Chinese tools, what to buy and not to buy

I bought one of these from Harbor Freight and it doesn't flex AT ALL with my Mopar small block on it. Of course, it's big and heavy, but too many of my friends have cheapies that practically droop until the damper is on the floor.

Tools That you Wouldn't BUY AKA. Tools that ****!!

For the most part, I know better than to buy crappy tools. But once in a while, I give in to my cheapa$$ side. I bought a benchtop hydraulic press from Northern tool, made by the kings of cheap ****, China. It was either that one, or a huge floor-standing press, which I have absolutely no room...

Small, but nice. Good thing you have a small car!

    Lets talk about wasp control.

I found myself without any good stuff to use while doing some garage repairs. I tried mixing some dish soap and water, but it didn't seem to work for me. I used a hammer for a while, but you don't want to miss. So I got some Permatex upholstery adhesive out of the cabinet and used that. They...

another reason not to buy cheap tool's

Looks like it's time to call Jackie Childs! :D I'm only partly joking. I agree with those who say it's a faulty design. If you have the cylinder in a 3000# position, the hoist had better hold 3000lbs, or something is wrong. In fact, it should hold about 4500lbs, given a reasonable safety...

    Stocking a Garage

I'm out around Oconomowoc. Colorado Springs was cool when we were there once... That was so many years ago, I don't want to think about it!

    Hydaulic shop presses

Good to hear. I'll pick one up when the time is right. There's a Northern Tool pretty close, so I don't have to pay freight. BTW, I have not seen one with an American ram. Maybe the air/oil ones are, but I can't justify the cost of those.

    Hydaulic shop presses

I've been looking at one of these for a while now. Not enough space in the garage right now though. It's $329 at Northern Tool. At least the frame is made in the USA. The ram is Chinese, but it's not hard to replace if it craps out. Am I crazy to avoid Chinese steel & welding? I had one of the...

    Stocking a Garage

Not to get nitpicky here, but 242 is the easy-to-remove blue stuff. The red Loctite is 271. I always thought Loctite primer was just lacquer thinner in a can, but it seems to make the stuff set up better. I use the primer on most stuff now. You can buy Loctite, and a HUGE veriety of fasteners...

    Torsion springs

The shaft is solid. It appears there is a center hub that's keyed to the shaft. It seems like there is a ratchet between the pulley and the center hub. Not sure what's going on there, but tomorrow afternoon I'll get up there and take a closer look.

    Torsion springs

Ok, now I'm embarrassed I didn't think of that! :headshake I assumed, since the problem occured when the spring was replaced, that the problem was with the mismatched springs. It looks like you have to screw around with the shaft, pulleys, etc. when changing springs. I tried to loosen the...

    Torsion springs

I have a two car garage with a wooden overhead door. It uses two torsion springs. They should match but don't. One springs lifts the door more than the other and it doesn't sit flat on the garage floor. I want to replace the springs with a matching pair. Ace Hardware has the springs and winding...

OK what are you guys getting (want) for Christmas ?

I would like some Stewart Warner gauges - sweeet. Miracle point, or other magnetic protractor. 20 ton hydraulic press - My cheesy Chinese benchtop press lasted about 2 days.

    Motion sensor in garage

My light switch is next to the service door on the back wall. There is no switch by the overhead door, and we don't use an opener. I put a motion sensor in that replaces the switch. I think it was from Ace Hardware. It has a manual override and a timer that goes up to about 30 minutes. It turns...

Learn to MIG weld building my workbench?

Millermatic 175? :rocker: I built a weld cart for my 1st project. Structural steel is very easy to weld. Sheetmetal is tricky. Watch the video they give you with the welder. Are you getting a conventional helmet or an auto-tint? I got conventional. If you go that route, shine a halogen...

    starting my tool collection

Very well so far. It's only a year-and-a-half old, but I have used it a LOT. No complaints. Get a big stack of cutoff wheels. 1/16 thick or less. They get eaten up fast. Grinding wheels last longer. Wear gloves. It has enough torque to spin around and bite ya. Sometimes when I buy a tool, I get...

look, another FNG w/ a pic

Hey, man! Good to see a guy with a garage as small and dirty as mine. Plenty going on in there though! Get a wiring book from your local hardware or home store. Running 220 is not that hard, you just need some guidelines. Thanks for going to the big sandbox and doing the dirty work for us...

Watch out for the GARAGE POLICE!!!!!

Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you should. While I'm opposed to restrictions on homeowners, you have to use a little common sense. The ordinances that we all hate are made in response to guys like this. ONE guy gets to build a garage like that. The next guy will find restrictions...
