I haven't been on in a while, but really wanted to share this score!

I had a mens breakfast at church Saturday morning, and I was helping cook. My wife decided to go to a street that had their annual yard sales and then shop the area for more.

I finished up at the breakfast, and called my wife to see if she found anything I should look at. I was initially going to go home and then found a sweet looking estate sale with TONS of tools... So naturally i headed that direction.

My wife ended up on another small neighborhood street that had some sales, and I got a text and call from her... "This guy has a pretty big tool box for sale... Are you interested? It's kind of expensive for a yard sale, but it's MAC.. $300... " 😳😳😳

I looked at the picture she texted me, and I see that it's a MAC tech 1000!! I had backed off on looking for a deal on a bigger box for work, as I made my MAC select series 42 inch work with some add ons. There was some chatter between us and I headed her direction.

I pull up, and go look at the box. Its well used and maybe slightly abused, but a solid box to put in to service. Not rusted out, and everything slides smooth! The guy was trying to sell me an anything that wasn't bolted down, and he says "I got a JD lawn tractor if you're interested..."
(Side store here: I scabbed our $50 riding mower together for its 5th season with us, and was planning to find a replacement next year. This thing is a trooper but it's rough...)

Long story short, it's hot flat tires, hot looks pretty dang nice. He aired them up, and fired the thing up.. it PURRED! He said $150, but that he was willing to negotiate. I asked about a package deal for the tech 1000 and mower, and he jumped at my $400 offer.. We agreed on a $50 deposit and I came back later with my trusty old truck and my BIL's small trailer.

Come to find out, it's was a single owner rider when he got it (he worked at a dealer and got it as a trade in at cost) this baby had 160hrs!! It's a made in USA e120 hydrostatic!

It was missing the front deck leveling rod, and I got that from the dealer for $30!

So all in all I'm STOKED at $400 thanks to my awesome wife!! Im hoping to get some liners, build a top of some kind, and take it to work over the weekend. I'll have to get better pictures later!

Took a trip to see a race, stopped at a ReStore and a couple thrift shops.
Williams 1-1/4×1-1/16 DBE, Proto 15/16×1" DBE, pair of Mac punches, Channellock 447 in dark green, Proto phillips screwdriver, Two Guys Deluxe screwdriver, very clean NAPA 3/4 socket.

Why do I only find Channellock stuff in colors that aren't blue?

I drove 2 hours to these FB marketplace sellers who were only 10 minutes apart from one another. Then made a stop on the way home. 3 good deals!

Buy #1. Lot listed for $50: PLOMB 5849 'Big Bertha' 1" drive ratchet, Vulcan H-51A 3/4" ratchet with Williams H-2A handle, TRW 3/4" extension, PROTO 1" to 3/4" adapter, Snap-on 3/4" to 1" impact adapter, Bonney 3/4" to 1/2" adapter, SK 1/2" to 3/4" adapter. Sockets (1" and 3/4" drive) from left to right: Armstrong 2" impact, Snap-on 1-5/16", Truth 1-5/16", Craftsman 1-11/16", Chicago Pneumatic 1-1/2" impact, Snap-on 1-7/16", Craftsman 1-3/8", Craftsman 1-5/16", Williams 13/16" 8-point, Armstrong 15/16" impact, PROTO 7/8" impact. The seller was kind enough to throw in a classic Snap-on air ratchet for free! What a guy!
IMG_1279.jpeg
The PLOMB ratchet's mechanism has been welded shut. According to the seller, the teeth broke inside, so the ratchet was welded shut and used as a breaker bar. I'm going to buy a 1" drive PROTO rebuild kit to throw in there and get it working again. But before I do that, I have to grind out the welds to free the male driver from the female gear. PLOMB and PROTO 5849 drivers are assembled with those two parts. But the PROTO rebuild kit includes everything BUT the male head. So I will have to carefully salvage mine to be used for the restoration. The ratchet measures 26.75" long, which is longer than others I have seen online that are between 25" and 26" long. It is very heavy. I'll found out exactly how much it weighs later today when I bring a scale to my shop. I am just so happy to have this tool in my growing PLOMB collection.

Some more pics of the Vulcan 3/4". I am a sucker for Vulcan tools (by Williams). I just love the logo. I did a teardown cleaning on this thing and it works great now. The 1st pic below is from before.

Buy #2: Lot listed for $25. Two Snap-on underline logo wrenches (10mm, 21mm) and a set of 3 old Snap-on clutch-head sockets in different sizes.
IMG_1276.jpeg

Buy 3#: So on the way back home from the other FB buys, I stopped at this thrift store along the route called Nifty Thrift. I didn't see any tools, so I asked the lady there who owns the store. She said she only had one tool in stock, that just recently came in. And she points to THIS big boy sitting on a pile of clothes on the counter. A PROTO 1-7/16" combination wrench!! Like, whaaaaat?? I was dumbfounded. It's been modified with offset on the open end, but for $15, I had to. It's now the longest wrench in my collection!

@Tapeguns: THAT is a great find! No good sense of scale until it was in your hand, then WOW, that's big!

I hope you're able to restore it (at least functionally), please keep us updated!

A nice mid week market place buy. Kind of a strange deal. I saw this box listed Saturday morning a couple towns away for a decent price. I messaged the guy and said I would take it for his asking and could go get it right then. This was 30 mins after he listed it according to FB. He says he just left his house he won’t be back til Wednesday! Uh ok. Then the listing gets taken down that afternoon. I don’t hear anything til yesterday, he says he’ll be at the house from 11-12 that’s it! Can’t do that cause I had fire alarm testing at work to deal with today. So called up my pops and see if he can go pick it up for me and he agrees. So here is what I had waiting for me when I got home from work today. Snap on KR557G with a key! Really nice shape just dirty. All in all it worked out but now I have some organizing to do.

