    A/C just died.

If you were in the business, then you should (maybe) know a bit about pricing. And I will agree that there might be a fine line between pricing the whole job correctly and making a profit (the two examples above) and outright greed with the "let 'em sweat" mentality. Then there are the "how...

    New to me workshop.

Might want to determine your climate zone, and then search for insulation guidelines based upon that. https://basc.pnnl.gov/images/iecc-climate-zone-map And yes to air infiltration.

    A/C just died.

Because they are priced at $500 less than new? Plus higher used car financing rates? Plus an odometer reading that's near or over the mileage limit for the OEM warranty? And the person that traded it in got 50% or less than new price? :dunno: got me.

    Old school residential HVAC tools

Digi-Cool were the first ones available in quantity, early 2000's. There were a couple of iterations, then the "AK" series were much cheaper. There was a really cool manifold under development, which never happened. It was all done by Jim Bergmann and his wife. The Digi Cool website is still...

It's been available for a while. At least 15 years.

    Old school residential HVAC tools

Maybe. I wasn't able to maintain a wireless connection with the phone two floors up (wood framing) and about 15 feet over laterally. Was using Fieldpiece and Testo probes. Fieldpiece makes (or used to make) a sort of signal repeater, and i believe it only works with their app. Quick search...

At least you got every penny out of it, and can take your time replacing it... 🙃

    Question about superheat.

This is a typical spec for walk in coolers, and while superheat is set at the TXV valve, it needs to be verified at the compressor, and that may change the settings at the TXV valve to satisfy compressor requirements. For residential equipment, go with the data tag on the unit.

Hvac and insulation guys I need some advice

From what I have read, there is very little actual temperature difference in an attic under an asphalt shingle roof of other colors besides black.

****** HVAC duct in an attic...

If the metal duct is insulated, it's no different, as far as the environment is concerned, when compared to insulated flex duct.

Yummy stuff right there. I don't see much ductboard in may area. What I have seen, lacked any duct sealant where the collars were attached for the flex duct. That's besides the wrong type of collar being used, and that they were too small.

Not limited in any way, shape or form to residential HVAC.

Well this may be overkill, but 20 tons of ac

If it's coming off the roof, odds are that it's junk because it's being replaced. Taking a good one off and replacing it is pretty rare. Obviously, demolition and remodels would be the main exceptions. And don't even think that a commercial building owner is going to fix one any better than a...

Hvac and insulation guys I need some advice

Those ducts were not sealed. I would assume that the electric rate went up. Metal ductwork does not "deteriorate" unless it is smashed or rusts- neither will happen naturally to the metal if it is installed properly. Nope. Would be quite difficult to come up with an actual number. If it is...

Hvac and insulation guys I need some advice

More than what 99.98% of the people on this board will pay. I can say that residential attic HVAC work, using mostly metal, will take 3-4x as long as an equivalent system in a basement. Then it has to be sealed and insulated. The brush on mastic has to dry. I've been told to do some pretty...

Hvac and insulation guys I need some advice

A blower door test will help show where the building envelope issues are. It isn't just doors and windows. If the ductwork is in the attic, then that is a huge problem. Duct sealing wasn't really required by code until the adoption of the 2012 International Energy Code, at least in my area...
