Hi
I have to show you a garage that I have been wanting to build for a long time. We even looked at moving to have this built. But I have just put in too much time, sweat and cash into our home that we raised the kids in. I will only start with some of the plans that went into this endeavour. I will add pics as I have time. At the moment the structure is up and now stucco, windows and doors are the next step. I did however run the tubing and insulation needed for in floor heat in the slab.
If anyone has suggestions about heating, electrical, paving stone driveway or even my future lift, I would appreciate it.
Hope you enjoy and check back from time to time to see the progress made and give me your ideas as we go.

Here are a few pics of the landscaping that had to be removed. The one pic is of my buddy who by the time I got my phone to take his pic had topped the tree. Thanks Kev hope you enjoy your pic on the net.

Oldsmobile is better. Lol.

I do love certain firebirds though. Last year ws6 ram air is one of my favorite cars. It just looks so aggressive from the front. I really like the modern gto too with its subtle looks and good performance.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

Hi Stuart, I'm a bit further in my build than I can address with pics at this time. I'm using glass block on each side and between the garage doors. Probably will stucco with a slightly slanted torch on roof. Instead of a low slope peak application hid behind the facade made up from tin or asphalt.
What I really wanted to do as an awning above my garage doors was to use Pontiac hoods. I was going to find 4 matching hoods, 2 for each door. I wanted the distinctive V point on the hood then cut the front 2+ feet off and splice them together. I then was going to cut Pontiac emblems, logos etc into them, for light to shine out from the inside. I have a buddy who is a CNC specialist who would have been invaluable.
Only problem is the city permit people where I would have had a lot of hoops to jump through. So decided to use an awning over the doors which will be tiled in ceramic wave tile roofing, SW style. But I was able to locate those old green porcelain drop down lights. They were out of a building from 1954 and were in like brand new condition. These will hang over the 4 glass block windows. Will trim or cap with a white tin. So more Texaco Art Deco than a Pontiac flavour. I will figure something out for the inside. So am looking for related items for the inside.

Here are the lights I found on Kijiji. They were out of a Ontario Liquor warehouse near Barrie Ontario. They were originally installed in 1954 and still had the protective film covering.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

I've seen photos of car hoods used for awnings, it's a neat look - too bad it turned out to not be an option. Maybe you can just hang some hoods on the walls inside, or maybe make a desk out of one or something - for example, I use the rear window out of a '61 Catalina sedan for a coffee table. :) I do like the porcelain lights.

The Olds might be my second pick. You seem to like the newer units. I would first choice would be a 1965-1967 GTO, then a pre 1970 Firechicken. Of course it would have to be a rag top. Or maybe even an early 70s 442.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

It has been awhile since I have added any pics. At this point I’m still clearing the back yard for my garage. Will add pics in the near future. Thanks for looking.

The first couple of pics are loading out the trees. After cutting these out and hauling them out I was pretty well finished that day. Our dump site doesn’t allow to use the hoist on the trailer. You have to manually unload. WTH!! Something about the site being limited in size. I can tell you I could have backed in deeper and using the hoist and would have likely taken up less space than I did manually unloading.
The remainder of pics are the yard where the garage will be located and my buddies bobcat in action.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

I’ll add some more pics. The fellow in the brown overalls was a great find for a carpenter. He worked for a major commercial builder where I live. Actually he is a neighbour and finally went out on his own. My BIL is a school mate of his dad. He wanted to do the build as it is more of a commercial building than a standard garage. I also make sure that there is a beer around at the end of the day:beer:. He was so busy during our wet October and thought we could at least get the base in place before the winter hit. So these pics are peeling out overburden and setting up for the thickened edge pad. Since we have no back lanes I had to cut a second rear door into my single attached. The rear door was completed the year before. Sorry about some pics being on their side but you get the idea.

What are the boards for if this is a thickened edge slab build? They look like stem wall forms, sorta.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

Yes Rogue it is a thickened edge. Since the garage was over 500 sq.ft. I had to have an engineer draw up the specs. It was either drill piles or thickened edge. My carpenter buddy said the TE was more than adequate. If under 500 sq.ft. I could have poured a standard slab. We poured Nov 3rd which is damn near unheard of in the residential market where I live. But the cool temps did give me a fantastic pour.
The timber is simply the outside edge of the forms.
Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. I better bring this project up to date.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

Your right JC I should be updating this more often. These pics are mostly of the rebar for the thickened edge pad. I did include a drainage sump pit, but with the season rapidly drawing to a close I didn’t allow time to pipe it out of the building. But if it were to fill with water and freeze it would have left me with a bigger problem of burst pipes and drainage under the slab. So if it does fill I will have to hand bomb the water. This garage will have limited drive in and out traffic anyway. If I go with infloor heating evaporation will likely take care of any water problems anyway.

One Q. If you are putting in a lift, do you have a couple spots picked where the radiant tubing gives a wide berth and a large island where the floor is very thick?

