I had one (when I was working as a gen tech no less...) It was on par with my fluke VT02 visual thermometer. I ended up upgraded to a better fluke camera but if your just looking for dead cylinders, bad diodes and hot spots on stators it'll do a fine job I think.

I could easily make a controller using an arduino and relays. Add in 3 pots for adjustable timing. Total cost way under $50.
