    attaching welding table top?

3 feet by 6 feet by 1 5/8 thick....... very usable size for me in my shop. I have a smaller 2 foot by 4 foot by 5/8 thick top that is precisely the same height. There are all sorts of combinations if I need more workspace. Sent from my iPad using The Garage Journal mobile app

    attaching welding table top?

Welded mine. 1 5/8 thickness top though. After running passes an inch long I could immediately place my hand on the opposite side.... too much mass and too great of a heat sink to effectively warp. I’d imagine 1 inch thick top would tolerate welding just as well. Sent from my iPad using...

Do you carry a pocket knife?

Always have at least one in every car....usually one in the center console and another in the tool kit. Often keep one in my attaché. Don’t carry one on my person as much except when in the backcountry. Even keep one in my KTM. In college I worked on a psych unit and a kid hung himself with...

    Fab / welding table rehab.

Yes.... got them by accident. Got a pair of nice casters for a project on eBay and the seller asked if I’d be interested in these.. paid $25/ea and have been really happy since. They are rated at 5,200 lbs each and have no play in them which I like because they are always supporting the weight...

    Fab / welding table rehab.

Couldn’t function without my casters..... they don’t have brakes but I’ve found if I lock every other one at 90 degrees it won’t budge. I move my table around all the time.

Question for heavy equipment / crane mechanics about grade 8 bolts

Thanks ssdave- learned something useful. I grew up on a mine and learned firsthand the difference in strength and quality between Cat fasteners and so called hardware store grade 8 fasteners....no comparison at all. Just as there is a right tool for the job there is the right fastener for the...

    Carbon fiber wrenches

My bad- can definitely see that non-sparking applications exist. Should've known better than to think they may not conduct as well :lol_hitti

    Carbon fiber wrenches

Weight could be a key feature. Anyone think of an advantage to a wrench that does not conduct electricity?

Grinder Big 12'' Pedestal on CL Tings a Monster

I'd jump on that in a heartbeat if it were closer just for the cool factor. What an awesome piece of vintage machinery .

Is it just me or does the membership here seem addicted to cheap chit?

I always look for the best value. Sometimes that means buying new but most times I can find great value in used tools and equipment. I have paid more for used tools than what you can get for 'new' but I got a better value in that I have a tool that will provide good service for a lifetime. I'm...

    Welding table pics ?

I thought about rounding off the corners but so far it hasn't been a problem at all- the table at 36 inches high is always in your visual field and working around it is easy. The vise in the background is a Wilton 600S.

Good observation! Just not that one :D- it is the amc 360 out of my daughters jeep. My wagoneer has a 401 though :3gears:.

    Battery Tender / Charger Thing

So far I have been pleased with my Optima digital 400 chargers. Work on AGM and flooded batteries both as charger and maintainer. Can bring a battery back from as low as 1 volt according to Optima- this helps bring back some red top Optimas if they drop below 8 volts. On the pricier side but...

    Welding table pics ?

Ebay! Bought a pair of new 12" casters from a guy back east on the bay and he asked if I had any interest in a used set of 12" casters for $25 each plus shipping to which I said yes. I jumped at the chance as I had this welding table in mind. He went through a lot of work to disassemble them...

    Welding table pics ?

Here is mine: 3'x6'. Top is 1-5/8" thick on 4x4x1/4 legs. Casters are 12x4" and rated at 5,000lbs each. Figure total weigh is 1,500lbs- just heavy enough to stay put when working on stuff but pretty easy to move around. If I really don't want it to move I can lock the casters at 90 degrees...

    Beat up 15" planer restoration

Look into Lock-N-Stitch to repair that crack. I think for a durable repair it either needs welding by someone who does cast iron welding or a metal stitching technique. Good luck with the restoration and post pics of your progress.

New vise issue (or am I too picky)?

Manufacturing defects not limited to newer Wilton vises. I have an older 600s with a miscast dynamic jaw- drove my OCD side nuts for a while. The vise otherwise functions flawlessly and I am happy with it. If you look at the pics the jaw insert sits higher on one side than the other...

    Tool auctions?

Seems like BJ42LX has been to a boatload of auctions, is an auctioneer, or is a freakishly perceptive student of human behavior. I have only been to one auction. It was an old timer who built/restored hotrods his whole life and it was his shop. Easily 100 individuals there. I got exactly...

I Angle Grinded my Head in Half

Years ago my brother had a coworker sever an arm due to using an angle grinder in tight quarters. Grinder bound up came back on him and off with the arm. Shop policy at the time when doing such grinding was to have a coworker ready at the go on the power cord-extension cord. At the first or...
