    Runaway Compressor

That is what I did when I got the compressor. I replaced the cheesy hard-to-reach petcock with an elbow, copper pipe, and ball valve. The leak actually was caused by a ruptured copper tube at the drain valve months after being replaced. Split that sucker right down the middle. That failed...

    Runaway Compressor

My air compressor water drain valve developed a leak which caused the air compressor to run almost continually. The leak was the perfect size for the motor to run and fill up the tank, shut off, and then a few seconds later start running again. So this meant my system was almost continually...

Minisplit with different sized head units

Appreciate the additional input. It should help me have more informed questions for my HVAC contractor. One the sizing, I've used several online calculators and the results are all over the map, like 1 - 3 tons for the 1200 sq foot woodshop. Seems a bit wide of a spread. But I'll figure it...

Minisplit with different sized head units

Appreciate the input and advice. Looks like I need to compare the total package price of one big unit vs. two smaller ones. Thanks.

Minisplit with different sized head units

I'm going to purchase a minisplit system soon but haven't found one that will work for me, yet, after numerous online searches (probably time for me to call a HVAC contractor). All the package deals I see have identical head units. I need two head units to service the following: 1) 1200 sq...

Exterior Plywood Long Term Test Results

Nice looking stack of ply. 29.5' sounds ambitious. Good luck and hope to see progress pictures.

Exterior Plywood Long Term Test Results

If you are encapsulating in glass and epoxy I fail to see the benefit of pressure treated wood. It's been my experience pressure treated plywood has fewer plies and warps terribly as it dries from being submerged in a chemical bath. I would not want to wrestle a warped bulkhead trying to make...

Insuring pole barn on vacant lot

State Farm added a rider to my homeowner policy to cover my shop which is about 8 miles away from my home. I think they call it an "off premises structure". It added $12 a month to my policy.

    Mineral Spirits or Acetone

There isn't a single solvent best for all jobs. I find some work better than others. VM&P Naphtha is excellent at removing oils and waxes off surfaces before painting. Mineral spirits is good with sticky labels. Acetone dissolves old hardened paint. Alcohol breaks down shellac. The list...

    Show us your handplanes

Appreciate the input and info. Not on the shelf is a toolbox full of plane parts and some partially assembled planes. I could probably go through it and complete three or four more planes. But before I do that there is the matter of several large woodworking machines that need their...

    Show us your handplanes

My woodworking, boatbuilding, and hunting partner recently passed away and I was given most of his woodworking machines and tools. This is about half his plane collection which is now mine. The other half, mostly Lie Nielsen, are staying with his father for the time being. These need a good...

    Wood storage in pole barn

I recently put up this rack. It's 16' long with 30" brackets and holds quite a bit. Easy to make if you have a table saw. Made from 2x6's, 3/4" ply, lag bolts, and glue. It can be moved as well. Everything is attached to the wall via lags. Eric

Input wanted - Power meter in the way of lean-to addition

Engineer said if I provide them a key they will issue it to the meter reader on the days my shop in on their route. He also mentioned me being able to photo the meter and send it in. I read you on the fire department as I thought they had to have access 100% of the time to a disconnect but the...

Input wanted - Power meter in the way of lean-to addition

Good news. Spoke to the Utilities Engineer who told me the meter can be inside as long as they have a way in. That means I can simply add a man-door to the lean-to with a lock and key and provide them a key.

Input wanted - Power meter in the way of lean-to addition

Appreciate the input. I have contacted my utility company and am waiting on a call back from the engineer. I visited the website and there was mention of a standard key they issue to allow access but I'm not sure if that applies in my case. Hopefully the engineer will be able to provide a...

Input wanted - Power meter in the way of lean-to addition

I would like to add a lean-to on the gable side of my poll building woodshop for storage of my tractor and associated equipment. Nothing fancy, just a gravel floor storage area. I'd prefer to close the lean-to off and use a garage door for access. The problem is the power meter is on that...

    Woodturning a tree trunk...incredible!

In addition to the sheer size of the log the bouncing bed and flexing tailstock would scare any intelligent woodturner. Reckless disregard for safety. I wonder if he also enjoys a game of Russian Roulette.
