For the check valve, I think it would be better to use the smaller original one and install it with a reducing socket onto the new tank.

Like zkling said, the older two stage air compressors are built like tanks. New models are built as 'disposables', especially the cheaper ones. For good ol -made in the usa- quality reciprocating air compressor, I'd always recommend Quincy compressors. Also check out the buying guides here...