I would be willing to bet that if you unscrew that gear assembly in that Plomb big birtha, it will just fall right out. Worth a shot anyway.

Nice finds!
Thanks! And ohhh yeah, it was a battle. In short, the breaker bar mod created tons of shear force on the screws overtime. Their strength was totally compromised. It took hours of flathead screwdrivers, a manual impact driver, extractor kits, and lots of PB Blaster.

Never seen a tooth break off like that. Interesting.

My big one was like that. Keep in mind the shear is all on one tooth, but over time you would expect the loads to be moved around?

I'd grind flat and try a press on the male anvil-drive to see if it shears the weld. you also need to preserve the "bearing" surface in the head of the ratchet.

Today is our local Restore's warehouse sale. The 3rd Thursday of the month, they let people into the warehouse for special pricing. Normally the pricing is over the top, but I found these and negotiated a price of $4 each.....

I want to soak them to clean them, but don't want to use Evapo-rust as I don't want to remove the painted surfaces (or whatever remains). Any suggestions?

My first ever Restore purchase today!

99 cents (OK, $1.05 with MA sales tax) got me a (probably overpriced) Craftsman USA long-ish mini screwdriver (1/8, 41589 L WF).

Doesn't look like much / any wear, but it's got maybe the start of some corrosion. This tool, and the rest of the miscellaneous stuff in the bin, felt sticky and disgusting.

SWMBO wanted to check out a new thrift store…damn if they didn’t have some tools. I left behind a Milwaukee corded grinder because it was abused, but I did come home with this…a lightly used Milwaukee HD sawzall that has a 360 rotating head…

I returned to last weeks estate sale and picked up a bunch more stuff for $100. Was happy to find the handle for the 3/4 snappy breaker bar and ratchet from last weekend. Should have a lifetime supply of hack saw blades and brass punches.

Maybe she wasn't indicating the absence of tools, but instead commenting on you and your Vanagon!
I was driving the Toy. Much less reputable-looking than the Brick. But I could see from the road it was all "gals and kids" stuff.

Had another today. Storage unit sale, so I actually got out of the rig and took a look. Nope.

Not much in the way of yard sales here.
There was one only 2 miles from home, their Facebook listing showed a tool box with some stuff in it and a visible price of $100.
The top of the box showed nothing but a maybe MAC as well as a H.Freight breaker bar.
I was first to show up & the box already had a sold sticker.
Someone did the deal sight unseen. So I'll never know what was inside.
I did pick up a few bread & butter items at a good price. Rino Ramps, jack stands, beer lights & whatnot.
Then I saw this thing which at I first thought was broke or parts:

IMG_3842.JPGIMG_3843.JPG

Turns out Snap-on JC-10 is a sort of unicorn collectable.
Designed to do this:

Can I borrow that next time I need to get under the dash? Needs legs about eighteen inches longer, 'though.

At first, I thought it was for "enhanced interrogation"--because all despotic regimes choose Snap-On!

My grumpy back hates working under dashboards, on vanities under sinks, etc etc.
I feel your pain--no, wait, that's my pain I feel!

You forgot to mention getting out of deep, bucket-style lawn/patio chairs. I need a grab bar for that.

As for the kind of vehicle, the Brick at least has a couple of feet of clearance under the dash. The Toy is pretty much no-go territory.

Hit up an estate sale and scored a BUNCH of Snap - On. Most stuff was not priced and it was make a pile and get a price. It was already 85 degrees in dark buildings with no ventilation, they had free bottled water! There are 38 Snap On wrenches, some of the SAE got cut off on the top of the photo. Everything below the puller is metric. On the Snap On sockets and ratchets metric is on the bottom and SAE is on top. Some of the ratchets need rebuild kits. The 4th and later photos are the non Snap On, a few Craftsman and Matco pieces in there. I recognized the tackle box right away as Sears because of the Fish handle. The trays inside were broken so I just removed them. The painted Coleman lantern is actually a 1963 Sears dual mantle. Might try to get it running, I'd use a different vent to protect the paint on this one.
Spent an even $100 at this sale, not bad.

Stopped at three sales today, plus a Restore.
55479682618_cfcb04ce9a_b.jpg
two of the sales were way out in the middle of nowhere, farm/shop type sales. I found the Milwaukee charger and finial at the first, meeting a young farmer and his kids on a lovely piece of land, while the second is where I picked up the Brown and Sharpe digicalipers and Craftsman 6" lathe follower rest, which will pay for all of this. $17 between the two stops, and the second, all the way in the opposite direction, was not one of my original planned stops, just worked out really well. I am taking a chance on the B&S, but there was no corrosion in the battery tray, so they should be good.

55479740969_083a81bc19_b.jpg
The Restore had some very interesting stuff come in, and I am a sucker for T&D sets, so the Greenlee came home, along with the Wards clutch aligner and early P&C dykes. $20 for those

But it was the first stop that really made my day
55478572552_e23464fb58_b.jpg
a vintage dental drill, which is going on my work bench as my new rotary tool! Apparently, the sellers father used it for that for 60+ years, and I think I will hold onto the tradition. He was only asking $10 and I was more than happy with that!

That deserves suckage for the drill, especially if it's a Foredom....
