The jaws are steel and are cast in. You do not need to be gentle.

Agree. The dynamic jaw, nut and lead screw/handle are just like a Reed 205 I'm working on. Was there a connection between these companies?

Material strengths are measured in psi or kpsi. The higher the value, the better the material can withstand stress before breaking. Google "Ultimate Strength of Materials". Cast irons have tensile strengths in the range of ~ 20-120 kpsi.

Mine is sealed with metalized tape.

I also use mine dry because I'm paranoid about the hose bursting and taking the paint off the car. I refill the brake fluid reservoir after bleeding each corner. If you have a German car, spring for the nicer version with the metal cap for the brake reservoir. Cars without screw on caps...

drives: Thanks. Got the swivel base off with no effort. The bolt was only finger tight, and it came right off with a wide flat screwdriver. The main nut is tight, so I'm leaving it alone. Will start the degreasing and wire wheel cleanup this weekend and post more pictures.

BMWs had a nice tool kit fitted to the underside of the trunk. They still do, but its not close to what was provided back in the 70's. Older Ferraris and Mercedes had really nice tool rolls, now worth many thousands of dollars. All the air cooled Porsches had tool rolls with plated wrenches...
