Mechanics pit for my pole shed shop

No issues. Building is at a high point on my property. With proper drainage slope on all sides. And gutters. And on top of a ridge. So probably just about the highest point within a mile. Pit is in the middle of the building that has been there for 40 years. Ground is super dry and super hard...

Okay, my tolerance for dumb-ness has been exceeded. Garage Journal is apparently for a different type of person than me. I don't have any painted fake gas station signs in my shop or a big screen TV to watch the game. A real working garage is apparently a scary thing here.

Awesome. Next time follow the sign that says no customers allowed in the shop.

Sumboodie: I don't have insurance on the shop. I don't care. If something happens to it, I will build another one. I paid cash for it and everything in it. I'm not on a payment plan for a replacement shop by paying the insurance company $100 per month. OSHA isn't in play here. This is my home...

Each cover weighs ~250 lbs and there are 6 of them. I was concerned about bumping into the stack of covers and crushing somebody. So I made a rack to hold them. Laser cut 1/4" steel ribs, C5x9 channel, and 2x2x3/16" tube uprights. Rack seems good and now they can all be moved easily with a...

Ted called for fully welded. That is a lot of welding. There are six covers. Andy had to do a lot of jumping around to not turn these things into pretzels. He welded it with his Millermatic 251 and 0.035" wire. It was cold in my shed, so I noticed on day two that he had a weed burner and was...

So with pit done, I had a nice hole in the floor. Made chain railing to go around it. But need to make actual covers. My criteria was that the covers needed to be strong enough to have a 15,000 wheel load them without failing. Right now I have equipment that is in the 40k lb range. But figure I...

What Temperature is your Garage in the Winter?

I have radiant / in floor heat on my home shop. I leave it set at 58 to 60 degrees 24/7. It is slow to respond, so there is no point in trying to dial it up. If I go much warmer than 60 degrees, my feet get too hot when working. Working in my shop is a guaranteed way to warm up and get...

Line replacement and inspection is much easier when you don't have be directly below a line when you disconnect it. Reaching up and standing to the side is where nicer than laying on your back and being directly underneath. This is on a 11,000 lb 40ft boom lift.

Pulling a 15,000 lb base for a manlift onto the pit so I can disconnect some lines from the hydraulic rotary union.

Car and truck oil changes. I built a rolling oil drain pan.

Lawn tractor blade service is really easy. I put in two pit covers and then drive a lawn tractor over the top. Blade replace in less than 5 minutes. Versus half an hour easily to pull the deck, flip, replace blades, flip, and re-attach the deck.

Here my Genie GTH-1056 telehandler. I bought it cheap from an online auction where it was reported to be inoperative. It needed a new battery and it is basically in great shape. But there is a leak somewhere up front that will periodically dump a gallon of oil while it is sitting. And then not...

Where I am, there are essentially only land use permits and electrical permits. No electrical and no change in land use, so no permits or inspections. Insurance isn't a concern. The building isn't insured, and my general liability and related insurance would cover something like a stranger...

Here is my Genie GTH-1056. 30,000 lbs. I got it used and it came with a leak somewhere in the front end. I have a sneaking suspicion the leak is a bad repair right around the clean portion of the front drivetrain.

I'll dig through my phone and see what I have. My TB 180FR midi excavator is on the pit now. Pulling belly pan is trivial to do in the pit.

Minnesota law requires 60 CFM ventilation in the pit. I have 550 CFM. It is in a pole shed with multiple inch gaps in and around the sliding doors. On my farm where it is always windy. The only time there is a detectable odor in the pit is when there is a dead mouse or vole on the floor. And...

I didn't post it last year on this forum. I didn't have enough posts to be able to start a thread. So this is my first time posting it here. I had posted some parts of it on Welding Web and Practical Machinist. Thanks! I will post some photos of the other parts when I have a change.

epilogue: I did this project a year ago in 2020. Garage Journal was one of my sources for research and inspiration, so I wanted to share it on Garage Journal. But I have been an occasional lurker, and never posted. So I wasn't able to start a thread. Recently Chrome auto-suggested a URL into...

The concrete contractor did not finish the floor to the pit rim as it should have been. Very unhappy about that. Pit rim was dead level. But the concrete is 3/8" above the rim in some places and 1/8" below in other. Pretty pissed off about it. All it would have taken is to run the screed to the...
