    The VISES of Garage Journal

Updating from a couple years back. Finally found someone with the right screw for dad's old vise. Nice fella in Rhode Island shipped it to me. When dad got the used vise, the lead screw had been "repaired" as seen in the before pic. The thing has a big, sloppy weld securing the replacement...

Squash ..... I think the saddle swap will be a good choice. Couldn't put my finger on it, but the specialized saddle just didn't suit the build. Also, never seen a plastic BBracket before! What were they thinking:eyecrazy: Jack ..... Some impressive custom work there. Would like to see...

Squash..... the DB 29'er could be an interesting project. Wondering as I look at it, what is the intended purpose of the bike? Bar and stem say cruiser to me, but that would render your tire swap pointless. Just curious what you had in mind.... or if you're still figuring it out.

Macgee, I like the classic lines and clean builds in your corral. Only ever owned one roadie, but can appreciate any nice build. Love the lugs on the Olmo. One thing I wonder as I look at those drivetrains....... are there no hills?

That sounds hideous and cool! I've spent many hours drooling over Valkyries...... don't even care how bad they ride, they are literal art. The worst thing I rode was probably the bike I pieced together in '92. A steel GT with an early (in the US) Marzocchi fork, a single 34 tooth chainring...

Had a thing for the e-stays for sure. I've a first year Alien, Scott Ultimate, later aluminum Haro Extreme, and elsewhere is an Alpinestars Al-Mega. I just watched one of his videos a couple weeks ago.... really cool. I totally get that about modern bikes, so I just avoid riding them

Pre-Trek with the two piece seat stays. There are two up there, at least one is the race lite, maybe both, can't even remember, sadly.

GForce .... for some reason, I still can't see your pics. Never seen a dropfo before, but did live in Canal Fulton for a number of years. It was originally Fulton on one side of the canal and Milan on the other before becoming incorporated in the mid 1800's. These look cool and make me want...

Just to give an idea of the mess I've collected over the years ..... a picture from the loft. There are 14 frames in this pic, waiting for me to pull for a project. I would guess there are roughly that many more scattered about. I have boxes of components, sorted by group, some NOS, most in...

Squash..... I'm curious to see how a spring swap turns out. Don't think I've ever seen that before. Wondering if you have the issue both front and back? If you install them on the posts without the springs, or without the spring-ends in the "pinholes" they should move completely free no...

Most of it is stored away on the garage loft. I did grab the most convenient bike and take a quick (terrible) picture. This is not typical of my bikes, as it was built with and for my then 14 year old daughter. Stripped a GT Pantera frame and set of rockshox and gave them 5 coats of color...

Exactly ... the innovation was crazy. Builders were doing off the wall stuff, and most of it didn't really work, but it was cool. I feel like the industry has agreed to a basic design that no one really has strayed from in YEARS.

That's a good looking Fuji. I love the vintage bikes. I used to have a problem, I suppose, with bikes and have a huge pile of 90's bikes and parts. Was a poor kid and could never afford the nice stuff, so when I got a good job, I started collecting and building bikes that would have been cool...

I know, I know .... not vintage, and not nearly as **** as some of these vintage tools. But, I do love these drivers. I did sneak some vintage **** into the picture though:thumbup:

I Think I Might Have a Slight Knipex Problem....

Only problem I see in this thread is that most of the tools look like they've never been used!?! Won't even post a picture of mine, someone might accuse me of abuse;) Seriously though ... love my k-nipex, but I use the **** out of them and it shows.

    Flexible bit holder extension

Mine is cheap HF or somesuch, but has been extremely handy. I've used it with an impact to drive lags into masonry and never had an issue, so any "branded" tool would probably be pretty safe.

The Unofficial Vise Parts Swap Thread.

Looking for a lead screw for a Prentiss 940. Wanting to restore Dad's old vise. Has a working part now, but when I tore down found this weld, which explains the mismatched handle. No idea what damage was done to it, but the weld has held up impressively. The screw is a 1 inch diameter, in...

BIngo! It was confusing me when I was trying to ID it (part of the 940 is chipped or badly cast). But, when I got the lead screw out, I found a ugly, but impressively durable weld where the "meatball" was replaced with this barrel shaped end. Would like to remedy this, but finding a...
