Got it wired up. Used two 12v 120w marine bulbs with a dimmable transformer. It throws light out through a window all the way to the tree line about 150 yards outside. Still need to get the dimmer hooked up this week.

Thanks for all the replies and suggestions so far. I did stop in to a large local industrial electrical supply company today and they where absolutely zero help. I'm gonna try the 12V marine par56 lamps with a dimmable transformer. Ill update when it works or doesn't work.

Yes there are very few NSP or VNSP available in 120v. Either have to get them in 12V marine or 30V train bulbs. The whole idea is to keep this as close to authentic looking as possible while dimly lit. Not really worried about having blinding light in the basement.

After some research tonight I have come up with this as a possible combination. 12v 300w dimmable transformers. Can use with a triac dimmer. The more expensive one is potted. Not sure what that means but it seems the only difference is you can use it with a cheaper dimmer...

Well I just did some research on the loco bulbs and they are 30v 200w. I always thought they were 74v like the rest of the auxiliary system runs on a locomotive. So I'm guessing those 300W bulbs would get to hot for that lamp housing? Though I don't plan on ever leaving it on bright for more...

I did check that one out. I noticed many of those 12V marine lamps only have a 100 hour life. That would get pricey as I probably be changing them a few times a year at that rate. Unfortunately this is one of them.

Yes I did see the 120VAC bulbs. That is not far off but I do want the clear lens spot beam style to better replicate the look of the original bulbs. Would 120VAC bulbs put out more or less heat than the 12VDC? Probably the lower the wattage the better? Or would a standard dimmer with the 120VAC...
