Think My Grandmother had one when I was little.

Thanks for solving that mystery guys. I never would have guessed that for the original use. I had always assumed some sort of household appliance but a "roaster". They definitely made the two pieces to fit perfectly together. At least I know what to call it now.

Oh, I'm old enough and generally thought to be full of the other stuff. Just never grew up with one like that. My mom always used a roster pan in her oven and never owned an electric version. Actually now that I see them put together I realize my MIL has the electric roaster but I've never seen her have the bottom base for it. I'll have to see if her roaster matches to this base next time I'm visiting.

Yeah, I forgot about those till I saw yours.
I think she still had here in the basement, but it's gone now.
Must have been around 1957 till 1961 I remember it from the first house.

hey all, a guy came by the house to purchase a box i had online. he showed me a pic of a box he had and wondered if i knew it's maker. the thing that's a little different is the drawers look to slide on "v" shaped grooves? does anybody have an idea who might have had that design? thanks for your input.

CF: your new (old) toolbox has that 1920's look to it like a Plvmb, Blackhawk and other box built like a tank. first time i've seen that style of drawer slides so wondering if it's homemade. did you post on the bigger VINTAGE TOOLBOX thread and see if anybody that checks that thread regularly might know more?

Faded: as Nines said your 6 drawer design might be the first one i've seen. my Lyon flat files have the same drawer pulls, but i don't see any name tag on yours. is there any name on it or inside the drawers? i bet it's pretty heavy isn't it and did you move it without the drawers and are the drawers on wheels or just slides?

i have a Fein with a blade that isn't sharp but it's sort of like a power razor blade would that maybe work best?

No idea which one I bought. I just use an air grinder from HF to run it though. Mine is just the short hand held one.

Drives, Are you wanting to take the tape off without buggering up the paint? If so you need to stay with chemical solutions. Have you tried something basic like goof off?

Lighter fluid is another option. (Camp fuel is the same stuff, AKA Naphtha - 7-8 bucks a gallon for crown at Walmart.)

It will need to soak a bit, so paper towel wet down on top of the tape?

SB: thanks and i'll see what i can figure out. thank you for the suggestion cause i'd never heard of that wheel and had to GOOGLE it to see what it is.

TOM: yep there are still a few metal badges or credit cards still in the cabinets. only 400 drawers and you wouldn't believe how heavy these cabinets are even empty cause i took all the drawers out to clean them. i might have to sell one cause might only have room for 2. I'm guessing empty AddressOGraph cabinet that is 38.75 wide, 23.5 deep and i think 65 inches tall might weigh close to 400-500 pounds. i might be as heavy as this old Lyon cabinet i used to have 2500-3000 of weight plates on each shelf that now keeps a few old vises safe.

Outlaw: yep the paint (maybe BATTLESHIP GREY) is actually in pretty good shape and it's been sitting in the back of a woodworking shop for maybe the last 50 or so years. thanks for the tips and i have a bottle of GOOF OFF, but thinking it will not work great or make a helluva mess.

ALL: i'll keep you posted. i got a few pieces of old masking tape off the outside of the cabinet so far with a razor blade and i had to be very careful not to take any paint off. i'll keep you all posted on my progress and if anybody else has an idea please post it up. thanks in advance!!

No issue with the paint, check out this video. Probably one of the best tools I have ever bought.

SB: thanks for the YOUTUBE video. the one after that or maybe it was 2 after that had some nice wide tape to use that the guy removing the pin stripe should have used. when removing the pin stripe it almost looks like the pinstripe's leftovers might be as hard to remove as the pin stripe.

interesting i can just pick up the wheel at Home Depot for maybe $10 (3M eraser wheel) and maybe get this done. i wonder if they might make a bench grinder wheel that i can just put on my buffer to do all the drawer fronts. even though all of the 400 don't have old tape on them a lot of them do and this is almost a massive cleanup project for an old guy like me.

The paint is just a little more faded than the paint on my stack.

There is a flaw in the red paint they used on Powr-Kraft boxes. The red turns orange over time with exposure to UV light. These are still pretty red. I figure that they were in a basement.

ECO: i'm guessing the new boxes are 12x12 or close to that size? and does each drawer have dividers in them or are they open. nice find and hell you don't even have to paint them cause they match your other boxes.

Drives, if it is masking tape you need to remove, Ronsonal lighter fluid is what I always used on book covers when that was my business. It softens it up, then you can either lift it straight off, or if really stuck on use a plastic scraper.

