Brick Patio - Gravel Bed Question

Hi. I got the garage built, so now I'm indebted to my wife to finish the back yard. I have 280 square foot of brick to lay. I'm planning a 2" bed of gravel under a 2" layer of sand for a bed. My old source of 3/8 gravel has gone away. Is 1/2 inch and under gravel too big for the job, or just...

    Storage on 2-Post Lift?

I remember seeing something that said not to store a car on a 2-post lift. If it can hold a car for work, I'm not sure why not for storage. Is this a real thing, or did I imagine it? Thanks, Kevin

Bad Stringer - Looking for Shim Advice

I have a stair problem. The stringers aren't right. The top step needs 1 7/16 of shim to sit the right height, and each step down needs gradually less until the bottom only needs 1/16 inch. At the bottom, I'll use hobby plywood for shims. At the top for the thick ones, is there a standard way...

    Thin, Inexpensive Oak Floor?

Hi. I want an oak floor stained really dark. I can't afford $5 per square foot for typical pre-finished flooring. It's really tight, so I'm looking $1.50/sft and under. I'll retreat to vinyl roll if forced. I have a thick 1-1/8 sub-floor, so I don't need thick material for strength. 1/4" oak...

    Inexpensive Plastics For Thermal Break?

Hey All. I've read several things here on thermal breaks. I'd like to get R-5 or better between my slab and the apron when it's poured. I'd love to use a sturdy plastic so I don't need foam with some type of armor cover. Is there anything you guys know that fits the bill? I've struck out so...

Slab Thickness Over 2" 25psi Insulation?

I'm preparing to do a new garage and my plan was to put R10 of foam insulation under the floor. I'd like to do radiant heat under a 12 x 12 shop area in one corner. The 60 psi Foamular 600 listed on Menards' site here (Wichita, KS) is not available right now according to two stores. Same for...

Building 30 x 36 Garage and Shop Space

I've been following Garage Journal a while, but this is my first real post. We've been saving up to now, and it's time to build a nice garage at our 1925 airplane bungalow. The house has a little 12 x 18 garage from 1925. It's served us so far, but we want to park 2 daily cars and I want to...