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

Hi Kay
Nice of you to drop by. I may put a four post lift in but undecided at this point. I wish I would of come to the world of GJ earlier as I would have likely done things a little different. For one an area with no tubing and slightly thicker would have been a good idea. The local jurisdiction says I was allowed a total of 13' for the peak height of my garage. With the trusses and 8" of styro I am left with basically a 10' ceiling. Usable for a lift but I certainly won't be standing underneath it. I still may install one, especially if I heat the garage as I have had requests to store a vehicle in a heated area for the winter. I have found some guys will pay fairly well to store their car in a heated space for the winter. Which would help defray the cost of the lift and installation of a heating source.

I just saw an old Pontiac sign on a dealer building Saturday. I thought about stopping to try to buy it but I already have too much stuff.
What city are you in?
I spent my first 47 in Saskatchewan and used to have a 71 GTO.

Sureshot you should buy that sign and come to Toon Town for a visit.
The 71 would be on my list but would really like a 65 GTO ragtop. But who wouldn’t?
Where about did you spend those 47 years?

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

I lived in Estevan but worked all over western Canada. I flew in and out of Toon town last week while up that way visiting friends in the PA area. I've got a few relatives in Toon. My niece works at Birminghams and I'm not sure of the others.
Do you know of the nat gas storage caverns east of the city?
I did a bunch of downhole work on them back in the day.
I sold some GTO stuff to a guy from PA a few years back but can't recall his name. I believe he had a collection of stuff.

I will take a pic of the sign if I bet that way in daylight hours. Better yet I googled it and if you google Fairview Ok Jensens there are some great images. That thing is sweeter than I imagined at night, Maybe I should be taking a ladder with me next time LMAO.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

I figured you might be an O&G guy. Haven’t been to Birmingham’s as of yet, but will put it on our radar, always looking to try somewhere new for a meal.
You are likely talking about the gas cavern near Prud’homme, I have driven by but have no idea what is under ground. The storage in Sask is pretty amazing a buddy of mine now retired worked for Sask Energy. He was pretty impressed with the capability of the caverns.
I hope the guy from PA still has the GTO you should follow up with him.
I checked out Jensen’s in OK pretty impressive:bowdown: would be amazing to see at night with all the neon glowing. A little Las Vegas right in Fairview. Last year we drove through OK City, Tulsa and Vinita so we were pretty close.
If ever in Toon let me know we could always head over to Birmingham’s for a refreshment.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

I will have to look you up next time.
There are multiple caverns at Prudhomme, Moosomin, and a bunch by Regina. If you go west of Regina on Dewdney, south of town, or on 33S toward Stoughton all those huts you see and the propane cars are all at cavern facilities. The ones by Regina are a mile to the top and about 300' tall by 300' wide and hold about 800k barrels. It is some very interesting work to "build" them as well as the remedial work and inventory stuff.
If you get back this way look me up. I just moved here in August from Rapid City, SD but have been working down here since February.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

Earlier in this thread I showed a few pics of some 1954 Porcelain lights I purchased on Kijiji out of Barrie Ontario. The bases had some paint on some and maybe a little mastic mixed in. Since our weather is fairly mild around freezing I thought I would look at hanging them.
I likely thought I would strip them up but decided to maybe give them a little extra logvin and shine them up a bit. I PM’ed RivennHewn of GJ Table build fame. He gave me a suggestion of
https://dieselfreak.com/product/alumaclear-aluminum-clear-coat/
Or some wheel clear coat sprays after the cleanup.
I would be open to other suggestions but the wheel sprays would be a great idea. The dieselfreak maybe a little tough to source in the next couple of days.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

Yes BajaScout you are right I am way behind n the actual build thread. I’ll try to pick the pace up a bit. The next phase was putting down the concrete this was 2 years ago

I was actually a little shocked we got this far as in early October I was thinking of waiting till next year and I told my carpenter this he was a little relieved as he had to many commitments. And I didn’t want to chance a poor pour. It was always raining and my back yard needed to be tore up for the future structure. The pics show the cement being pumped on November 2nd or 3rd which is pretty unbelievable in my area as the cold could set in at anytime.

The pump truck showed up at 7:30 AM and as gone by 9:30. Being a residential area many folks had not seen this type of operation before. Should have had the neighbour kids set up a lemonade/coffee stand the would have done great.

I will try and find some pics of the poor beggar trying to power trowel the top.
He was here till 9:30PM trying to do his thing. I had set up lights for him but in the end he did an unbelievable job on the top cap.

I set up some lights and he just kept at it till he had it mastered. He was back the next day to do the expansion cuts. He left a well done job, it was great.

Re: Pontiac Art Deco Texaco Garage Build

did you pressurize your pipe during the pour?
It all happened pretty quick that morning, but there was a pressure gauge on it when the pour was completed. So yes, and the pressure was maintained to at least a week later when they took the gauges off.

Menifee I will try to update the site a little quicker than I have been to date. You have been on GJ for awhile what have you been up to. Speed shop does get my interest up.:lol_hitti
