    Texas Ramp Project

I joined a group recently that builds wheelchair ramps for low income clients at no cost. The team consists of retired Christian men that are willing to do manual labor, design, project management, etc. Funded by donations and some charitable connections like United Way. Today was my 3rd...

    New adjustable wrenches

I've been fighting old, wore out, and just cheap **** adjustable wrenches for awhile, so off to Harry Epstein website. On the closeout page they have Cresent USA made in 6, 8, 10, and 15 inch sizes. They just came in and they feel great. Of course, I ended up with some other odds and ends too.

    Door bearings

The dog started finding little steel balls on the floor. I finally discovered they were coming from the front door hinge. The doors weigh 300# or more and the hinges are welded on. I lifted the door off the hinge and measured the thrust bearing. The nylon cage was gone, hence the loose...

    Fixed it

I had been noticing for awhile that we had an LED lamp that flickered or dimmed occasionally. Then I noticed it seemed to correlate to a change in frequency of the ice maker compressor noise. I started looking for it today. I pulled the front off our main panel (20 year old Square D). I...

    Waterfurnace issue

WaterFurnace International Case #782653. Waterfurnace is selling Series 7 systems with a fatal flaw and they acknowledge it. The programmable expansion valve control no longer works. It only opens about 30% of the requested value, crippling system performance in both heating and cooling modes...

    Replacing the glass today

We are having 38 IGUs replaced today. A few were fogging, all of them are 20 years old, and the wife wanted the internal grids gone. It really opens up the house, modernizes it, and new glass is much clearer than 20 year old glass. Added Low E as well.

    From my granddad

My granddad ran a country store and service station for over 60 years starting in the early 1920's. I found this today out in my shop. He must have received it sometime in the 1930's from the vintage cars and trucks. It is cast iron and weighs ton. I still have his nickel plated brass...

    Testing for ground faults

We are a small private lake community. Most of the homes are 25-50 years old or older. This area has never had codes or inspections. The lake is owned as common property and our association is liable. The docks are privately built and owned but are on association property. We want to start...

    Irrigation pump sucking air

I went out yesterday to check sprinkler heads and found my irrigation pumps (from the lake) were sucking air and wouldn't hold prime. This system is 20 years old and I inherited it with the house. I rebuilt the pumps a couple years ago. The suction line is buried and goes across and down to...

    Harbor Freight 2000# hoist issue

My hoist has developed an issue. It has gotten progressively worse lately. At any position it will refuse to go up or down. The motor makes a loud ratcheting sound. I'm pretty sure the load brake isn't releasing. Anybody been in one of these?

    Boston HVAC replacement

My daughter just told me the AC in her condo went out. She's in Boston south end. Supposedly the compressor is shot. Got an estimate of $26k. That includes a crane lift and street blocking. The Condo is ground floor and 800sf. I guess the unit is rooftop. Even with a crane that sounds...

    Cleaned the pump sprayers

Took the time today to clean all the pump sprayers, dump last years chemicals, hot soapy water through all the wands and hoses, cleaned clogged nozzles, lubed sticky triggers with silicone grease. Ready for another year. Labeled them all as clean as well.

    Kubota Z122r hydraulic system

Checking to see if anyone has been into this hydraulic system. There is no obvious tank, fill port, filter, etc. Manual doesn't indicate that the hydraulic oil should be serviced at all.

    Geothermal install completion tomorrow

I should have my Waterfurnace geo install completed tomorrow. It took about 3 months to get the unit, a 5 ton series 7, 43.5 EER and 5.1 COP. I'm replacing two older heat pumps with propane backup, a 3 ton and a 2 ton. My 3 ton died in August and the other one is older. We are going to 3...

AC unit decided to die last night

About 8:00 last night I noticed to house felt warmer than usual. Looked and it was up to 76 instead of 72 it was set on. Checked outside and the compressor was off. Got up this morning and pulled the inspection panel. Both capacitors tested bad. The dual run capacitor was oil canned...

    Millers Falls boring machine

One of my sidelines is restoring old boring machines for the timber frame community. I just finished this one. I made new shafts, chuck, chuck key, leg set, handles, and base. Runs like a brand new one now. You can see the wear on one of the old shafts from 100+ years of use.
