This wrench kept showing up on ebay with no interest so being the sucker I am for underdogs and misfits I went for it. Nothing comes up on Google other than additional ebay listings and a hole punch. The MFD looks like a Proto stamp, but that could be generic. Any ideas?

Thanks,
John

Way to rescue the orphan. I have nothing much to add, other than I’ve seen their wrenches here and there in my travels. Agreed, that particular one looks like something of the Proto family.

After reading BlueBomber's DBE thread months ago I was scouring ebay and any potential source for a while and this one refused to disappear. For $5.99 shipped the force was just too great. :eyecrazy:

I googled it and looks like there's a tool company still operating with that name, though they're offshore. Apparently one of those obscure names that pop up from time to time. It is reminiscent of a Proto style, but a number of mfrs have used that 'racetrack' profile handle before and the MFD moniker.

Trouble with all of these from a collector's point of view is two-fold:

They're so rare that the chances of ever piecing together a complete set is slim to none;

They're so obscure that they have no collector interest. Collectors want items they can be proud of and carry some bragging rights.

Collector #1: "I have a complete set of ROCO wrenches."
Collector #2: "So what?"

It's the old adage that just because it's rare doesn't mean it's worth anything.

The OP definitely gave that seller a mercy shot. At $5.99 delivered, he probably ended up netting a whole $1.87 off it. Wasn't worth the time to even shoot the pics and write up the listing. Around here that's donationware (Salvation Army). Interesting find nonetheless--it may be a good user.

Thanks to all and a valid observation by DadsTools. Fortunately I'm not a collector in the sense of having complete sets, more a complete range of misfit wrenches. Trouble is, I've gathered enough versions of each that I try to grab a different wrench each time I need a particular size until I've cycled through them and then start over. Not sure of the clinical definition for that, but it's probably not good. This one will be in the user rotation at any rate.

Thanks again,
John

Don't know what the clinical term for that is either, but it's rather benign when talking about tools. Medically, a mental state is only considered a 'disease' or a 'disorder' or 'condition' or 'syndrome' or 'addiction' when it has adverse life-altering consequences. Some guys do this with women--now that could have life-altering consequences. OCD is only a disorder when it adversely affects one's life, otherwise it's completely harmless. And I'm sure it's not an addiction because you can stop this anytime you want. Right?:dunno:;)

I must confess that, not being that much of a collector myself, I tend to look at all vintage items regardless to the type in relation to monetary value. I find the excitement in the find, but then need to pass them on to someone else and make some money for my efforts. Yes, I have a very small collection of tools and fishing tackle that are of a historical interest to me personally, some having very little monetary value in collectors' circles. But beyond that, to simply keep buying things without the intent to resell them just because they're old or odd drifts into the "H" word, at least for me. If you watch cable TV, there's a number of programs illustrating the results of such habits. I also concern myself with my wife who is 11 years younger than I as to what she would be confronted with if I passed leaving her with a hoard she knows nothing about. So I have fun getting them, take a moment to delight in what I found, then move them along. Just sayin'.

I like that you mentioned about your mish-mash user sets. I have found value in putting together mixed-brand sets of USA wrenches to sell cheap for a backup set, a starter set or perhaps to have a spare in the truck or the barn. I find that these oddballs have more value together than trying to piece them out individually.

Anyway, hope someone in here has more info on your ROCO wrench.

I turned up this grouping of DBEs, Roco Alloy, the other day in a tub of randoms. Don't see much activity on the brand. Seems comments in this thread lean to Proto family production, which I agree with as my first instinct, but wondering if the company ever fell under the sway of Pendleton, or was simply contracted out to them by Roco as an independent Brand. Just for a lark, googling “roco alloy” found nothing useful, but “roco tools” found something in
Braby's Commercial Directory of Southern Africa
Volume 1, 1994

Good Luck reading it, very pixelated in Snippet View

In the books search results, it looked like this.
ROCO TOOLS CC 11 Fransen St Chamdor

That location shows up as
SAB CHAMDOR DEPOT (AB-INBEV) which I think is South African Brewery, part of the Anhueser Busch network.

But seriously, no different than this bit of research by @Debcrow , just adding another data point.
