I swung by the Restore the other day, as I was looking for something

mil glass light glass (which is what I was after), 3/8 Spintite (in perfect, unused condition), Orchard Park flat head driver, unknown but old and interesting socket. $2 with senior discount.

Stopped at a sale marked tool sale. Had lots of cheaper stuff. Gave $40 for this pile. First proto chisel holder I have run into.

Wandered back over to the retiring fence builder's yard sale to see what he may have pulled out since yesterday. Lots of tools! Lots of **** tools! In fact, nearly all **** tools!

I guess when you're running a fence construction company and the crews doing the work, you buy cheap 'cause it'll get lost or ruined anyway.

Yesterday's Estate Sale ended up being pretty good.

All the pliers are Bell System/SWBT marked except the little pair on the left, and all are in very good condition. First four sets are Klein, then Crescent and Utica. The Tweezers are also Bell System marked.

Top left are a Canuck Tobacco tin, a small cotter pin tube, and an empty Boy Scout first aid tin.
Bottom left are some Western Electric data plates from some phone equipment, the compass is a Dennison Birmingham British Officer's compass from WWI, and a set of tin drill bits.

Right side is pretty boring, a bunch of soldering wick, brass sheet, handle, bus blocks, some wire, and zip ties.
Some other odds and ends aren't pictured like two sets of microscope slides, a bunch of bottle openers, and some matchbooks/match covers.

In the background is a render of a Solar Aircraft Company Turbine. The neat part is that this one is from the time period that International Harvester owned Solar with the intent of producing Trucks and Tractors with turbines. Only a couple prototypes were made and it didn't catch on. Ultimately they sold the Solar Division to Caterpillar in the early 1981 when they were having cashflow issues.

Figuring, I'd head out west, where the land is rich and skies are big. Just got to fix in some provisions and the Donners and I are making for the pass. The powermaster needs new seals. Turns out I can get roll caps for the Fanners from Bass Pro Shop. Dig the Case fixed blade, looks like something I'd mount under the 1894. Can't figure out why Griswold #3 lid is so dang expensive, but if it ain't self basting, it ain't worth eatin.​

Got a call midday about a local self storage place running a sale, I expected it to be liquidation of unpaid units. Turns out they had a huge auto shop in the back and they were selling the contents plus a bunch of other stuff like a lovely old tractor and collection of fire extinguishers.
Think I'll go back tomorrow morning to scoop up some things I skipped. They had a lot more Mac and Cornwell stuff than I've seen anywhere else locally.

As for today, I filled a little box with stuff for only a crisp $10 bill. Everything's been scrubbed because it would look like a box of censor bars if I took a photo before I cleaned them, but it's still like a chalkboard is melting when you pick something up. Much cleaning to do.
Strangely, I might be most excited just to have a big ruler on hand. Fun day.

I recently discovered that I have 2 editions of the Peterson's VW book--that I bought new back in the 70s. Trying to decide if I need to keep them--every once in awhile I get a VW question and it sometimes helps to have these, and other old VW references, still on the shelf.

While out of town on other errands and appointments, I stopped at the Eau Claire Habitat store and was glad I did. Two small brass bristle brushes, a Sears made-in-England block plane, and a nice later version Stanley No 40 scrub plane with a few scuffs but most of the original japaning and varnish. $8 for it all!! There were a few other planes and a couple of spokeshaves, all of lesser quality, for more money.

Yep! At first I thought it was a light meter until I saw the name Minox. I opened it and it has film in it rolled to one side of the spool.

I went back for the well loved Workmate and a couple 3/4 drive sockets, the miscellaneous maybes, and to find anything I missed the first time around.
Seeing that hint of red and chrome while clearing out a mound of junk felt like finding a golden ticket. Just need to get a new lever for it. Somehow my first Snap-on ratchet.
Big clamp is kind of stealing the show, however.






Oh how I wish I could buy these toolboxes, but I absolutely can't haul and store them safely right now. I can dream though.



Grabbed this and left it at a buddy's place, he's been tacking stuff all over his garage again and has a real fancy bike.

Among the errand I had to run for the wife, I managed to hit two estate sales. The first was in an private airplane hanger, as a town north of me has a subdivision/private airport:

two wire brushes, fixed socket wrenches, Stanley and Xcelite drivers, pin vise/drill set, metric marked socket tray, unmarked outside calipers, flip cover tool box lock (needs the spring fixed), Snap-on G series sockets.

set of Hansen thread chasers, Eagle oiler, frictionless push-through ratchet, Williams S wrench, Duro Phillips driver, Xcelite driver, misc. sockets (Challenger, Snap-on, P&C, Hinsdale),

AN bolt gauge, Starrett level, misc. reamers, and two Mayhew punches (one excellent, one poor). $10 for all of that.

Then, early in the afternoon, I hit another sale

Proto puller parts, pin wrenches, Snap-on and Billings wrenches, Heller X-pein head, Cornwell socket, Snap-on spinner. $20

I will be going back to the first sale, as there was just so much stuff, and Sunday will be half price sale. There was a disassembled aviation rotary engine, pipe benders, bandsaws, drill presses, and so on, who knows what will be left in the end!

