I couldn't find anything the Code Book for 48" ceiling joist spacing...24" is the maximum allowed. Personally I would nail 2x4's 16" O.C. perpendicular to the ceiling joists...2 16d nails per joist connection. 1/2" rock right over that. If there is a living space above you should use 5/8" fire...

Exactly. All the stuff I hardly use goes up there and I hide christmas presents up there as well.

I finally get to finish off my own garage after 28+ years in business. Powder-coated RedLine cabinets made the place look great.
