9th Annual Garage Journal Secret Santa (Official Thread)

I suppose I spoke too soon today. It was here waiting as I got home from work! Unmistakably GJSS and some fine artwork too. No return address so we'll have to see come Sunday morning. Didn't put a tree up this year due to some light work on the house, so it's next to one of the horseshoe...

    Insulation question

I'm going through a similar situation, but inside the house, barely any insulation. I had thought about just blowing insulation in, but there's nothing to hold it there if we decide to redo the ceiling in any of the rooms. just something to keep in mind.

Outdoor Wood/Coal Boilers, Who has em?

Thanks for the replies, I'll check out Hearth.com as i get chance. Bondo: Due to a local ordinance passed a few years ago, i can't have a homemade furnace, even though i have the capabilities and equipment to make it happen. Sounds like you have a good system set up there, especially with the...

Outdoor Wood/Coal Boilers, Who has em?

Juggling my options right now about installing an outdoor wood/coal boiler. 2400Sq/f House and 1800 Sq/f detatched Shop (priorities right?). Currently heating both with Oil, Hydronic in the house, hot air in the shop. While oil is cheap right now, i'm concerned it will go back up to the 4.00/gal...

    Circuit Breakers as switches?

CJ7: I'm considering/planning on adding switches just for piece of mind, but i would only gain at most 18" from where the breaker panel is to where i'd install the switches. As i walk in the door the panel is currently within arm's reach. Also I've checked the breakers and it appears all are...

    Circuit Breakers as switches?

Thanks for the replies everyone, I should've mentioned that the lights are flourescent, all turned on by breakers, except the two that are on a breaker but also have pull cords. Those are the farthest from the man door. The breaker box is pretty much immediately adjacent to the man door. Also...

    Circuit Breakers as switches?

So in the new to me shop, there are 0, none, nadda, switches. two lights have pull cords, that's it. I'm guessing that's how it was built, way back in the 90's. I know that using the breakers as such will wear them out faster. I'm also aware that doing so with any sort of load on them doesn't...

8th Annual Garage Journal Secret Santa (Official Thread)

Perhaps next year we could bump the timing of the 2016 SS earlier to give extra time to shop and for transit. Seems to be quite a few running late this year.

    The forge is done..

LX: in general lump charcoal isn't as dense as coal, hence you need 5-10X charcaol compared to regular coal. While you can use anthracite in a forges, its more of a PITA. I was using anthracite until i got my hands on bituminous. Alot of heat, easier to control and doesn't need nearly as much...

    The forge is done..

Nice work TJ, can do alot with a simple rotor forge, thats where i started out. Name of the game is to heat and beat. The fancy forges do the same, just with a heftier price tag. Will you be using Anthracite or bituminous/blacksmithing coal?
