World's oldest tools found outside Africa

You know, those tools are clearly outdated and broken. Tell ya what, out of the goodness of my heart *I'll honor the warranty* and replace them with brand spanking new Craftsman from Lowes. No no...no need to thank me. Glad I can help! :D Pretty amazing article, btw.

    tariffs on tools and jacks

People seem really set on the idea that these tariffs will, "stick it to Chinese manufacturing!" Its the emotional payoff, right? We're getting back at China for filling our big box stores with their "junk" products. "Oh boy! BRING ON ALL THE TARIFFS! The more the better!" And maybe, there'll...

    tariffs on tools and jacks

I'm all for encouraging more domestic manufacturing. However, tym makes a point I think a lot of folks don't fully appreciate. The impact of these tariffs won't mean much to the Chinese. The real pain will be felt right here at home by US consumers. It's not about sticking it to Beijing. It's...

    tariffs on tools and jacks

I suspect there might have been a quiet promise to supply H1B visas as needed. Loopholes, loopholes, and more loopholes. It's not enough to recognize bad laws on the books, it's even more important for Congress to go back and fix 'em.

    tariffs on tools and jacks

If you know what you need and have an idea as to the lift model you want, I'd be tempted to buy now, too. I don't know about you, but time never seems to be on my side. And with prices likely going up, even more so than usual.

    tariffs on tools and jacks

True enough. The tools I buy are durable; with proper maintenance and care they should serve me for a long time. But tools certainly aren’t all I buy. And, yes, I buy a LOT of fuel over the course of a year. Still, I’m glad for any modest savings I’ll get from purchasing when I did. Good luck...

    tariffs on tools and jacks

I mostly buy built and made in USA: Stihl, Proto, etc. I’m glad I completed most of my major tool purchases for the year before this trade and tariff stuff started, though. I can’t predict who the winners will be in all this, but consumers will be paying more for everything, imported or not, by...

The craftsman name still carries a lot of weight

I think the reason I liked dnschmidt‘s post and perspective so much is because I’ve been fortunate in my career experience, too. To love what you do so much that you’d do it for free is a truly beautiful thing. Also, I suspect by anyone else’s standard, he does challenging work that takes...

Made in USA vs Made in Germany

Can you recommend an online retailer who's currently selling these rails? Sounds like exactly what I've been looking for! Thanks!

Made in USA vs Made in Germany

Speaking of (de)rails, has anyone tried the Gedore socket rails? I doubt they're actually made in Europe but they sound like they ought to do the job. My current Craftsman socket rails have funky handles and don't fit in my toolbox like I need them too.

Made in USA vs Made in Germany

Amazon's been my "go to" vendor, but I've been looking for alternative online sellers for my German tool purchases. I liked the KC Tools web site and extensive selection, but my order from them took *forever* to arrive. We're talking weeks and weeks for items that were supposedly in stock. Any...

Made in USA vs Made in Germany

My wife has pretty much appropriated my Wera "strike through" screwdrivers (yellow and black handles) for her projects. She's the wicked smart engineer in the family. Easily one of the best general use screwdriver designs either of us have ever used. Before this, made in Germany (okay, designed...

I don't know how much farther we can take this off topic discussion...but I really appreciate everyone's thoughts and comments.

The craftsman name still carries a lot of weight

This was absolutely true for me, too. I loved college and was glad I got my degree, but technology was changing so fast, all my paper did was complete a checkbox on a job application. Employers cared way more about what you actually knew and that you could research new problems and find...

The craftsman name still carries a lot of weight

Ha! True enough! A lot of Investors have benefited materially from America’s taste for “eating it’s own seed corn.” That’s pretty much why nothing’s likely to change. Plan accordingly.

The craftsman name still carries a lot of weight

At the risk of taking this discussion further off topic, I'll just say that compared to the foreign college students attending US universities that I've met over the years, we Americans have done a wretched job of not adequately preparing and guiding our own children for post high school...
