    Hitachi F1000a Planer Repair

Thanks for the offer, I'll see what I have already and if the owner would be interested in splitting the cost. To follow up on my repairs, I ended up pulling the motor and the drive line apart. One of the bearings was totally exploded, don't recall specifically which but it was one near a belt...

If you had $4,500 to spend, what would you do?

Miata Is Always The Answer Or I'd save it for whatever breaks next. If it's really free money, I guess lights, floor, storage are all decent ways to improve the space. Does it have 220 already run? Several 30 amp 110 circuits? I have one 10 amp circuit to my garage, and it's annoying, but I'd...

"52yr Tool Collection worth $60,000 for only $30,000"

I feel like this is part of the lie that's told to kids starting out in trades. Buy stuff on shop credit, payroll deduct, and it's only $20 a week, and it will be worth something if you get out, when you retire, etc. As if it's an investment. As if it equalizers the workers and the managers...

    Smallest electric DA sander?

Metabo makes some top quality tools. Not clear just looking at the site if this is in house or a sticker, but their grinders are some of the best.

Any comments on their rails? I have some ernst twist locks I like.

Is it possible to straighten a bent magnesium circular saw shoe?

That's the kind of thing I hang on to for way too long, telling my self it's worth something. I agree with the sell it idea. I have a saw that was my grandfathers. It was nice enough when new in the 70s ish, but not much power, needs a wrench for depth or angle, and I've never been sure the...

Shop HVAC in Texas, Warranty required?

What's the price on the install? Double being 500 ->1000, I'd probably pay to have it done. 1 -> 2k, if these are reasonable robust things, I'd be tempted to diy. If there's a third party repair company in the area, maybe they could tell you what they have experienced. The ones we had in...

Nope, no drifting either. 0/2 so far.

    AC disconnect under window?

Nope, there is not an AC disconnect under that window.

How to build a strong wood ring 27" x 1.25"

Depending on available tools, baltic/Russian birch (like 9 void free layers per half inch) would be my choice. Quarters or thirds roughed with a jigsaw, then glue up and stagger the joints layer to layer. Screw on a cross piece to center a router, or bandsaw if available/close enough. You could...

    Huge powder coat oven?

I've watched some big jobs at the heat treat shop near us. They keep some kilns set up for regular jobs, but they also have an insulated shipping container with the bottom cut out so they can drop it over the parts. They have a bed of limestone, then support the parts with firebrick and...

    Maglite C-cell Conversion

I like the Convoys mentioned above. I have 4, I think two S2+ and two c8, about $20 each. Pocketable, mounts for bike headlights are cheap, 18650 is easy to get, and when used on low or medium they last a while. I also have magnetic tails, red and white diffusers, and they live in conduit...

Why an ICON Gold Plated Ratchet?

It's only an extra $20. I have to imagine it's half gifts, another chunk of novelty/joke buy it for the guy who blows all his money on jewelry.

    Shadow Tool Staging System

The cogen plant I worked at in college had setups similar to this. Small enough the manager knew every bolt in the place. If there aren't any 7/16 fasteners in the place, you don't need that wrench, etc. So the kit is much smaller than the "all the tools all the time" approach needed for working...

Good quality files -What do you recomend

Not totally sure this completely answers. Are you only going for clean mild steel and below, only pushing, cleaning after use? Sure, it may be worth buying a nice file. Are you reshaping questionable and possibly hard or dirty stuff, or as this post started, using harder than the average bear...

Good quality files -What do you recomend

Are all files used on metal to be considered consumables? Paul Sellers talks about sharpening saws, and he mentions that a miter saw (say 14 inches long, 10tpi just off the top of my head) you'll only get 3-5 full sharpenings before the file is junk. I think he specifically mentioned cheap new...

    Floor model router tables

I guess you're a bit beyond my solution - whatever router is closest to hand clamped in the workmate. If I need a bigger table than the base of the router, I have a piece of ply with countersunk holes and a 2x2 fence that lives in the box. Most of what I've built has just needed round over. I...

    Best vice for around $100-200?

Also, on the older ones, do you have any metal repair skills? A restored bullet might be $500+, but with a cracked ear or chipped or abused jaws, could be next to nothing. If you can braze/weld/otherwise repair, you can get much more for your money.