BMW & Outlaw: thanks for the tips on the lighter fluid/Naphtha/camp-fuel (All the same stuff). i just moved 2 of the 133 drawer units into my 9x15 portion of our 2 car garage at home and just moving these cabinets with the drawers out by myself isn't an easy thing let me tell you.

also since all the drawers were full of sawdust i had to vacuum all of them after vacuuming the empty cabinet. they still need a wipe down with damp paper towels before i start putting my STUFF in the.

yep Drivesitfar's Home Hardware store might one day be ORGANIZED so i can actually find a nut, bolt, screw or part that i own so i'll never have to run to the hardware store for something in the middle of a project.

removing tape and labeling will be a long process so stay tuned.

I bought these four 5-drawer flat files about a year ago. I finally cleaned up the garage a bit and built a counter top from 3/4" pine to give me a surface where small parts won't fall between the cabinets. I'm in the process of organising the drawers with the HF foam fatigue mats. Slow going but I'll have no issue finding my tools at a glance once I'm done.

REESE: great job making those flat files a workbench. i really like the foam flooring you used for the drawers and i might have a pile of it somewhere cause some guys used to give it to me when i'd buy their gyms. how did you mark and cut it for the tools? it looks like you used brand new ones. yes?

since i own more than a few of these thanks for showing yours with a plywood top and the drawer liners with your tools in them.

ALL: a while back i posted a Rotobin that i almost passed on cause it was so big. well i set it up today by myself and i'm so sore i'm heading to the inversion table after i finish lunch. OMG putting 4.5 foot bins over your head onto a pole when they weigh 80+ pounds is a new exercise i didn't think i would survive, but I managed to finish it and I LOVE THE ROTOBIN. i've put about 100 pounds of 1 inch all thread and other big bolts in 4 of the 10 bottom bin's sections that might weigh 300-400 pounds and the bin rotates like it did when it was empty. speaking of flat files/map cabinets i picked up this wood one last night that is the same size as 2 metal Mayline flat file cabinets i already own and i just finished setting them on top of the wood one.

DRIVES, I really like my Maylines. The hardest part is dealing wth the 2" depth but it's not that bad.

As for the foam, I'm not really concerned about having 100% accurate cutouts, so what I've been doing is laying the tools out on the smooth side of the mat in a mirror image of what i want and tracing around them with a marker. I then cut the shape out and make small adjustment cuts as needed for a better fit. So far that has worked out great.

I was unsure at first about keeping these cabinets because I was afraid that the 36" depth would be too much. As it turns out, it's nearly perfect because I can have my power strip, computer, parts bins, etc towards the back and I still have plenty of room as a workspace. I can reach the power tools hung on the wall just fine as well.

I got all of these upper cabinets for $100. I screwed them all together and hung them with the help of a friend. They hold various items that I don't need to access as often, which works great with the deeper work bench.

ALL: Mayline is one of my favorite flat file makers along with Hamilton and Lyon. Safeco is built pretty decent too, but just doesn't have the look and not quite the quality of the other maker's products, but they are not far behind.

Interestingly enough, none of the cabinets have markings that I can find.

I have three, actually. I used to have 5 but decided to give two to a friend once I decided to make my workbench.

The slightly taller one is 36W x 17D x 66H. It has fixed cabinets, but the cabinet faces swing up and in.

The second one is 36W x 18D x 64H. The top drawer has a swing up and in face AND that entire cabinet slides out. The remaining four are standard pull out drawers.

The third is 42W x 18D x 64H. Each of the five drawers have the swing up and in faces and each drawer pulls out to access the contents.

I currently have a range of things in them. The taller cabinet primarily contains chemicals and the like (automotive fluids, paint, car cleaning products.). The middle one has a range of things from heavy gauge wire to power tools to electronic project bits. The widest one has the heaviest items. It has driveshafts, exhaust manifolds, flywheels, clutches, etc.

So far, no issues with any of it. While they may not work for everyone, they do well by me. I also like the fact that I can close the drawers for a much cleaner appearance in teh garage.

As for parking, my wife is ECSTATIC that I offered her my parking space in the garage. She has never parked any of her cars in a garage, so that gained me extra brownie points. LOL. My 2005 Yamaha V-Max also parking in here. Once the extra car parts from a recently sold project car go away, it will be pretty nice in here!

Mark: I know you are space limited like I am, but i've had a similar cabinet like that and it's a beast. it probably could easily double as a work bench or a stand for a drill press or maybe even a mill.

thanks for posting it and with a picture cause as we all should know that the craigslist ads are useless when expired or pulled cause you can't get a picture or any information from old ads.