My ole wheelbarrow had a metal wheel once upon a time and I replaced it with a Honda 50 scooter wheel.

Love that Case @ctuai nice score!!

Never seen such a large fuller. Someone on Blade Forum says it looks a lot like a Marble's Ideal hunting knife. I guess the larger fuller makes it lighter, which it actually does if your looking for it.

I did lot of field work in that country a decade or three ago, and still enjoy going for semi-random drives through it. It's still relevant for most of the roads shown, and a much nicer scale to deal with than the current USFS maps of the same area. $1 after a little haggling.

I had never been, either--until I starting using some Phillips of that generation. They fit amazingly well on both Phillips and JIS.

Not too sure I've ever encountered a P4 screw.

A bit of a slow day considering it is the biggest GS day of the year around here usually (tomorrow is the "main event)


$5 for this vet's syringe - I'll use it for moving bigger amounts of different fuels/chemicals/solvents to smaller dispensing containers than I can with regular syringes.





Two bucks for this Church Key for my youngest daughter - It will get cleaned up and maybe painted:

I gave $2 for this aluminum, tube pole case, It was full of skewers:

I should have looked closer at the bottom of the Jacks container. Its NOT old (bar coded) and was made in China to boot...



A final Yard sale and I paid $10 for the SK box with most of the sockets and the oversize Lure.

My wife wants to do a resell booth for vintage toys so I picked her up this hardware organizer for $165 today.


When I was bidding on hardware organizer I couldn't leave this Wilton behind. I dont really know what these are actually worth (or what model this actually is) but I felt $113 was a decent deal. I passed on a Reed 204 1/2R with a bent handle for $106.

Yesterday's adventure! I won an online auction on Hibid.com for this 1974 Craftsman roller + middle box pair. I was the highest bidder at $42.50 + 15% buyers premium. I think I got it for so cheap for possibly two reasons: One of them being that most of the online auctions hosted on Hibid offer shipping, but this one did not. Meaning anyone who searched on Hibid by-event perhaps saw the 'no shipping' icon on this auction and didn't even bother to look at it. The other reason was the location; the heart of the Shenandoah Valley. I had to drive up and over the mountains to get into the valley, which had me on the windiest (as in curviest) road I have ever been on in my life. I would hate to have to pull a trailer on that road. I'll clean the boxes up good and place them beside my other grey/red roller + middle box stack. They'll be twins!




But that's not all. On the way to go get those two boxes, I stopped at a local thrift spot at the edge of my town. Sometimes they have a few tools worth buying. And yesterday was my best score from them yet.


NOS 10W Vice Grips, another pair of 10W's, PROTO cutters, a mesh filter funnel, a complete -V- Craftsman 1/4" drive tool kit, a like-new Indestro 1/4" drive deep socket set w/ caddy, and a pair of old 10" M.Klein & Son #2 splicing crimpers. $45 for the whole lot. Now back to the two Craftsman boxes for a moment: When I arrived to pick up the Craftsman boxes a couple hours later, I found that they were bolted together in 4 places. The listing online made no mention of that, so I didn't plan for it by bringing tools. But suddenly I remembered the Craftsman 1/4" tool kit I had just bought on the way there!! I legitimately HAD to use it to unbolt the two boxes haha. It was destiny! I will keep a small socket kit in my car from this day forward.

I was super stoked to find the NOS Vice Grips in their original box. The back side has 1982 printed on the bottom.

These old Klein #2 splicing crimpers feel so nice. I don't do any electrical projects, but I just had to have them. Notably marked M. Klein & SON instead of "Sons". Google tells me that "Sons" was added to the company name in 1897... Are these really that old?? They were priced at $3 dollars! Wild!



Now. Believe it or not, on the way home from the trip to Shenandoah, I stopped at a tool auction... It was hosted by Hart's Auction & Whatnot. It appears that they do a tool-specific auction once a month. And yesterday was one of them. I had never been there before, and it was actually my first time at a live, in-person auction. With a fast-talking auctioneer and everything. It went from 6pm-9pm. I bought a lot of stuff that I haven't even begun to photograph... I'll post it all here when I get to it haha. Stay tuned. What a day!

I spotted a sale yesterday on Craigslist that was very close to home. When we went to check it out I found that I was looking at Saturday’s listings on Friday. Oops! When we went back this morning there was plenty of stuff but absolutely nothing of interest. The other sale didn’t look promising but when I asked about tools, I was allowed in a room adjoining the garage with a box of old tools that had belonged to the seller’s father.
All the pliers were wrapped with a variety of tapes including some particularly disgusting disintegrating duct tape. I couldn’t find a brand on the abused monkey wrench.

We headed for the Post Office where my neighbor picked up a new intake manifold for her husband’s ‘46 CJ and I got a wartime S-K set. We drove around on a mostly unsuccessful search of TOOs. We spotted this picture worthy late 30s Ford on Tahoe Keys Blvd.
The only worthwhile TOO we found produced several oilers, some better than others.I was happy to find a ‘45 mess kit knife.
My wife grabbed a really rusty Stanley #2 Phillips to test my renovation skills. It didn’t come out too bad.
