    8-Point Sockets

I've only run into one metric example - the grease fill plug on my '90s Toyota Hilux Birfield joint is 12mm, I picked a socket up from Ko-ken because it was fiddly to fit in there with a wrench.

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

DT Swiss quality has unfortunately declined in recent years as they have spread their manufacturing more broadly across the globe. For a long time they were consistently reliable, but we've experienced more problems the last couple years. The smaller tooth count star ratchets are more rugged...

I have the Abbey at home and we use the new generation Park Tool (DAG-3) at the shop. The Abbey is extremely well made and works great, but honestly I find the Park gauge easier and less fiddly to use. For the price I wouldn't think the Shimano is worth it, the Park is IMHO a great bang for...

    Spreading the Bonney affliction!

I cross posted this in the vintage toolbox and Utica threads, but thought it would help to land here too - a nice Utica/Bonney roller in decent shape. Anyone know who actually made these and about this era?

    Show Your Vintage Utica Tools!

Just picked up this decent Utica/Bonney roller and cross posted in the vintage toolbox thread. The boxes don’t show up in any catalogs I could find, anyone know much about this era and who made these?

The VINTAGE toolboxes of Garage Journal!

Just picked up this decent condition Utica/Bonney roller to join into a miter station I’m building. I searched here and elsewhere on these boxes but couldn’t come up with any catalog info - anybody know much about who made these and when?

Battery powered lights. What are you using?

Streamlight Strion Switchblade: love the natural light setting and that I can keep a spare battery on the charger; really versatile, especially around the engine compartment Bosch FL12 12v Worklight: basically a mini floodlight, super bright, excellent under the truck and shares batteries with...

Ball End Hex Socket Set help.

Check out Eight Tools in Japan, they advertise their "taper head" bits with strength to fastening torque. I've been using their hex keys and they're on par with if not better than PB Swiss for fit and durability, at around half the price. The bit sockets look just as nice and are available...

Show me (And discuss) your toolbox organizers...

And here's my homemade extension rack for the cart lid, we had a bunch of leftover hardwood flooring pieces that make great tool holders. Made for a great magnetic bit organizer too - thank goodness for friends with CNC routers!

What I really like about the Alien racks is how flexible they are rather than having fixed spacing. With large and mid-size wrenches I can space them just right so they angle back to read the sizes, and I can stack the little ones close to each other so they're more compact and stable.

Show me (And discuss) your toolbox organizers...

Late to the party here but hopefully still helpful! I've had a lot of success with the Westling trays and the Alien Space Savers wrench organizers after trying less durable options. The trick for me was to really customize them, I cut down the Westlings to better fit my sockets as a non-pro...

    X/32 " (i.e. 19/32 ", 21/32 ") socket set recommendations

Surprisingly it's true - current production: https://www.wrighttool.com/products/sockets-ratchets-attachments/hand-sockets/1-2-drive-hand-sockets/1-2-drive-12-pt-standard-hand-sockets-sae-metric Proto too, but their website is weird to navigate. We appreciate all your wisdom and experience...

Tekton technical article, "JIS vs Phillips: Understanding Tip Geometry, Myths, and Fastener Compatibility" Nov 2025

I wonder if you've tried the Vessel Wood Compo version? I don't mind the megadoras but don't love them either, however the wood non-slip have become my favorite in the shop. They have a much better feel and heft plus the perfect Vessel fit.

    X/32 " SAE (i.e 11/32 ") socket set recommendations?

They should be common up to 11/32 in most 1/4" drive sets. SK still makes a 19/32 and 21/32 in 1/2" drive, and Wright and Proto have 19/32, 21/32, 25/32, 29/32, and 31/32. For 3/8" stuff Ko-ken offers 11/32 and 13/32 (and smaller), and Proto have 11/32, 17/32, and 25/32. I think 15/32 was...

    Spanner Wrench

You might try a Park Tool pin spanner from the bike world, it has 3mm pins but probably tough enough for the job. https://www.parktool.com/en-us/product/pin-spanner-green-spa-1#tabbed-section

Pedros tire lever or a box end wrench - try to only use plastic on Shimanos, the ceramic pistons aren't difficult to crack. The PP-1.2 works best when the pads are still in and you're just resetting the rotor gap.

    The Bicycle (Specialty) Tools Thread

I tried the Tekton and the socket attachment is too close to the wrench end to work on a brake line, the ratchet head gets in the way. You have to use an extension to get on a nut, which seemed silly when there are better options.

Battery impact wrench for a guy who hates power tools?

The difference in size between the M12 and compact Makita DTW300 is pretty negligible, other than that the M12 battery fits in the handle of the Milwaukee so the bottom is out of the way. The tradeoff not mentioned often is that the M12 handle then becomes quite bulbous, which may or may not...
