Proto Challenger Ratchet Question

Does anyone know how to identify a single pawl Proto Challenger vs. a double pawl. I picked up a 1660 and a 1260-4 locally today at a used tool store. Only the 1260-4 is a double pawl. Never-the-less, after letting some springs fly across the room and finding them after 20 minutes or searching, both are lubed up and work well. The 1660 is MUCH, MUCH nicer than a standard Craftsman 1/2" pear head, so it earned it keep.

The reason I ask, is whenever I find these old ratchets they are dry and gritty. There is no telling what is inside. I've always passed them up previously, but now know better. I'm going to keep my eyes open for double pawl ratchets this summer and wasn't sure which model numbers were which.

Thanks,
Nicholas

Picture for anyone who may not be familiar with these. 3/8" 1260-4 is on top, 1/2" 1660 is in the middle and 1/2" Craftsman RHFT is on the bottom.

I have found most Challenger ratchets to be double pawl. They tend to be very nice ratchets. Ratchet repair kits can be tough to find for Challengers.

I got these two for like $5 a piece, and expect to find them at the flee market for less. They where pretty gritty before I cleaned and lubed them. I was really, really surprised to find that the 1660 was a single pawl.

Around here anything with the name Proto sells for more.
I picked up a 1/2 drive challenger for .50 at a swap meet. I found some rebuild kit for Challengers,at another swap for $5 ea all NOS,only had one of each drive size. I never see the kits.

I had a couple Challenger rats some time ago. Solid tools.
Can't remember if they were single or double pawl, tho. Have to check my pic database.

What happened to them?

I'm thinking -3's and -4's may be double paws, the ones without the suffixes may be single pawl. I don't have the Stanley made -D one with the thunbweel, but I read that it is double pawl. I'm not exactly sure...I'll see what shows up this summer.

I traded them a few years ago.
As I recall, these two that are pictured were double see-saw pawls. So, perhaps your assumption is correct.

The second on the right looks like a 1060D. Should be a very nice ratchet. I'd clean and lube it up. I bet the other two pear heads are crude in comparison, although the Snap-on is worth a lot more because of demand. I had a flex head Snap-on just like that, sold it because I couldn't stand using it. I finally got a full set of Craftsman RHFT ratchets and really like them.
