LED strips under stair tread

Going to put in new stair stringers, risers and treads going into the basement. Thought it would be both safer and looks to have a LED strip under the 1" overhang of each tread. Never messed with these before, so how would you install a strip (10 treads) wire them together? There is a single sconce light wired to 3-way switches in the stairway that I would pick up the wiring and use to light the strips.

I've seen single leds that go in the riser which plug together that I could do, but think the strips would be better. Suggestions?

Will the stairs remain open behind them for low voltage wiring to run?

Are the stairs prebuilt or will you assemble treads, risers, stringers?

You router a groove into the bottom of the overhang for the channel and then a small groove for the power wires that runs back behind the riser. Then you can make all your connections behind the stairs.

At the day job we install LED lights in the risers of our exterior deck stairs. They are low voltage and controlled by a photoeye but can be configured to switched.

Larry, I've seen those type on Amazon, would be easy. I just don't know how much light they would give. I was hoping for these stair lights to provide all the stair would need. I could easily install 2 in each riser, which would be 22 of them.

I think that continuous led strip lighting full width under each tread would be much brighter than you need to see stairs. Will the built in stair lighting be the only light or will there still be a light fixture sconce above the stairs?

I don't have a picture of the deck stairs at night, but they are pretty bright.

I thought one of the sets I saw was dimmable too! And there are models that have the top half shielded so the light goes down, not straight out.

I have installed a number of these for customers. I've been happy with the results but they might be a bit spendy depending how many you want.

Look on YouTube for Chris Hytha. He's been rebuilding a rowhouse in Philadelphia, and just a few weeks ago included a segment in a video about adding LED strip lights on his stairs.
