    Advice from those witha 30x30

My neighbor did a 30'x30' and installed a single 18' door. When I got ready to install my 30x35, he recommended that I install two doors because he hates trying to squeeze one vehicle past the other. And if he's working on something in the doorway, you can't get past the project. I love my...

Last two weekends were dedicated to the floors. Weekend before last, I tackled the acid etching. Didn't go nearly as easy as I thought it would. First, I didn't dilute the 31% muriatic acid, so it was very strong when applied. Looking back, probably should have diluted it some. The fumes...

    Lets see your workbench

I really like this setup. Did something similar on mine with a tablesaw mounted in one corner. Lumber Liquidator's always has broken box specials that are super cheap and the hardwood top is really nice. You said retractable casters.....What are you using? Mind sharing?

What material to use for walls

I did OSB, caulked the joints, primed, and then painted. Going to run wanescote with metal sheeting around the bottom. You can see the joints, but I like it. And I can nail/screw to it anywhere without concerns. If it get's dinged up, I don't really care and can either paint over it again or...

workbench for heavy mill and lathe

Really, you're not talking about that much weight. The bottom bench will be fine and if you build it in place, just make sure the horizontal members are level so you don't need adjusting feet. I would spend a little more time on bracing under the plywood on top so you minimize any deflection...

Well, I needed some color and decided to stick with my theme of my favorite mascots. I've always been a Raider's fan, so that is where the silver/grey came from. Going to have black trim pieces to complete the combo. But I went to Oregon State and they had the same colors as my high school...

Well, had a really productive weekend. Installed the TV and used a Powerline Ethernet Adapter to bring internet into the shop...worked perfectly. Installed a new fan after the last one had a clicking sound. Finished installation of the mini-split with the help of my daughter. And finished...

Pegboard...is it really the way to go?

I've used pegboard in the past and could never get it to look the way I wanted. On my current bench, I just placed a sheet of 1/2" plywood and then used it as a blank canvas to lay out the tools how I wanted them, not concerned about where holes were located. Then I simply installed different...

Well, frustrating day. One of those two steps forward, on step backwards. Had the electrician over to install the lights and that part went fine. Not sure what I expected, but feels dim during the day, but looks great at night. Ceiling fans, a much different story. First one went up with no...

Been awhile since I updated. Finished all the wiring and then with some help of a few guys from work, we covered all the walls in OSB. I tried doing it myself, but quickly discovered that I'm not as young as I used to be and this was going to take me months if I didn't get any help. LOL...

Finally building my dream garage, but I have some questions

Take the time to sketch out how you believe you're going to lay everything out ultimately. That way you will know where you want things such as windows, AC units, etc. I also used the sketch to layout my power needs, running 110v, 20 amp circuits to different zones and various 230v circuits...

    Door Size

Depends on your usage. If your going to get a lift, you will want two seperate doors so that you can center the lift on one and use the other for access when something is on the lift. 10 ft wide doors would be the minimum I would consider for full size vehicles. But if your not going to be...

    Horse Barn into Workshop

Alot of time, effort, and expense will get ******* in this shop. I would definitely start with a good foundation. Would be very concerned if the posts are just set in dirt. Better to start over.

    Wrong paint color - WWYD?

Don't be afraid to demand what you paid for. I would never accept expecting Red and getting pink with a discount. They know the risk and should have checked the paint sample, first against the number, then after the first few sprays. That's just good business.

Interior metal on walls- Floor transition?

You may look into paneling as another option. I saw some really nice looking paneling that looked like barnwood and/or brick at Lowes. Made me rethink how I was going to finish one of the walls in the garage.

    Barn wall finishing help!

You may check with your building manufacturer and see if there would be an issue with screwing 2x4's horizontally to the vertical members. That way you could install on 2 ft centers then apply what every type of sheeting you want to cover up the walls. Always a debate between OSB and...

Ok, made some progress. Need some pictures, but completed all of the inside framing on the walls, constructed a storage room along with a loft area for storage. Room and loft are 9'x10'. Storage room will also double as compressor room in the future. Yesterday I started on the wiring...

Pros/con living in a metal shop.

You can get really creative with the steel structures. There is one that is close to me that has a large steeped roof with a loft in that area for a play room and the bottom floor has lots of windows looking out over a pretty ravine. Then they had river stone put around the bottom 3 ft all the...

Finishing walls and ceiling in the garage

I'm going with painted OSB with 3 ft of tin around the base. Like that look. If you want to go over the drywall, you could consider paneling. I saw some interesting paneling at Lowes that either looked like brick or barnwood. That it might be interesting to do on one wall of my shop to give...
