    Drill Bit vs Steel

Hey guys, I apologize for dropping out of site for a bit - things got really busy. There is a lot of really good info in this thread. My situation was that I wanted to adapt a fixture from one machine tool to another, right now, and I knew you guys were the ones who would have the experience &...

    Drill Bit vs Steel

I'm going to experiment on some scrap, just to satisfy my curiosity That's what I suspected, but wasn't sure. I think I'll defer to a machine shop.

    Drill Bit vs Steel

A file? Yipes! No, I was comparing the hardness to see how close it was to that of a (to me) known entity: a file.

    Drill Bit vs Steel

A mill if necessary, though that means I carry it with me to Illinois next week from Alabama, and ship it back. Was hoping for an immediate fix with a drill press so I can see and implement the results. The steel is D2.

    Drill Bit vs Steel

I need to enlarge a 5/8" hole to 3/4" through 1/4" steel. I measured the hardness at 58 (Rockwell "C"). A Nicholson file, for comparison, tested 66C. Do i stand a chance, or will I just ruin a new carbide bit?

    How the times have changed

I bought a used '68 Karmann Ghia convertible. First night I drove it the brights were on. I stomped all over the floor looking for the stupid dimmer switch. Got home and ripped out the floor mat trying to find it. Finally called the prior owner and he informed me the dimmer was on the turn...

    Craig's List puzzler

I'm thinking this belongs in the category containing SawSaws, Radio Arm saws and such, but whattheheck is a Rachel in Screwdriver? Is that how we Kentuckians s'posed to say "ratchet"? Or is Rachel legitimate and I'm just ignorant of all things Yankee Screwdriver? :headscrat...

    Metric Square Drive?

The machinery I am responsible for is primarily German. This particular unit is of late 50's design, early 80's manufacture. I've been into a half-dozen of these and they're put together like an old Rolls-Royce - every machine is just a little bit different. Lots of hex socket caps and...

Found a line that my Wright line wrench wouldn't budge

He may be referring to a method I've used to get frozen exhaust manifold studs out of an engine block. When heat alone isn't enough, heat the stud and touch a small birthday-cake sized candle to the threads. Capillary action ***** the paraffin into the joint and it turns out like it was new...

    Cornwell tools?

I saw a Cornwell truck parked in a Fastenal lot in Louisville once last autumn. I saw a Lamborghini Aventador not five miles from there just last week. But, hey, I've spotted the Oscar Meyer Weiner mobile four times since moving to KY 27 years ago.

    Fine Tooth Ratchet history

Who first came up with the concept of finer teeth for product differentiation and when did that happen? Were any of the "good" tool companies noted for being especially slow in adding fine tooth ratchets to their product line?

    The Frugal Tool Shopper Thread

You twisted the head off a grade 5 bolt? Now, that's the kind of objective information i like! A couple of weeks ago I was on the way to the Pull-a-Part to (hopefully) find a rear bumper for a Suburban. Feeling a bit insecure about the tool kit i was carrying, I stopped into a tool dealer and...

    Wera Screwdrivers, or what's better...

@iandh: Thanks for the information. Having spent too much time in the 70's (when flashy marketing terms began to replace quality), warning bells sound when I see something like "lazertip". Before that decade they would have called it something like, I dunno, maybe "screw-0-matic". The...
