I just took a look at the comments on the HF 240v spot welder. Second one down states: Didn't seem to work right out of the box. Light welds, no penetration, poor quality spots. It basically needed to be disassembled, correctly adjusted and all contact surfaces sanded and tightened together...

Have you tried welding any other kind of wire other than the paper clip? I'd try on a couple of pieces of coat hanger. Knock the paint/varnish off of the spot to be welded and see if the welder will spot them together, if so it may be that there is something in the wire you are trying to weld...

My dad made this one from an old car spring 30+ years ago. I turned the cedar handle a few years back and put it in. Reground the edge to a V rather than the chisel edge he had on it as the chisel edge didn't follow the split. Still need to take the handle out and weld the eye up but it works...

Is it stalling when plugged directly into an outlet or is this happening when plugged into an extension cord? If the latter try directly into an outlet and see if it still stalls down. I've had several tools that would stall due to (too long or undersized) extension cords limiting the current...
