I recently broke a simple storm window. The panel is 23x43" which seems bigger than what Lowe's or HD stock. Any suggestions for places to check. There is one glass so I used in the past to get a mirror but I'm interested to know if there are other low cost suggestions. I only need to glass panel, not the rest of the window.

I have used a local glass store, but found that even a small pane was relatively expensive because it was in an exterior door.

Original 1940 glass pane was not safety glass, but the "professional" glass place said I needed to buy safety glass because it was one pane in a French door. The fact that there were at least 9 other panes of 1940 non-safety glass did not change their rules. I needed it done quickly, so I just went with it.

The storm window isn't safety glass. However, the childhood scar on my right hand reminds me why safety glass is the right call for say a storm door....

They’re right, as much I as following safety regulations bothers you. It’s been required for decades in doors, even when the original glass wasn’t tempered.

You can order tempered glass online and they will ship it to you if you can't find locally. Hardware stores and the like will generally only deal with annealed glass, but if there is a glass shop you can get a piece of tempered easily.

Well I placed an order with the same local shop I used to get a large mirror when we first moved into the house. Not expensive though I need to get it during regular business hours.

Local independent glass shops or auto glass repair places can often cut custom flat glass to that exact dimension for a reasonable price. Another budget-friendly option is checking architectural salvage yards for an old sash of a similar size and pulling the glass from it.
