The vent is called a studor vent and allows the retrofit or addition of a vent line without having to run the pipe to the outside of the building. Basically a oneway check valve allowing air in and stopping the gases from escaping. It's common around here but check your local codes.

A few shots of my builds. 69 Bug and a 73 SqrBk 3rd Brake light is out of an Ford ****** with a little rework done to it. Shame it didn't do it's job, we were rear ended sitting at a light about 2 weeks after the build.

Keep an eye on the plastic clips/fasteners they tend to degraded over time and become very brittle. After approx 4 years I had a few of them snap at the bend and allow the shelf to pull from the wall, more so if there was any force on them from uneven walls. Nice idea!

I think he meant a "P" or "J" trap on the drip pipe on the side of your HVAC unit. [snip from a Google search] On many air conditioning systems, a negative pressure is created inside the air handler. Without a condensate trap, ac condensation can be prevented from draining through the air...

Is that blocking under the bottom shelf? When I saw you're design and read your write up my fear was a vertical sag of the entire unit with only the back giving support (gravity is a *****). Did you anchor the front top of the unit to the roof rafters, by chance? Like the look of it!

Changed from Porta-Cable (18v) to the Makita LXT (18v 3.0amp) version about a year ago and haven't looked back. I bought mine through that auction site as individual pieces and managed to save about 40% on what they wanted for the kit at HD. Lowes does not or did not carry it at the time...
