🤮🤮🤮

I love the Touran.

If I could have one, I would, but their values stay high.

Starting the cleanup of the Golf, I removed the plastic hubcaps and cleaned the rims, followed by the hubcaps.

Only one VW badge left on them, which I removed.

After various attempts clean them the burned in brake dust of 25 years and much kerbing, or curbing, I decided to spray paint them with some silver alloy wheel paint as they were now super clean.

Scotch pad on all aspects of the caps, followed by two coats of paint.

Results were pretty good for planned application

Small change, big results

Next job.

I guess some will call it paint correction.

Me?? A lot of had work, or machine polishing with G3 compound and then hand buffing with polish of some of the worst areas after buffing the car again by hand.

On Monday I followed this up with some Auto Glym plastic and trim restorer to address the grey, dull plastics.

I also added a pinstripe down the side, which I am absolutely in two minds about, but expect to see it removed in a while.

Overall, two days worth of effort had tripled the kerb appeal of this car

I have also started to replace and repair some tired parts

More about that later

You know that feeling when a bit of grinder dust ends up in your eye, despite wearing protective glasses?
Remember the feeling of going to pee when you have been preparing hot chillies to add to your food while drinking a few beers?

You know…….

Things that bug you, despite not seeing it.

Golf badge on the rear was missing the L

Thanks to a bag of letters from various cars and trucks Dennis has repaired in his shop, I managed to find about 5 letters L

Added the only ( almost ) correct one to the rear, I will need to remove it and redo it because the double sided tape managed to grip and distort it ever so slightly…… nope, it needs to be redone. PS. Yes I do need a VW Golf sized L letter.

But happy it’s done.

Polishing the drivers side doors to within an inch of its life…., worked.

And pinstripe from the passenger side.

Keep in mind the front fender has complex curves in multiple directions. Creating a weird wave pattern to a straight line.

And of course, engine bay and scuttle cleaned properly.

You'll get there, we've seen this movie before!
As a rule, with some exceptions, I don’t like most prequels and sequels, but one can never get tired of watching certain movies, along with their prequels and sequels, over and over again!

Sir Rian’s movies are most definitely all in the latter category.

Let the resurrection process began!

Great job! Car already looks vastly improved.
Remember a few weeks ago I mentioned that I was due to do a collection?

Tonight I was meant to do it and meet a friend called Clive at 5.30 about 5 miles from home.
At 4.45 my Polish lodger, Bart says to me that he could not find parking for his car at London City Airport. Could I take himand drop him off please, he has to be in Dublin tonight for an early start in the morning.

So I cancelled Clive.

London City Airport charges you £8.00 to drop someone off at the airport. That is £8.00 pr $10.00 for 5 minutes, then EVERY ADDITIONAL MINUTE IS £1.00 or $1.30 up to 10 minutes.

How did we get to a situation where the government id taxing every movement we make??
To drive through one of two tunnels is an additional £4.00 or $5.00 in each direction

My new car, being a 1.4 petrol/gas is actually exempt from another tax called ULEZ ( Ultra Low Emission Zone) of around £14.00 or $ 18.00 from 6.00 to 22.00 Supposed to reduce emissions. But if you pay the TAX The bad emissions magically go away, like your money (which supports not citizens, but illegals) Depending on your route, you could be liable for another tax of around £12.00 per day. ABSOLUTELY INSANE HOW WE ARE BEING WALLET RAPED. And nobody is doing a thing about it.

Welcome to not so impressive Britain.

So after dropping Bart off, i headed the 34 miles homeward.

And about 10 minutes from home I called Clive to see where he was.
He had just picked his 86 year old mum up and was headed home, so we met up on the way, half a mile from my home for s chat.

And to collect this beauty.

Go on……. Use ChatGPT to figure out what it is and what it’s worth.

It was actually on the way to scrap.

Life is good.

In the meantime I am trying to create videos that are valuable or informative, orrrrrr even amusing

Of course spending money on expensive kit will not get me anywhere.

But Bart the Polish lodger is a gadget freak. He suggested I get a gimbal type thong so the camera can follow me.

No clue.

But I bought this for £50.00 today.

Fingers crossed.

YouTube algorithms and a new level of disinterest possibly….??

And another video that I wasted hours of my time, making.
Am I crazy for doing it, wasting my time?
constant ambivalence about it..
I believe many of us, including yours truly, have already subscribed to your YouTube channel and obviously find your videos very interesting. The problem is not with your videos; the issue is with the crazy viewers of the world.

The entertainment in general will always trump anything else that is actually tangible, educational, practical, and useful. Add to this the shorter and shorter attention span of every new generation, and we are left with short, not-so-meaningful content that captures their interest!

