    Any antique tool experts here?

I picked up this cart this afternoon knowing that they often fetch a good return. I'm going to get it ready for resale and was hoping that there are some here that know about these sorts of tools and how to retain their value. From what I understand, the last thing that I want to do is strip it...

Little tool for torch cutting circles

I posted about a build that I'm doing and some people thought this was a neat trick. In the days of CNC and Plasma CNC, there are still some old tricks that not everyone has heard of. If this helps anyone, great. Many many years ago, I built this simple little piece that has worked nicely for...

Leaving 3 phase transformer powered with only 2 wires hot. Okay or not?

I have some equipment hooked up that's 3P and I use a roto-phase to make the extra leg. They are also 575V (Canada) and the power is bumped up from 230V with a transformer after the roto-phase. I'd like to be able to leave the transformer powered up but the phase converter off since they are in...

Any VFD experts to help with V/Hz challenge?

I'm having a tough time trying to figure out the setup of a J1000 VFD that I have on my drill press. It's a pretty basic setup where I want to have a pot provide me with a range from 3Hz to 150Hz and have good torque at the lower RPMs and full power at the higher RPMs. I've tried to use the...

    A Watts linkage alternative

Many years ago I built a pickup truck into a Pro Street version. I wanted a 4 Link at the time but couldn't manage the cost at the time so I picked up a pair of Competition Engineering ladder bars and built the rest of the suspension myself. Part of what I wanted was Koni coilovers as well and...

    Show us your VFD conversions/installations

I'm a pretty techie person and love this stuff. I have worked with VFDs in my customers machines for many years but never took the time to understand them enough to do my own installs. For some reason, I thought that they were a lot more involved in the configuration aspect. Now that I have dug...

A quick way to prep fittings for soldering

I've had to do quite a bit of fitting cleaning in my days and I'm always looking for some way to do things better and faster. So, if you have a few fittings to do and ******* as well, this is a trick for prepping them prior to soldering. Get some fitting brushes and cut off the handles with a...

Any Rockwell belt sander experts out there

I have a Rockwell belt sander that is probably next on my restore list and I was hoping that someone here might know a bit about them. I was wondering what the original HP was. It has a 1/2HP motor on it and it often feels kind of weak. I have a new (although a bit weathered looking) TEFC 1HP...

Should I put an old stove/oven in my shop?

I have a nicely set up shop and I'm wondering if I should put an old stove/oven in it. I know that there are some nice uses for it such as tempering, paint curing, powder coating, etc. but I have done okay without it for so long. It's also going to take up a big chunk of space. Was it worth it...

First Milling machine right side bearing bracket power feed

I have a First mill that I bought and it had a power feed unit on it. When I got it though, the power feed was removed and the remaining bracket and gear were left on it. There is no bearing in this end and it is usable but moves around a bit. I'm hoping that someone has a bearing bracket...

The early bird gets the height gauges

I was browsing the Kijiji tools section this morning and found a deal that I couldn't pass up. A guy had four height gauges, all Mitutoyo for $150. It was first come, first served, so I zipped over there and was the first. Not sure if they work and they're missing the scriber attachment. I think...

Colchester lathe oilers - anyone know where to get replacements?

I have an older Colchester lathe and have cleaned it up. The oilers are damaged or not present and I'm hoping to find replacements. Does anybody know where to get them? Or even what they're called?:dunno:

Getting a disc sander disc to stick on - How do you do it?

I have a disc/belt sander combo and I can't seem to get the discs to stay stuck to the steel plate. I have tried cleaning it with really good solvents so I know it isn't grease. I have tried a few different brands of discs as well. Should I put some contact adhesive on the disc first? Is the...

100 year old shop walls with stonework. Need some advise.

I am putting together a shop in an old century barn http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=283881 and right now, the walls are old stone with mortar. I was thinking of leaving them like that but have some concerns. The walls are in fairly good shape right now but there are some...

Is an underground junction box possible here???

I am building my shop and electrical is one of the next things on my todo list. Money is tight so I am thinking about something. On our property, we have a main house as well as a guest house (which we used to rent out) at the back of the property. There is one meter and two feeds at the main...

Water pipes thinning and pin holes

I know it has been discussed a bit here but the details didn't really match what I am dealing with so I am hoping for some help. My house has started to develop pin holes in the copper pipe near the pump in the basement. The place was redone about 30 years ago and is in the country with a...

I thought I got a good deal on Tuesday and then today happened

I was pleased with a laser level that I got on Tuesday off of Kijiji. The seller told me it was never used and it looks like it. He says that new, it would have been over $1,000 (Canadian) and I got it for $200. I needed one badly so I was very happy. Today, I went out to pick up a Simplex jack...

Any tips on fixing a pendant?

I have a very good friend that has a pendant that she is very attached to for many years and it broke. It appears to be some sort of pot metal but I don't know for sure as I have very little experience with this stuff. Is there a way that I can fix this?

Need help on how to bend 3/4" HR MS rod

I need to bend 8 pieces of HR 3/4" hot rolled mild steel round rod into the shape in the image. I don't have a strong enough back (injury) to do it cold so I am considering making a little forge oven with some fire brick and propane torch. Any other thoughts on how I can do it? They are 36" long.
