    Q for the ethernet gurus

This was early 2000s. I did have a set of 600mW 5.8G with 28dBi gain dishes, but they were not that great to place in the apartments. I should also mention, that the coax from the mpoe to each unit was shady as... Comcast wanted $200 each unit to run exterior cable, which the super didn't...

    Q for the ethernet gurus

The ethernet lines from the business modem to the building punch down were tagged. Not that the pac-bell tech would respect it. Sharing 150Mb/s 3 ways at 100Mb/s each was a cheap and fair way we all agreed on not hogging it all at once. Also, wireless speeds at the time were 54Mb/s range for...

    Q for the ethernet gurus

Hi, without reading too much replies, I can tell you about my experience using old telco for ethernet in my old apartment complex. 3 tenants including myself went in 1/3's on a business internet connection in our building. Our apartment super let us put the cable modem in the building telco...

    Adaptor or special cord?

I did this a few weeks ago when power was out for the better part of 6 hours. I had a 2000W inverter with a 5-15R, so I made a 5-15P to a L14-30R to plug in to my 14-30P inlet. But, I did kill all of the 240V appliances, like the AC compressor, oven, and dryer. Not sure if those would cause...

There has got to be a better way.

    Silly idea. - 3000RPM 120/240VAC motor with V belt pulley - 120A "one wire" alternator - also V belt pulley - Deep Cycle Battery - mounting plate / v belt - ?

    SAE 12V Connectors

+1 on the anderson power pole connections... I found the "30A" connectors tend to be a more common size. But, you need to be sure the crimp is a good mechanical connection. I have crimped a "30A" connector on a 16awg zip cord and had the connector pull off. I had to double over the stripped...

    Arc fault breakers

Don't forget about the HAM radio operators... Those guys trip AFCI circuits without even trying.

Wire for 40AMP Level 2 Electric Vehicle Charger

To get 40A of charging, you need a 50A breaker and 50A rated wiring. For my 14-50 outlet, I used #6 copper wire on a 50A breaker. Mainly because my outlet was ~18" off of the main panel via some EMT conduit. The 40A continuous load is going to be 80% of the 50A breaker. 40A at 250VAC is a...

    Coax, splitters, & cable modems

My last data install required a 20db attenuation at the cable modem. Otherwise the data signal from the system was too hot. think of a plateaued sine wave form rather than a nice round sine. When it came to DATA + TV, I have always used a 2 way to attach the cable, then as little ways as...

Can I get a sanity check on detached shed wiring please?

Anyone else for a third opinion?

Can I get a sanity check on detached shed wiring please?

I could, you are correct. I'd like to have the option of installing a large compressor at some point so it's not taking space in the garage. Probably won't happen, as plumbing air lines would be a major PITA....

Can I get a sanity check on detached shed wiring please?

I am planning on installing some power in a detached shed very soon. This will be for lights, and a few outlets to run some tools, and maybe some landscape related things later. Point is, I have a 8'x15' shed on a slab (no ufer, sorry), and the shed is anchor bolted down. I have 3/4" EMT...

Smoke Detectors & Lighting Circuit Sharing

I just had 5 detectors installed at the new house. The hall lights and plugs are shared with the smokes / CO on 12/3. The hall lights are the giveaway for the smokes of the house. The electrician said he always puts the smokes on a circuit that would be noticed if it wasn't working. He does...

Am I The Only One Who HATES LED Lights!?!?!?

It may have been stated earlier in the thread, but it's the 1/2 wave rectification that gets me on LEDs. I see the 60Hz flicker of crappy LED strips and xmas lights. Very distracting when driving, and starts to hurt my eyes in a room with LED flicker. I have been very lucky in my new build...

Need Help with Cat Cable Matchup

If you don't mind 100Mbit links, you can hack one cat5/6 cable to provide two links. Yeah, the twist per inch will be off, but if you really NEED 2 lines, it's possible to "split" a cat5/6 cable. pin 1236 of the RJ45 are used for 10/100 Mbit connections, just be sure to keep the same color on...

Prewiring Network and Cable - Worth the Cost or DIY?

My friend in San Francisco got a nice set of the newer cisco AP I mentioned earlier. He is using the new DFS channels in the 5G spectrum that opened up recently. He is the ONLY person on that channel. it's great if you have new gear that all supports DFS channels. Back when I was managing a...

Prewiring Network and Cable - Worth the Cost or DIY?

If you can get your hands on them , some of the Wave2 Cisco APs will support roaming between APs w/o a dedicated controller. The newer APs have some local grouping functionality to act as a controller in small deployments. Personally, I sprung for a cheap cisco2504 WLC to support my Wave1 AC...

Prewiring Network and Cable - Worth the Cost or DIY?

If anything on the specific model mentions 802.3af or 802.3at, then yes, a standard switch is fine. I have 5 APs going in to my new place, all of which are PoE+ (802.3at) not to mention a few Cisco IP phones as well (also take 802.3at)
