I don’t know if you’ve ever mentioned it but I’m curious. How many man hours are ******* in each flock start to finish?
Not sure I’ve ever figured it out ….

Let’s see …..

Setting it up to preheat - 1hr
Setting it up after preheat 24-48hrs before chick arrival - 8hrs
Place chicks and 1st days chores - 2hrs
Chores days 2-7 - 1hr each day
Chores day 8 - 2hrs
Chores day 9-12 - 1hr
Chores day 13 - 2hrs
Chores day 14-35ish - 1hr
Chores 36-44 - 2hrs up to 5hrs depending on culls and barn condition
Chores day before loadout - 3hrs
Chores loadout day - 1hr
Clean barn day after loadout - 16hrs
2nd cleaning day - 10hrs
Level shavings before new shavings arrive - 4hrs
Level new shavings - 4hrs

I think I got 92-124hrs figuring no time for repairs or other maintenance. It works to around $26/hr plus the manure while I’m paying for the barn. Not horrid actually.

Mama Bear and the little people squad talked into a family trip to the Wisconsin Dells last week. We like to stay at an AirBnB or similar but chose to stay at the Mt Olympus hotel as parking and wristbands were the same price as the hotel room.
IMG_7072.jpeg

The kiddos had a blast on the rides. I apparently like my feet on the ground. I did this swing a times until I saw a simp pump in the base sitting in a puddle of hydraulic fluid. Seemed very sketchy lol.
IMG_7073.jpeg

Up up and around. It was okay but I went with the littles because “daddy please” works every time.
IMG_7074.jpeg

This is did not do. I rode the smallest most mild coaster and got off going “nope nope nope nope nope” so I hung back and took pictures.
IMG_7076.jpeg

This was one of the coolest places I’ve ever eaten. “The Grateful Shed” had a bunch of permanent food trucks inside.
IMG_7078.jpeg

I ordered a giant nacho basket and wasn’t disappointed.
IMG_7079.jpeg

I picked it up to see how heavy it was and there was no bottom !! Made sense but surprised me. It was delicious.
IMG_7080.jpeg

I remember my childhood vacation to the Dells mostly because of the Duck boats so we had to go check them out !!
IMG_7084.jpeg

The kiddos had a blast and said I needed one so now I’m loosely watching for one to pop up on marketplace 😂
IMG_7087.jpeg

While we were gone I got an alert from a camera about a vehicle in the yard. A buddy was dropping some wood off by the boiler. Heck yeah.

A lot of my world exists at 5mph on a comfy air ride seat. Those stupid coasters are neither of those things :lol_hitti

I told Mama Bear “I’m not scared, I just didn’t like it”. She laughed and gave me a very sassy “Okay sure hunny”.

Hello folks, it’s been a while !! We’ve acquired another “not a pet”. His name is Franklin and he’s a little brown steer.
IMG_7109.jpeg

Pops got the oats cut while we were loafing in the Dells.
IMG_7115.jpeg

It’s been popcorn fart dry here so we’ve been able to get into some meadows we haven’t for a while.
IMG_7127.jpeg

Soggy soggy soggy !! I carried a bunch of them out one at a time.
IMG_7131.jpeg

I mentioned to a neighbor that I’d have some oat straw for sale and he said he’d buy it if he could run it through his walker combine so I didn’t even have to combine it. Fantastic !!
IMG_7132.jpeg

The combine repairs continue !! This is a double cross that drives the incline auger in the grain tank. One of those “as long as we’re in here we may as well do it” sort of deals.
IMG_7135.jpeg

This plate is well worn. Time to plate it with some stainless steel !!
IMG_7139.jpeg

Welded it up and Pops smoothed it out.
IMG_7140.jpeg

That should outlast the combine now lol.

Sweet corn stand is up and running !!

Wondered how the sweet corn biz was doing a few days ago. Looks like you need to double the acreage in sweet corn next year! Dells, visit looked like a great get away and with pop and the neighbor doing the work, well......
I’m a bit behind in updates !! Sweet corn stand did very well this year !! $3,000 in revenue off 0.6 acres makes a guy think about doing quite a bit more lol.

Then Dells trip was nice. Kiddos had a good time and it was nice to get away for a bit.

Pops enjoys himself in the shop for sure !!

I FINALLY got the mill and lathe wired up and moving again !! Gonna use the lathe to make some spacers for the bin-zebo Mama Bear has been after me to build since 2020. I have a few things I’d like to do with the mill soon as well.

Time to give the critters some fresh stuff to lay on. This is an every 3-5 day event depending on weather.
IMG_7146.jpeg

I loaded the log table a while back and finally got after emptying it half way at least.
IMG_7151.jpeg

The stove pad pile is growing !! Another 5-6 cord and I think it’ll be full.
IMG_7152.jpeg

The little brown calf is settling in nicely.
IMG_7154.jpeg

And then there are these two morons. There are enough spaces for you both so why do you feel the need to be so dumb !! Had to loosen the board and lift it up and they backed out. No big deal really. Them being tasty makes it a little easier to deal with this **** :lol_hitti
IMG_7160.jpeg

The guy that hunts around here asked if he could plant some deer plot stuff. Looking through what’s in it it is a very very expensive cover crop mix lol.
IMG_7164.jpeg

He mowed while I spread.
IMG_7163.jpeg

Harrowed it all in. Just need a shot of rain now !! He showed up with a push drop spreader and a rake to do 2 acres. You deer hunters are a different breed lol.

Not often the farmer will let the hunter use their equipment too! 😂

Plus he was probably thinking of just a small plot. Easier to get the deer closer to his hunting stand if it’s a small candy field for the deer!