Which kid these days wants to watch how an internal combustion engine works versus some idiot setting his pants on fire and jumping from the second floor of a house into a pile of snow?

Obviously, it is your decision to continue to put all this effort into making these videos but rest assured that all of us here find your content interesting, educational and yes even entertaining.

Thank you.

I get all you say.

That last Golf video probably had nearly 5 hours preparing in it, including filming with a 36 minute video resulting from it.
24 hours in it had 24 views, 48 hours in its at 65 views.

Varying from a different pair on my old channel, much older yes.

8 years and 247k views. It is a great video.

Possibly my most popular evrr.

And then a short cat video that blew up in a week to 23k views.

With the effective demise of Photobucket the videos are my records of my work.

So onwards I guess.

Last night while watching your videos, directly from YouTube , I also came across many videos about what happened to my absolute favorite custom car builder Ian Roussel and his great tv show Full Custom Garage. In short he hated all restrictions of a tv show and crazy editing etc to fit the show into a time length and format that producers demanded. He broke up with the show and went on his own posting on YouTube basically unedited videos.

Here are a couple dumb suggestions from someone that knows absolutely zero about putting a video together. But sometimes an outsider might be needed to look at some issue from a different perspective.

1- have you thought about throwing the raw video at AI and let AI edit and shorten it. Saves you time plus you never know AI might have data on people’s crazy taste and likes and therefore it might edit it and shorten in a way that makes it more popular?

2-Same idea as above with AI but instead of an actual video , ask AI to use your photos to sequence them as a video?

Personally I would prefer the first idea .

By the way I could not find the video that I accidentally run across about Ian and which was AI generated and was great , but I found this one which I believe is also AI generated

I only have two iPhones.

A 12 ProMax as camera and editing tool.

A massively outdated 8 as a telephone and occasional camera.

So I do edit only on iMovie.

Sometimes I have as many as 30 items to gloop together and edit into something that resembles my work.

Been away, was great to catch up on the progress, was shocked at the selling price for the Scenic…very low!

I’ll share some news possibly of interest, my 22yo has dragged home another project…paid a fair bit more than typical but also suspect this one will stick around and not be a flip. ‘63 Cali C10, 350/350, has lots wrong but hopefully a project he won’t go upside down on 🤞🏻

Continuing the search for the parasitic drain via OBD 2 reader netted no further clarity.

But of course the driver’s electric window also did not work.

So on opening up the inside door panel, I realised the School of YouTube was my next stop.

Suddenly German engineering took on a whole new meaning.

So to get to the actual riser mechanism you have to remove the outer door skin.

Bart the Polish lodger has an Amazon Prime account, so next day delivery on the mechanism.

We also ordered a new central locking module to counter test the original fitted unit.
This ultimately led us to believe that the actual central locking unit is not faulty.
Following this, ChatGPT suggested this id a common problem with the actual wiring loom where it passes from A-Pillar to door. Breaking the copper wires inside the plastic sheathing. So a job for later. The central locking does work on the key.

Video

When you remove the outer doorskin there is a sequence that would allow you access

So once the skin is removed, the diagonal cross brace which has two different types of fasteners comes out

Next up, remove the glass, after pushing the mechanism down manually all the way. The rubbers were stuck to the glass

Then remove the broken mechanism, which had a snapped actuator cable.

Refit the new mechanism, fit glass, fit motor on inside of door after alignment of gear teeth, test glass riser, refit diagonal brace, refit all connectors followed by door skin and then inner door panel

Test everything again and allow door sensors and glass to Auto-calibrate glass rise and fall

Sigh with relief

Smile at the fist full of cash you saved vs a dealership repair

You stated that “ChatGPT suggested this id a common problem with the actual wiring loom where it passes from A-Pillar to door. Breaking the copper wires inside the plastic sheathing.” Is it possible this could also be causing a short and hence the parasitic drain?

As for the practical side of things, I’ve also been trying to simplify the TV setup at home. A Free Universal TV Remote Control on the phone is surprisingly handy when switching between YouTube, regular channels, and streaming apps.
I agree with the general point, although I don't think it's necessarily just an attention-span problem. YouTube rewards whatever gets people to click and keep watching, so educational content has to compete with some pretty extreme entertainment.

That said, there is definitely an audience for detailed technical videos. The fact that people here keep coming back and discussing them is proof of that. I'd much rather watch someone patiently explain why an engine works the way it does than watch another staged stunt that I'll forget five minutes later.

Hopefully the creator keeps making the videos that interest him. They may not always get the biggest numbers, but useful technical content has a much longer shelf life than whatever happens to be viral that week.

Thank you for taking the time to post.

I appreciate your input and support.

To me these videos should be primarily a resource for others.

Sometimes technical is good, but I prefer a bit of humour.
