The uses and usefulness of different wrench types

You could describe them that way and be very precise doing so, but if you asked a dealer for some he'd look at you funny and then say, "Oh! You want a set of angle wrenches." Service wrenches are short, single open ended but feature a different offset than your angle wrenches. If your angles...

The uses and usefulness of different wrench types

Angle wrenches are some of my favorites. They are short, and angled so usefully... Not something you grab every day but they can save so much time. I'd like to add a set of service wrenches to the mix. Then I'd have double and single open end wrenches. No fitting would be safe.

how to use a thread file

I've always had much better luck with triangle files. Thread files never seem to do much of anything for me.

    Between 265 & 485 SQ/FT BlakeTheCarGuy’s Basement Shop

I don't think there's anything wrong with living at home so long as you are contributing, so I'll be interested in seeing how you set up. I'm working on planning on a shed shop now.

Using Atlas Lathe to Turn Rotors

I'm a junk mender for a company. Hourly pay to raise the dead, in many cases. Last year I rigged the vacuum actuated choke to a hand pump on a completely worn out Suzuki Carry so some of our guys could keep it going for just a little bit longer. It worked out okay until they decided to stop...

Using Atlas Lathe to Turn Rotors

I'm imagining a spectacular crash... Broken change gears.... Flying rotor.... It'd fit well with my department!

Using Atlas Lathe to Turn Rotors

I'm still waiting on drills and center drills for the Atlas. If I asked for carbide, they'd probably tell me to buy it myself if I needed it that badly....

Using Atlas Lathe to Turn Rotors

Yeah, it's probably not worth the effort. I'm not even sure if you could mount these rotors in a brake lathe. They have a weird shape and the "hub" appears to be integrated into the rotor with the bearing packed in behind. So whatever cut you make would have to sneak in behind the hub surface...

Using Atlas Lathe to Turn Rotors

That's my worry. I got caught up trying to get the parking brake working today and that'll probably eat up the rest of my allotted time until the struts come in. Unless the shop next door opens up in time I'll probably just ship it with new pads once it's safe to drive. I will have to cut some...

Using Atlas Lathe to Turn Rotors

It's an Atlas 12" lathe and the rotors are a badly worn pair from a JD Gator. What are my chances of success with HSS tooling? Before anyone says to replace the rotors, they're over $300 a piece.... This machine is badly busted. Struts and ball joints are already on the way so at least I know I...

We had a motorcycle mechanic at work who had some specialty stuff he used. Said it worked some of the time....

    Snap On ratchet handle preference?

I have quite a few soft grip ratchets. When they get especially grimy I set the handle in the ultrasonic cleaner with a bit of dish soap. They come out almost like new aside from gouges.

Do I need a push mower with a zero turn mower?

In your situation I would seriously consider a stander. Much more compact than a traditional zero turn, and you don't get swamp **** sitting on the thing. It's really much more comfortable and if you have trees you can get under lower branches than on a rider by squatting. Hustler makes a...

Difficulties to read oil level on new (clean) oil...

Even if it's shiny between the marks it can be difficult to see when you're on the money. At least for me. Until I heard RN's paper towel trick the spin was the best I had.

Difficulties to read oil level on new (clean) oil...

That's brilliant. We have a few difficult to see sticks at the shop... And my eyes aren't so good... I'll have to remember that one.

Difficulties to read oil level on new (clean) oil...

Try looking at the back of the stick. It can be difficult to see clean oil on hash marks but the smooth side will show a line at least. Then turn the stick to see where it is. This doesn't work if it's the GM style with a *********** on the end.

Beer recycling device is finally installed

That's going to smell wonderful. Please cover the exit of the pipe at least. A future owner might wonder what that exposed drain is and get a nasty surprise when they investigate.

Replacement slide stop for craftsman box

I need to find a replacement slide stop for an older craftsman ball bearing box. It might be called something else. I'm looking for the little plastic piece to keep a drawer slide from falling apart.

What’s the point of “impact” extensions in common drive sizes?

I've seen a few extensions cracked by an impact. The impact extensions seem to hit just a bit harder than thinner chrome. I suspect it's the extra mass, similar to the sockets with the big ring around them. I know IR made them but can't remember what they're called. If you consistently use...

    Astro Pneumatic Tool Company

I work out of my truck a lot. Our shop has a very poor selection of tools that often go missing. I've borrowed a Matco set from the shop next door in the past but am looking for something a little less expensive to keep on hand. I'm pretty sure that the Matco set is made by Lisle but I really...
