I have an old R980XR with manufacture date 12/04, so not sure if that's 2012 or 2004. Anyways, I got it cheap from a mechanic that was moving and while it wasn't in perfect condition, it worked well enough to get the job done. The entire tabletop and spindle wobbled a little bit, but I worked around it and was able to mount/demount tires without scratching any wheels as long as I went carefully. Recently, one of the air lines attached to the spindle started to leak, so I figured I'd remove the top and try to fix both problems, and maybe refresh all the seals and lines while I'm in there.
So I detached the 4 jaws that appear to be the only things holding the top to the pneumatics. But the top won't come off. It's keyed instead of splined like some other models, so I didn't expect to need a puller. I've been tapping (hammering) around the the bottom of the tabletop but it doesn't seem to be moving. I forgot to measure the depth of the spindle to the tabletop before starting, so I'm not sure if it's moved and got stuck, or just never moved. Before spraying penetrating fluid in there, there was a ring of grease that made it look like it had come up a quarter to half inch. In any case, I'm stuck now and don't want to break anything. Anyone have any experience with these?
