Rough Cut Walls

Today for work a Vendor came in and took my department out for lunch. It was my turn to pick so I went with Famous Dave's. I always enjoy looking at their vintage wall memorabilia(the waitresses aren't bad either). Today I noticed the walls, they have everything covered in what looks to be rough cut Douglas Fir. I was wondering if anybody has used this in there garage? The closet I can think of is Nimrod's Garage.

If anybody has rough cut lumber as their wall covering of choice, I'd like to see some pictures.

I'm going to wait for some pictures too, as I am considering the same instead of OSB.
One thing I'm wondering is will the spaces between all of the boards allow more cold to get through? I plan on insulating, but still wondering if i will lose some efficiency with rough cut vs. osb?

Sounds like a floor to ceiling dirt trap to me.

I would agree.

I don't like rough wall finishes anywhere, in the house or in the garage.
Many of the popular textured ceilings used today just end up being dirt traps and once they get dirty, they never look really good again.

When I grew up many years ago, our old farm barns were done up with that kind of rough wood, and it was permanently dirty.

A nice rustic look can be achieved by using knotty pine and finishing it to a good (easy to clean) gloss with varnish.

I like it, if its a real oily handed mans garage actually used for working in rather than the shiny gin palace type of garage we often see (no offence meant to the shiny gin palace garage owners) where exotic machinery lives a pampered life. You could always back it with some thinner OSB to stop any gaps or even better get it machined with a tongue and groove so it slots together. Mind you, Nimrods garage is just my idea of man heaven.

My little woodshed in France is clad in rough sawn timber, looks great to my eye and I could happily live with it inside a garage. My only issue would be that I would want an area lined with something fireproof for welding and grinding.

a link to Nimrod's garage for those who have not seen: http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3740

I'm attaching a pic I found on here a while ago and saved that shows a good example of the rustic look I think you and I are going for.

Why that is my garage. The wood in the pic is about 150 years old. There are some other areas in the same space that I covered with rough sawn ship lap pine boards. My suggestion to anyone who uses this stuff is the just put it up and not worry about it. Sure it can attract dust but in this pic you see 150 years of dust and it looks good. It all depends upon the look that you are trying to achieve. More more pics of this garage check out www.stricht8garage.shutterfly.com

Stricht8 - That's the look I like! I have a pole barn out in the country that I plan on doing work in. I don't want my garage to look like a new vehicle show room in someone's mansion.

I plan on having tools & parts all over the place

edit: I really like the geobarns too!

6th gear, I hear you about the "showroom" look. I don't particularly care for it either but there are some exceptions of course. I don't like the overdone vintage look where people put irrelevant things like antique barber chairs and the like in their garages. It just starts to get hokey.
